2014 Disneyland 1/2 Marathon Weekend ** Check-In ** Updated 7/29 with Corral Info

One thing I have realized now that I'm trying to run outside again (running the streets outlining Disneyland is practically the perfect distance for my short runs with Galloway's app) is that I need to find a new approach for hydrating while running. It's no issue during the events themselves, but I usually (a) forget to bring a water bottle with me or (b) when I do remember it, I get annoyed by the way it feels in my hands and how the water moves with my stride. It just throws me off. I just don't know a better way other than trying to find somewhere with water fountains or something like that.

How long is that DL run you do? Is it the block all around the parks? Might have to try that.

Somewhere around 3 miles. Not sure the exact distance, but I was able to go through two of my short distances on the training app and still have enough time for my cool down. It's quite literally the block around the park. Harbor, Katella, Ball and Disney Way. Should be simple enough to add an extra block where I need to to make the route a tad bit longer as the weeks go on. I'm a few weeks behind the actual training plan, so I'm kind of tweaking it to what works for me.

Not gonna lie, the magic mile thing still gets me confused sometimes. But I believe this is correct. U could always plant a water bottle in some bushes somewhere on ur run before u start running. I have done that a few times. Just make sure it is a sealed bottle of water so u can be sure it hasn't been tempered with

Sunglasses are something I need to look into. But I have to get prescription which I'm worried about destroying or losing. I just can't focus on anything when I wear sunglasses, at all. I don't run in my glasses and I don't have contacts so I kind of run blind half the time.

Get your full prescription from the eye doctor and order something from a place like goggles4u.com. You aren't wearing them all the time and they are inexpensive so you don't have to worry so much.

I use a Nathan hydration pack. I would use a waist pack if I didn't have a hinky shoulder that can't be trusted...since I have one of those and therefore can't always reach both sides for water, it's the backpack. I use it in races too, especially Disney races, since I can't trust that the water will agree with me (Disney uses dasani which is municipal water and in Anaheim and Orlando that ruins my stomach).

Sunglasses are something I need to look into. But I have to get prescription which I'm worried about destroying or losing. I just can't focus on anything when I wear sunglasses, at all. I don't run in my glasses and I don't have contacts so I kind of run blind half the time. I can see far/well enough that I can see what I need to but that all goes out the window when I put on sunglasses. I should probably buck up and buy a good pair soon. And thanks for the reminder about a driver's license/ID. All day I remind people that it's a good idea to carry your idea with you at all times and yet I always forget. A RoadID would be a good idea too! See, that's partially my problem with the wrist pocket depending on how long the run is. I usually end up playing hot potato with it at some point and swapping wrists because it starts to drive me batty. But sometimes I run out of space for everything I need.
Do you have everyday RX sunglasses for driving or other? I need my glasses for distance and while I can run without them, the lack of clarity really bothers me. I can't wear contacts anymore so have had RX sunglasses for years. After 1 year of wearing my "fashion" ones while running, I broke down and bought some sports ones, I'd looked for years but they were either too goggle like or not enough of a wrap for what I wanted. The brand I found has magnetic interchangeable lenses so I have a clear set for night running and then trail lenses which work I'm everything from low/variable light to full sun. Not cheap in my prescription (progressives) but oh, worth every penny.

I currently have no sunglasses, RX or otherwise. Not gonna pay even a cheap amount for something I can't see out of and I keep reallocating my money elsewhere then investing in a good RX pair. I've just been looking into some relatively good deals I get through work but I still haven't just done it. Now I'm waiting to see how things go with a tooth problem I have and if that doesn't end up being as much as I'm anticipating (probably not my luck through) I'll just finally give in and get a pair.

Qhat brand did you end up finding, if you don't mind my asking?

Mine are Switch Vision, I looked at pretty much every sports brand out there and for me, they were by far the best. Oakleys are too big for my face and nothing else came close to being more of a wrap style and could be made as progressives.

You have now said this twice and so I suppose it is what you mean...you can't see out of sunglasses? This is odd and I've never heard of it. Have you talked to your eye doctor about it? My eyes were messed up by LASIK and they are slowly slowly healing from that damage (after upwards of 14 years) and if I have polarized lenses I can't see in certain places and lights, but I had damage. And it's not across the board. I'd make sure to talk to get eye doctor about it if you haven't,

And few I actually use my polarized goggles4u sunglasses for running. Well I did until the arm broke off and my prescription changed. They were good for me. I didn't see a difference between the normal glasses I got from them and my eye doctor glasses. Can't compare sunglasses as I have not had fancy rx sunglasses.

This got me thinking though, what are some gadgets and accessories you have to have when you run? Training and/or for actual events?

I've got everything loaded on my phone, runkeeper to track pace and distance via GPS, a workout timer with my intervals so I know when to run and walk, and a ton of music and Pandora so I always have something to listen to through my earbuds.

Living in Vegas I always run with my water belt (nathan trail mix hydration belt :thumbsup2), I load Gatorade on one side and water on the other and always have a couple of Clif shot energy gels in the pouch. I drink a couple sips every walking break and eat a gel about every 2.5-3 miles. I didn't use it my first race but I'm so used to it now I plan on using it even during races. The gels, house (or room) key, and my phone all fit in the pockets so I don't need to carry anything (except a small camera on race days).

I ran a 6.5 mile training run tonight after the sun went down and it was still 105 degrees, even after emptying my bottles and eating 3 gels I was 4.5 lbs lighter when I finished. I quickly remedied that with a shake, water, Gatorade, and soup and sandwich though :rolleyes1.

ETA: I also use Oakley polarized Flak Jacket sunglasses, they were expensive but they don't move on my face and everything is crystal clear through them, absolutely love them.

I suppose I can 'see' in the sense it's not a big black world when I wear sunglasses, but I can't make out anything or focus when I wear them and have absolutely no depth perception - and my eyesight is not nearly that bad without them. I've had this problem long before I started wearing glasses and I've gotten so used to it that I barely even think about it so it's escaped my mind whenever I've seen my eye doctor. I need to write a reminder of sorts for the next time I go.

Does anyone use the Galloway app during the races? I love the app for training, but I find it can be a bit fussy and so I try not to mess with it too much during my runs. That said, I want to use my iPhone to take pix too and feel this might mess with the app. Does anyone have an suggestions for good apps that adjust the BMP on your favorite songs? Maybe that would work better? Does anyone use Galloway's interval toy? How does that work for you? I need something to tell me when to walk. Thanks :)

There's a website called jog.fm and you can plug in you're pace 10 min, 12 min, whatever, and it will pull up a bunch of songs that match. It's been awhile since I've been on it, but I think they also have playlists for times.

You're a wealth of information, I love it! I'll have to look into that as well, possibly.

I do! I do! ;) I'm actually letting a friend borrow my interval timer and I think I sold her on it after one use. It's a really, really great tool for keeping your intervals going without having to look at a watch. I definitely love it, and I'm pretty sure there are others out there who use it.

So last week I did my 4 mile run, one of which being a Magic Mile. Per your advice I got my GymBoss and it worked great! After the run I felt like I could have gone quite a bit further, and I really think the timing the run/walk more efficiently helped.

Next question - just to make sure I am following the Galloway program correctly - I read the 30 minute maintenance runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays as runs where you didn't run/walk, you should be running the whole time...

Is that the impression everyone else got?

Thanks!

Are you referring to the training programs available through the runDisney website? My impression has always been that you stick with whatever you have been training. So that means that even on maintenance runs you still run/walk at whatever interval you're using. I kind of mesh that program with the training program that's built into his App and the app has you keep your run/walk interval throughout every run.

Not sure about the more advanced programs, but if you're doing the beginner one, I'd say it's still intervals. Beginners can't be expected to run for 30 minutes straight.

Okay, thanks :) I'm in the Intermediate Level of the Galloway training, experienced but at the level that "you just want to finish standing" definitely not trying to improve my time.

I usually take a minute or two walk breaks in the 30 minute runs but try to run the whole thing :)

In the end, do whatever feels right to you. I've been using the app for a pretty long time now not just the written one and since it gives me the run and walk intervals I use them so I can keep my pace up. Otherwise I'd die along the way, but that's what my body tells me to do as well ;) I certainly cannot run 30 minutes without stopping.
