2015 destash - Purge Purge Purge, Purge is the word

Funny you say that about the window plastic. I did 3 of our worst windows last night DH had mentioned in about early December that this should be done (as I do most years). I told him where the kits were (that I bought on clearance a few years ago) and left him to do it.... but of course, he did nothing. I was sick of sitting in a drafty room and watching our hard-earned money go out the window.... so I got a start on it last night. Better late than never. And in the office I also put up a window quilt (I made them a few years ago). It is a back window that isn't really seen by anyone unless you are in the office. I figure we can live without the sunshine in there for now.

I may do another 2 or 3 tonight but it is a time consuming task and I need to dash out for robotics by 5:15................P

It is time consuming but so worth it. We have crappy windows in the house, the guy that inherited and renovated the house used the cheapest windows he could get.

Destashed the chocolate shelf in the cabinet today. Yes, we have a shelf just for chocolate goodness. But it was exploding after all the stocking goodies from christmas. Tossed some of the older stuff, and stuff is not falling out anymore.

We also got down to the bottom of 2 rows of firewood in the wood shed so I moved the left overs to the other side. Now the right side of the shed is ready for the split stacks outside that are drying. I will wait until it get a bit warmer to move those though.

Forgot to say we gave my dad some Model T books since her restores them, well he sold them at a Model T meeting (didn't know he sold them) and we made $40!!

We have crappy windows as well.... but have no one to blame but ourselves. We didn't upgrade the windows when we built the house and of course, haven't set any $$ aside since then to replace them. SO for now, it is plastic, plastic, plastic.

A chocolate shelf??? Sounds delicious!!:rotfl:

Great exercise, moving all that wood!

Did you put it in your Disney budget??

Heading off to the Goodwill with a trunk full later today!! Plus I have a lead on an indoor flea market I could participate in in February. I'm setting aside some of the better stuff to save for that. But if I don't end up participating, I VOW to donate the stuff by March 1 !!!!!! ........................P

We will finally take down our outdoor decorations this weekend. And happily we arent the only ones around here so I dont feel bad.

We will throw away our 2 inflatables that bit the dust and I think some of the lights are not working either. So whatever is broken is going and gone.

I wish I had put the money in the Disney fund, Pamela.
DH put it in his pocket but that means I don't have to get as much cash out for haircuts this weekend.

Part of my problem is DH does most of the adult laundry in the house and I do most of the kid laundry. When DH folds he sets my clothes on my dresser and I almost never put them away anytime soon. I will start a load of kid laundry before I leave for work. When DH gets home he puts it in the dryer. When I get home there's always something else to do. Hey, it's clean! It is such a relief when it's all folded and put away but some weeks are better than others when it comes to that.

I'm sure I read your system on the boards before. It works well for me when I am not working full time. Still figuring that pesky work issue into the picture. :) ::scratchin::

Darn work always getting in the way! :rotfl2:

If you are on Facebook, sign up for a Buy, Sell and Trade board in your area. People want the Play Station 2 systems. People love the games anf they have burnt out their systoms. I sold my sons for $50. I had people fighting over it, and I had to take it down off the boards and I dealt with one person and we agreed on the price.

We sold our house. I am cleaning out closets and my son left a lot of clothes. I sold his 34x34 blue jeans, 7 pair for 10 dollars. I probably could have gotten more, but I just wanted them gone. I usually just give clothes to Good Will.

We have to be out of the house by Feb. 23. I am so glad I found this thread over a year ago. I have so much decluttering done. Only problem is, it is all totes in a storage shed. When we move, I have to look at everything again, and really get rid of it. I bet I have 10 storage bins of Christmas items. The Villages are going, I never liked them, but just kept buying them.

I don't have facebook but if I did I would definitely join one of those groups. I've sold a few things through CL but never high priced stuff and the whole idea of meeting strangers creeps me out. Good to know about the ps2. Maybe I'll try to see if I can get any bites on CL for that.

We finished a years worth of shredding yesterday. Luckily DH helped me or I’d probably still be shredding. We came up with a plan so it’s not so much next time. Maybe not waiting an entire year would help haha. Last year I went to e-bills for just about everything so that has definitely helped on the shredding.

Good job!!

I know the feeling....:headache: I returned a few unneeded things yesterday and ended up with about $60 in cash/debit card credit plus a store credit at LL Bean and at Target.... and while I'm doing the happy dance and stashing the cash in the emergency fund envelope, DH is ordering himself a $75 jacket!!! Just seems like I can't make headway sometimes!

I’ve been going strong with destashing the past few days!!

I keep the shredder in the mudroom (near the kitchen where the mail is sorted). If I have something that needs shredding such as a credit card offer, it gets placed on top of the shredder and when there is a stack and/or I have a child who needs a chore, the shredding gets done. Usually only takes a few minutes. I have e-bills and online statements for the majority of my stuff, so there is actually very little to shred most of the time. And if I have a big pile, I hold on until spring or summer when we might be having a fire outside (either for fun or to burn brush) and I burn the stuff. It is MUCH quicker than shredding. Once I took an entire crate of banking paperwork and cancel checks camping with us and used it to start the fire every day! I came home with an empty crate and I didn't have to worry about bringing newspapers or fire starters!

The biggest thing I did today was the craft supplies. I am SO excited about that. I don’t really have any craft skills but I have a lot of various craft supplies. They’ve been moved around the past few years and finally ended up in a plastic 3 drawer thing in one of the basement closets. It was a nightmare though, no organization and I pretty much had to go through all 3 drawers to find what I wanted. They were stuffed so full they were hard to open. It was so bad at Christmas time I bought a new bag of hot glue sticks instead of trying to find the ones I already had. Over the summer DH and I moved some old cheap cabinets to the laundry room to store stuff in instead of junking them like originally planned. One of them was holding some shipping supplies but it seemed like a waste. I moved that stuff somewhere else and sorted the craft supplies. While DH was getting his oil changed he stopped at the dollar tree and got me some of those plastic shoe boxes with lids. I made labels and oh my goodness I love how organized everything is. I took some pictures of my project so I might post them when I get a chance. It was the thing I was least dreading organizing but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be and I love the results. Now the 3 drawers organize some seasonal stuff and work so much better for that purpose.

WONDERFUL JOB!! I cleaned out my craft/school supply closet late last year and I still get excited every time I open it and see a clean closet!

I didn’t plan on it but I ended up working some in the laundry room and the basement. Moved some stuff around and organized. It’s hard to stop when you’re on a roll!

I agree! Yesterday I ended up cleaning out a drawer full of electronics junk in the kitchen buffet. Most of it is going into a recycling center at the cell phone store, some will get sold/given away, and some was just plain trash! Not sure why DH and DS both felt compelled to keep their own unworking phones, but THEY can deal with keeping them in their own space.... they don't need to take up a kitchen drawer any longer!

I also reached out to my MIL. She’s working a second job to save money because my teenage SIL is pregnant. I told her what we had if she wanted it and she was very grateful as they haven’t really bought anything for the baby yet and their budget is tight. It’s helping her out and it’s a win for us, I can finally stop moving that large heavy stroller multiple times a day out of my way in the laundry room. I had planned on donating it and the car seat & bases to a local pregnancy center but I’m glad I dragged my feet on doing it since they can use it.

It feels really good to donate.... but it feels DOUBLY good to donate when you KNOW who is getting it and that it is really needed!:thumbsup2

DH and I also decided on doing a monthly trip to the recycling center. Our city started curbside recycling last year but there is a lot of stuff they don’t take. We have a bunch of stuff to go so I’ve been working on getting it all together.

We try to stick with just going to the transfer station/dump/recycling center just about once a month, but sometimes the cardboard just builds up too much and we have to go more often. Most of the cardboard is due to my WW job and I am frustrated that they don't see fit to want to pay me for at least one trip a month to the transfer station. I may push the issue this year. Good for you for planning a monthly trip. Perhaps you could pencil it in on the calendar for the first or last Saturday of the month and make it a treat by going out for a coffee together afterwards! "Date morning at the Dump!" :rotfl:

I’m not feeling all that tired so I might work on my scrapbook for a little bit after DS goes to sleep. We have a double cabinet in the kitchen that has gotten out of hand so I think that will be my plan for tomorrow while DH is at work if DS cooperates.

Sounds like a plan!!

What do you guys do with your bad/used batteries? Like the AAA/AA those type. I have a box of them because I thought you weren’t supposed to throw them away. I do have the 9V taped up with electrical tape, I read about them being a fire hazard.

I had a drawer dedicated to used batteries. It got heavier and heavier and heavier.... and I finally took it to the transfer station and asked where to put it.... and they told me to put it with the trash!!!!!:sad2: So I no longer separate them. That being said, we transitioned mostly to rechargeables, plus the kids are grown so we don't have as many toys that run through the batteries fast.

Yesterday I got a full trunk load to the Goodwill!!!!!!!! It felt great! I had some stuff lingering here for YEARS that I was waffling on.... and now that it is gone, I am RELIEVED! I did pull out a few of the nicer more re-sellable things in case I decide to do that indoor flea market next month.... but I am vowing here (again) that if I do NOT do the flea market, the stuff is out the door (either donation or consignment) by March1!! I'm putting a note in my bullet journal to remind myself of that come the end of February!

On today's agenda.....

laundry (always)

putting up some window plastic (like to finish the downstairs)

cleaning out at least one drawer (not sure which one yet)

and make 10 cards (I have an opportunity to sell some but I need to provide some samples by Tuesday)

2-3 miles on the TM

NOT vacuuming, as my vac flamed out a few weeks ago and DH hasn't looked at it yet, like I asked.:confused3

meal planning for next week (trying to make it through the month without a major shop so we are down to bare shelves in the freezer.... but I can do it!!). I did buy one nice piece of pork on sale yesterday and we will do pulled pork sandwiches on Monday when DD is home, since we all like that and it is easy.

make beds and clean three toilets

drop off and/or pick up DS and his friends when they go bowling this afternoon.

That's it for now! Sounds like an exciting day, doesn't it!??:rotfl2: TTYL............P

So far today I purged my sock drawer, a real eye-opener lol! Wow, just amazing what I was able to put into the rag bucket. :scared1:I also tossed a cookie sheet and 2 pizza pans along with some mis-matched wine glasses I never use.

My problem is that I inherited my mother's home and possessions 12 years ago and then 4 years ago my friend divorced her husband of 32 years and wanted to start anew and give him nothing so I got a ton of stuff. (Her husband was having an affair with her youngest son's ex fiance so don't feel sorry for him, just wait for the movie, lol!)

So I basically have 3 household's worth of dishes, furniture, etc. that I have been paring down, donating and throwing out. I am working on my garage further today organizing and tossing.

I may be imaging it but I felt I got the stinkeye from my garbage men the other day. ;)

I have 2 old ipod nanos (one we think is brand new, DH found it in his closet and doesn't remember where it came from) and an old ipod touch that still work...

If either of your nanos is a 1st gen, you may be able to return it to Apple. There was a recall on them a few years ago. Something about the battery I think. We sent in DD's, which was still in good working order, and they exchanged it for a brand new nano! She already had a touch by then so DH uses it for workouts.

We have to be out of the house by Feb. 23. I am so glad I found this thread over a year ago. I have so much decluttering done. Only problem is, it is all totes in a storage shed. :cool1: Good job! It will be easier and cheaper not to move all that extra stuff. Are you moving locally or long distance?

While I know this isn't much, but I cleaned out my mail and email today. I had a huge pile of unopened mail that was just nagging at me, plus I had just too much email coming in.

I made arrangements to have an auction house pick up all of my parents household goods, plus took care of much of their banking today. I talked to my middle DS and made plans to clean out one room a day until everything is purged. Hopefully we can get it done before we have the auction for my parents and they can just take our stuff too and add it to my parents things.

Sounds like you are making lots of progress! Way to go!

 on the 1st bold & :rotfl: on the 2nd!

The holiday bins are STILL sitting in the house but will be going to the attic today. It's supposed to be really warm here today so I plan to finish the garage too. I washed a load of miscellaneous winter stuff and collected some of the kids' boots and shoes in good condition. I am bagging it all up to take to my school next week. There are always kids who need things there.

The kids' closets desperately need to be addressed this weekend too. We moved their clothes to the closet and moved the old wire toy shelves in them for storage. I bought fabric bins to keep socks, underwear, etc. but DS has everything all jumbled up in there. Both kids need to move some toys or donate them to make more space.

We have a 3 day weekend so I'm hoping to make some decent progress!

That father is out there! Train wreck, crazy.

I have the same problem with inheriting stuff. It comes mostly from family. We need to pare down too. I feel guilty a lot of the time because it meant something to them at one time. That's why they gave it to me. But if we don't have a use for it.... Ugh. So I try to save some of the small sentimental stuff, but the rest has to go.

I had a lamp that was my grandparents. It had a colonial looking couple dancing at the base (very pretty), white with gold painting outlining it. I can still picture it in their living room. It's been in storage in our house forever. The shade was no good, that's not a biggie. But the gold had worn off. The felt bottom was gone. It was just a project I had no time for, for a piece that wasn't me or us. So I'll keep the memory but it was donated. I did feel a twinge of guilt letting it go. How nutty is that?

The easy thing was getting a box together this morning of winter wear (boots, shoes, and ski bibs/pants) that the kids had outgrown. That will go off to consignment. I love making some money off the stuff we don't use any longer.

It also feels good to donate. I have a bag of stuff by the door to go now too. :)

On today's agenda.....

laundry (always) Three loads done... one is awaiting folding, one is drying on rack, and one is in the dryer.... hampers are empty.

putting up some window plastic (like to finish the downstairs) Finished the last 4 downstairs windows!!

Mostly done but I need to confirm DH's schedule and DS's schedule for the week before I finalize it.

drop off and/or pick up DS and his friends when they go bowling this afternoon. Schedule to head out in 45 minutes to pick him up.

That's it for now! Sounds like an exciting day, doesn't it!??:rotfl2: TTYL............P

Also made a double batch of chocolate chocolate chip zucchini muffins as a treat for DS and DD!! Now to keep myself away from them!

So far today I purged my sock drawer, a real eye-opener lol! Wow, just amazing what I was able to put into the rag bucket. :scared1:I also tossed a cookie sheet and 2 pizza pans along with some mis-matched wine glasses I never use.

How do socks stack up like that!! DD has TONS of socks in her room!

My problem is that I inherited my mother's home and possessions 12 years ago and then 4 years ago my friend divorced her husband of 32 years and wanted to start anew and give him nothing so I got a ton of stuff. I used to feel that way when we paid a trashman.... like he was judging me by my refuse!!:lmao:

Great suggestion!

Way to go on the donations!! I have not taken ours yet and that is a goal this weekend.

I'm heading into town later today to pick up DS and may try to find another few things to bring along to donate!

I washed a load of miscellaneous winter stuff and collected some of the kids' boots and shoes in good condition. I am bagging it all up to take to my school next week. There are always kids who need things there.

That's a great idea. I work in an elementary school and the nurse always needs boots, coats, mittens, etc.

Maybe offer a reward to those who help.... maybe a Disney movie night with popcorn!??

I've started giving gifts that are rather "emotional less" (if that makes sense)... practical things like fancy shampoo, restaurant gift cards, etc. I didn't want my family (mostly my parents and kids) feel like they had to hold on to EVERYTHING I give them for sentimental reasons! And I've started trying to part with some of my stuff (things that only have meaning to me). I know that my family (mostly my DD) would be paralyzed with guilt and emotional attachment if something were to happen to me and my "stuff" needed to be sorted. :scared: And I can see my parents starting to clean out, pare down, and sort stuff.... and I have given them my full blessing to say good-bye to anything I've ever given them (except for my love and the grandkids!). NO guilt, no emotional attachment! Enjoy it, use it, part with it!

Anyhow.... all of that was to say I UNDERSTAND about the lamp!

****************

Off to try and finish up my list before I have to leave to pick up DS!.......P

Was able to sell my sons drum set he never uses and also got rid of about 10-15 shirts he doesn't wear anymore. Woo!!

I had a forced cleanout today. DH has been working on cleaning out an old octogon fishtank that had been sitting empty in the dining room for years. We are going to move the pet lizards into it. He wanted it at the bottom of our stairs in an area that was just accumulating laundry.

So the fish tank is now in its new home, and I am in the process of doing 3 complete loads of laundry.

Of course my plan has gone undone for today.

More boxes of stuff belonging to the ex packed and waiting to be picked up. Picked a few more things from the closet that the kids have outgrown. Pile of bills and papers sifted and sorted and a good chunk in the recycling bin. That seems to be a weekly job.
I can't wait for the weather to improve so I can try a yard sale again. We won't have as much stuff as last year (ex's military stuff and some furniture brought in some good $$ that helped pay for last year's Disney trip), but anything we bring in is better than none, plus the stuff is out of my house.

A few weeks ago a donation pick up was supposed to come by and they never did. Supposed to be another one coming Tuesday so I will put all that stuff out plus at least two more big boxes with it. I was looking for one thing in the garage and found at least three boxes of clothes and toys I can post on a swap site. Plus I finally decided my kids are too big for the sit n stand so I posted that also. So I didn't find what I was looking for out there but I am getting rid of at least four boxes of junk in addition to the stuff I'm donating! Yay!!!!

A major carload of glass taken to the recycling dumpster at our waste industries today. 10 cases of beer bottles that my father (who passed away in 1988) had gotten to use in his micobrewery attempt along with old canning jars that I weeded out of the keepers and a broken DVR were all taken. My family NEVER threw possibilities out. :rotfl: I am realistic in my future canning endeavors and have enough and could not find any takers.

I also did some weeding out of cookware and an email to co-workers found homes for excess corning ware and pyrex pie pans (5) and casserole pans (5). My pantry is impressively neat and tidy! :thumbsup2

I sent an email to a local free clinic to see if they want a new unused wheelchair. Hopefully a new home soon for it.

So far so good. I've already donated 3 boxes of clothing, shoes, and some toys. But I've decided to try something really radical. I realized that I am pretty much washing the same clothes during the week and still have some pretty stocked (though neatly and better organized now) closets and dressers. So, I'm thinking I should just pull 2 weeks worth of outfits, pajamas, and necessities (shoes and winter coats and stuff like that of course) for everybody, and see if we can really learn to live with less. I think we could do it and It should make parting with more things much easier. I'll let you guys know how it goes. :thumbsup2
