2015 destash - Purge Purge Purge, Purge is the word

I
Papers:
Each of my kids has a tote with their color files, one for each school year and personal papers. As soon as papers come into the house from their back packs, that goes into a box next to the mail bin. As I sort the papers some goes right to recycling and some go into the box. The box gets filed every Friday into their totes.

Thanks for starting this for the new year! It's nice to have a fresh thread to start looking forward. :goodvibes

I love your idea for organizing kid papers! I have a folder in a drawer where I throw things related to them but I really need to get their papers better organized.

Last night I cleared off the side table by the couch and went through my magazine basket. I got rid of a big pile of papers and magazines. I only keep one basket full of magazines. When it gets overflowing, it's time to recycle.

I placed an ad on CL for the boxes and several responded who can pick them up Sunday. That will make a big dent in my garage clear out.

I'll snap a pic in the morning to show you the totes.

Ugh, I've been working on this already this morning. I live in a big old farmhouse with four generations of stuff! This morning I am in my craft room packing up boxes of old novels and magazines to drop off at Goodwill and the Abitibi bin at the school. I desperately need to get rid of some of my scrapbooking supplies too, because I have no time to scrapbook and need to simplify things.

I am in this year!! I am starting with the holiday storage boxes. I need to purge the Christmas stuff I did not even take out this year and also the same with the fall decor boxes. I have just way too much stuff that I don't even use. :)

This is where I'm starting when we take the tree down this week.

Here are my totes for the kids. Got the bins at staples and a box of multicolored file folders. Each folder has papers from each school year and other personal papers go in the back. This has helped me keep the clutter down and keeps them organized for when I scrapbook their school albums. For each album I have a 2 page spread with photos, report card, handwriting samples, and a special report or anything else they want. Left overs either get tossed or they stay in the tote. I also keep certain papers like DS13's IEP papers in that grade year.

I know, I keep thinking I should do this too. I plan to start packing up early next week and will try to get rid of some things I just don't need anymore. It will either go in a box for DD or Goodwill.

The past 2 nights, I have gone through the pictures on my computer. I deleted the fuzzy or extras since we don't need 3 of the same shot. I am going to try to do that immediately or from the camera from now on. Now I need to put them on the external hard drive. I would also like to print a few to make a collage frame for the basement.

We have built in cabinets in the family room stocked with papers, CDs, games, and books. I found 5 books to donate and 5 board games no one likes. AND I found $20 in a sealed envelope being used as a bookmark that I almost tossed without opening! Bonus. :yay:

Purging is turning into a real money maker for me.

One of the things I am trying to do is as I find things that I don't need getting them out of the house as I find them. I opened the kitchen drawer yesterday and found a brand new micro SD card that had never been opened. It was nothing we needed so I put it on FB. Sold it this morning for $5. :thumbsup2

Also, I bought a new coat with money I got from Christmas. As soon as I got home I went to the closet and got out the old coat to put in a bag to go to St. Vincent's. Cleaned out the pockets and found $10 :cool1:

I have been working on this for a while. In November I got rid of 7 large boxes worth of stuff. Today I have 2 more to take to Goodwill.

I have so much still to go through, but it is a start.

My goal was one large box per week, but it is turning in to one large box per month unless I get a spurt of motivation.

Back to lurk again. ;) Every year I have good intentions, and then I go back to work. :rotfl:
Has anyone ever followed the plan of 52 weeks to an organized home? There is an associated Declutter 365 FB group, too. I know I used to do better when I had the emails from flylady, so thought that notifications with this might help. I, personally, think that a 15 minute a day commitment is something that might be attainable. Thoughts?

Thanks! So is it one bin per kid and inside each bin is one file folder for each year?

I'm in. I'm already a purger, but I'm about to do a major purge. I'm reading this and it is GOOD:

LoveBWVVBR, I just finished this book too! I am working on my categories, doing clothes now, then books, then Holiday décor. I probably won't follow her plan to the letter but I've already made a lot of progress. DH is finally on board because we know we want to move soon and can't take all of this crap with us:headache:!

The number one key in organizing and purging is stay out of stores and don't buy new stuff.

try just 15 mins a day min.
15 mins a day adds up to a lot of time.
5475 mins or approx 92 hr in a year.

or

10 items a day to get rid of, that's 3650 items in a year.

cleaning shouldn't get in the way of purging they should be separate.

Thanks for the photos! I looked at bins this morning but they didn't have the right kind. I'm going to completely follow your idea!! I should be able to get totes early this week and those are perfect! I have years of school photos and certificates that need a permanent, organized home. Plus I would like to make a book for each kid too.

Thanks so much! I have not seen this one but just pinned it to my 2015 board! I agree, 15 minutes a day should be do-able.

I'm in...checking out the links and hoping to make serious progress prior to returning to work on January 5!

Yep. One bin per kid and the bin has runners for file folders so they hang. One folder for each year plus one in front with baby stuff and one in the back for check stubs (ds18 got his first real paying job this year).
I still have their passports and birth certificates in my household bin but when they move out, those will go to them.
Which reminds me I need to get a safety deposit box this month for that stuff.

Just keep reminding him that you pay by the pound when you move!

I need to be in on this from Jan to June. I have been in the same classroom since 2001 and I am retiring at the end of June.

I also have to get some other things cleaned out here at the house. We have been doing some things since both boys have moved out but there is still a lot that I have to do.
