2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

Thanks for your suggestions.

We have put a lot of things in storage and not once this summer did we need to go to the unit and retrieve anything. The only missing item that I cannot find, is my Mickey Carry-on luggage I got as a gift from my kids. I think it got thrown away in a bigger piece of luggage that got wet when our basement flooded. That I am sad about. The rest of the items in our storage unit could all be taken away by the show Storage Wars. I know when we retrieve it, a lot of the items are going to be sold, donated or thrown in the dumpster.

We just did that. Our stuff was in our trailer, it sat for 2 years. As I unloaded it for DH to look through, he looked over and said keep nothing but the 3 or 4 items I knew he wanted that I had already separated. The only additional thing I kept was a box of papers I found that needed to be sorted.

Sorry about your Mickey carry on, that stinks.

Good job P!!!

If you feel bad about tossing torn sheets, I know that some animal shelters take blankets and towels. Ask them about the sheets.

DS12 managed to rip his 2 year old flannel sheets, I was not happy!! I think he snagged it on his cast.
I need to purge the kids sheets and get new. They've had the same cotton sheets for 12 years, and have held up surprisingly well. But I don't think they want Pirates of the Caribbean sheets anymore. LOL

Laughing here because DS had to sleep on his old (rough and picky) Buzz Lightyear sheets when we went on vacation because I couldn't find enough twin sets!

I started remembering that my church had a "rip and roll" event last year where they took clean old sheets and ripped and sewed them to make bandages for ???? (can't remember the country). Anyhow, I'll put aside my "past-their-prime" sheets and keep an eye in the church bulletin for when they might be having this event in the fall. I am not above repairing/patching sheets that are overall in good shape but get one snag.... but I have a few that are absolutely see-thru in certain spots and no amount of patching is going to help that! But I did locate a few "missing" sheets during my closet clean out yesterday, so I should have plenty of sheets on hand for all of the beds now!

Tomorrow is day 21 that our house has been on the market and no offers.
Saturday, I am decluttering the mud room again. We have 2 built in closets up high in the mud room, plus the regular closet. Everything is going to be taken out, so I can paint all the walls, and inside the closet. I need to get rid of the shoe rack, since I was told it looked like clutter.

Someone give me some courage to conquer this room, I swear to God, I have been doing this since May, every weekend, plus I used two weeks of my vacation to paint and declutter. Would you throw away board games or donate them, I also have a milk crate of children's books.

Hopefully having the motivation to SELL will help you power through the decluttering, cleaning, and painting this weekend! I would DONATE those things!

Board games are tough. Do they have all the pieces? If not, toss. If so maybe your local library will take them? Or school?
Kids books, we take those to the local used book store to sell (we either get credit or cash) or donate them to the library. They can either circulate them or use them for their local book sale.

I know folks who will take just the used game board to frame and put in a playroom or use for a craft... so even if it doesn't have every piece, it might still be worth donating.

Nice to know that you can live without so much stuff!!

Morning all! I was all set to take myself out for some yard sale adventures this morning, but I started thinking about how much stuff I'm trying to GET OUT of the house and decided to STAY HOME! Sure, the thrill of the hunt and finding something "new" is great, but I DON'T NEED ANYTHING!! Unless I were able to find some GREAT, LIKE NEW size 13 men's shoes for DS or some new pants for him for school, it would really be a big waste of time. So I am spending the time here at home, instead! I may go into town later to drop of my pile of donations and I won't be above stopping at the thrift store while I'm there.... but all in the name of "back to school" shopping!:thumbsup2

So far this year I have decluttered part of the basement, all of the attic, DD's room (at least it is organized, but I didn't part with anything), DS's room, part of the playroom, the junk drawer, the bathroom cabinets and closet, the linen closet, the Christmas decor, and a few of my dresser drawers. It feels good, but there is SO MUCH MORE to do! Wonder if DH would let me declutter the SHED today???

I'll report back later on any progress made!..............P

27 gallon paint cans and 19 quart size cans gone! Just for giggles I googled the paint recycling dates and found one for today so DH and I loaded the car and took them down. Huge line but it went fast. I now have 2 shelves cleared in the basement.

Eta also just took 4 big bags of plastic shopping bags to the grocery store.

Aw bummer! Sorry about your bag. Good luck with your move! Just think that anything you get done now, you won't have to worry about when the house has been sold. Fingers crossed it goes quickly!

You could also list free board games on Craigslist. Sometimes people use the parts to make jewelry & other things for etsy.

Thanks for the reminder! We are collecting a bag mountain in the garage.

DD14 went through her drawers this week. Mainly to show me that she needs clothes but she did collect a pile of about 16 shirts that are either too small or she doesn't like. She gets lots of hand me downs from a cousin.

I have not done any major projects but am trying to do little areas here and there. I tossed about 7 old partial bottles of sunscreen from previous years. I figured it was not worth a sunburn since I didn't know how old they were. I think I'm going to write the year on this year's bottles so I know.

DD20 moved into an apt. at school and took her bed. Her room looks much bigger with most of her clutter gone. I want to go through her room and put stuff away, donate, or pitch the items she won't need.

I need to go through the linen closet again because we got the kids bigger beds and don't need many twin sheets anymore. Plus we have a bunch of comforters so I hope to donate a few. It's nice to have extras for sleepovers or curling up in the basement but we have a ridiculous amount!

As soon as it gets a little cooler on a regular basis, I need to finish the garage. I had it looking much better but it is such a dumping ground for odds & ends! I'd like to have things in order so I can hibernate this winter without so many projects hanging over my head!

I wish the DIS had like buttons. I am on my IPad, and it is hard to copy and paste, plus type.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions again.

My dh side tracked me today. We remodeled our house 20 years ago and we had a few walls that needed floor trim. It was always on our " someday" and I am embarrassed that we never finished. We took the old trim off 20 years ago and we were going to strip off the old paint and re-stain-never happened. Throughout the years, my dh would go to Menards and buy floor trim, so he had half the house done. Today, he decided we needed to finish. We went to Menards, got the trim, when we got home my dh did all the measuring, cutting and sizing and I stained all the boards.

I am posting in the middle of the night with insomnia, I should just start tackling my mudroom closets so I can start painting, buy I am so darn tired, yet I can't sleep.

Don't be embarrassed.... we ALL have something like that in our house!! But it will feel SO GOOD when you are done!!

I call my DH the "classic 90%-er". He is pretty good at starting projects....and if I push he will get them at least to a "functional" stage... but almost NEVER, EVER completely finishes anything!! It makes me crazy!!

Our back deck is lovely.... he started it 10 years ago this past spring... and with some pushing from me (and help from his brother) he got it to the useable stage by the end of the summer that year... then the following spring I pushed him to finish the railings.... which he did.... all but ONE RAIL CAP.... which he FINALLY FINISHED last summer (9 years later) before my DD's graduation party... But of course we still have no hand railings on the stairs off the deck... even though one of the stairs has a top and bottom railing post! :sad2:

I won't even go INTO the 18 year old shed that wasn't never completely finished.... or the coffee table he was making me about 8 years ago (lots of expensive beautiful lumber sitting in various stages of cutting/glueing in the basement, probably warping), or the oak dining room hutch that he got to the half-finished stage in about 1993 (NO LIE) and has been sitting in his brother's woodworking shop covered with a tarp ever since.

Love the man ... he has TONS of great qualities.... but finishing projects is NOT one of them!! But I guess if he was asked, he could list plenty of MY bad traits too!! :rolleyes1

****************

Morning all! I decided to tackle a HUGE project yesterday and started cleaning out the SHED!! Yup.... that crazy 18 year old shed that was never really "finished". I will post some before and after pictures later for the full effect, but needless to say.... ICK!!! Because it was never fully finished and because we live in the woods, the neighborhood squirrels, chipmunks, and mice have decided that this makes a nice cozy home in the winter. The shelves and floor were covered in acorn shells, mouse nesting material, and other "smelly" bits that I won't even go into!

I started by pulling out every single item (except the chipper.... it is heavy so I just worked around it). I sorted as I pulled stuff out and filled our biggest wheelbarrow up three times over with stuff for the dump. Everything went STRAIGHT into my car for an immediate trip. Not gonna let this junk sit around any longer. It would be no lie or exaggeration to say that I probably threw away over 100 pounds of Scotts lawn fertilizer that sat so long it got rock solid.... and that dang stuff is expensive....:sad2: Plus I threw out tons of Miracle-Gro.... must have been on sale or clearance at one point because, no lie, there were at least 10-15 boxes of the stuff on the uppper shelves... but the boxes were chewed on and disintegrating and damp from ??? (I shutter to think) and EWWWWW! I did start counting the boxes as I put them into trash bags, but got disgusted and gave up.

Then I started throwing away the "collection" of plastic pots. We don't start our own seedlings very often and even if we did, we would never need this collection. I've been slowly throwing it away for a few years now (lots of them were stacked outside the shed and I got rid of them last year before DD's party). And next I threw away a few broken tools, some leaky hoses, an old bundle of electric wiring and tons of broken sprinkler heads and a few reels of string trimmer refill string.

Then came the sweeping..... it was endless. I stood on a deck chair to sweep the "stuff" from the top and middle shelves. I held my breath while doing it because I could tell from the smell I probably shouldn't be breathing the dust (combined fertilizer and poo). I swept it all down onto the floor and then swept that into a pile and scooped it up with a big shovel. I'll bet the trash bag weighed 4-6 pounds!

But then it was time to go to the dump. The only things I put back in the shed were the remaining fertilizer and grass seed that were still good. Rain was predicted for last night/today, so I didn't want to ruin it.

If the rain holds off today (or maybe even if it doesn't) I plan to hose out the inside of the shed totally and then let it dry for a few days before giving the inside a coat of stainblocker paint/primer.. just to brighten it up and help cover the smell!

And I am going to cut down some massive trees/weeds that have grown up around the shed, fix the siding where it is lifting/buckling, fix the doors that swelled and don't shut/open properly anymore, and then give the exterior two coats of paint (it is peeling badly). But we really need to finish the unfinished soffits to prevent the critters from getting BACK INSIDE! I just wanted to tack up some wire mesh.... fast and easy and fairly inexpensive (and I could do it myself).... but of course, even though he has had 18 years to finish this, DH decides he wants it finished "properly"!! :headache: But he is currently in the middle of building a HUGE raised bed garden in the back yard.... so I'm not sure when he thinks he might have time for this???

Anyhow.... done ranting about this. But will say it was a REALLY GOOD feeling to drop a huge load at the transfer station and another load at the Goodwill yesterday. I will never miss the tablecloths and other junk that I donated. I was going to try and sell DS's outgrown pants, but decided it wasn't worth the hassle right now.

Off to talk to my WISH board friends and then go be productive.... the rain clouds are rolling in, as I sit here....P

Yep, our dh's are very similar.:rotfl2:

Wow you rocked that shed.

Hi all! Haven't posted in a WHILE because have felt like I was making any progress other than shuffling things around until I find them a permanent place. However, today I finally got around to tackling my boys room! 2 bags of trash - broken toys, games missing a lot of pieces, ripped/non re-usable clothes out the door. 2 bags of donations, from their room plus 3 others that have been sitting here & never made it out the door are in DH's car to be dropped off this week. 2 small shopping bags of hand-me-downs for my sister and SIL ready to drop off. 2 tubs of stuff for the consignment sale next month ready to be tagged. AND I found the missing bag of summer clothes...
Feeling pretty good about today's progress!

Pamela! I'm going to yell at you!! Never ever sweep mouse poop without a respirator!!! It's very very dangerous!! Like deadly dangerous!
Promise me you will never ever do that again! And if you start to feel weird or can't breathe etc go straight to the ER!!!!!!

OK off my "I live on a farm too" soap box.

Good job on the shed though!! I'm tackling mine not this coming weekend but the next. The first Saturday of every month the town dump is open so I'm off to take a load of bulky waste to them.

I also need to clean out the wood shed and pull the older wood out to burn first and rent a wood splitter. The state cut down our 100 year old maple tree but I made them leave all the wood so we could age it and burn it. Saved $1000 last year on oil by burning, this year it will be more since DH will be home more to watch it.

Really? I figured it was icky but not that dangerous. So sorry to make you worry. I'll use a mask next time (hopefully there won't BE a next time!). I held my breath really good though! :rotfl2:

Our dump is really good about taking nearly anything. Glad I don't have to go just at specific times.

That is great! I actually cut down some smaller trees yesterday near the shed.... it is astonishing how quickly they grow! We definitely had a few that had some useable firewood, but we don't have a wood stove or fire place. I put some of the large logs aside to burn in the fire pit, but the rest will just rot away in the woods. I can't even sell it to burn as camp wood even though we have many campgrounds in our town.... we live too far off the track for folks to stop here for camp wood.:(

*****************

Morning all! Well... fortunately I haven't died from mouse poo dust inhalation! But lesson learned!! I pulled out the heavy duty scrub brush and some spray soap yesterday and the hose and gave the ENTIRE inside of the shed a good washing! The ceiling and walls mostly just got a strong spray, but the shelves and floor got squirted with soap and scrubbed and rinsed. It is so much cleaner.... but still smelly! After sweeping out and wiping down all of the excess water, I left the doors open and a box fan running in the doorway all day yesterday. It wasn't dry enough to paint yet, but definitely drier. But DH had to put the rototiller away in there last night, so I'm sure the floor is dirty now.

I'm starting to rethink my plan of painting the inside. It would help and brighten it up, but it would be TON of work and one coat wouldn't cover everything. It is very ROUGH inside the shed and it was built about 90% from reclaimed wood from other projects so there is a variety of paints and finishing and I'm not even sure if the paint would stick everywhere. It may not be worth the effort. But I'm still thinking about it.

And I am at a standstill with fixing up the outside for now. DH really want to fix the soffits "right" and I can't really do anything outside until he does that.... the only hope is if I go buy the wood needed myself and start doing it MYSELF.... sometimes that spurs him on to get it done! Oh... the horrors of a woman with power tools!!:rotfl2:

Anyhow.... today may need to be spent doing regular housework! With all of this outside work and decluttering, the regular stuff (laundry, vacuuming, dusting) has been rather neglected. DS did clean his room very thoroughly yesterday (because the alternative was to come help out in the yard :lmao:), so that is good. And I did take about 15 minutes to declutter the stack of books and magazines that always seems to be growing next to my side of the bed. I moved 2 cooking magazines to the cookbook shelves in the kitchen, put aside a small stack of kids chapter books to send to my nephew in TX (they were from DS's room clean-out and I wanted to re-read them), and a handful of books and magazines went into the donation bucket in the mudroom.

I also re-arranged a few shelves in my basement pantry that hold my overflow of mason jars. Since I sold that popcorn popper a few weeks ago I hadn't re-arranged to make better use of that space. I have a terrible habit of saving glass jars for "just in case" but with my ever-growing mason jar collection, I don't need so many oddball jars....so I saved a few of the "better" ones and the rest went into the recycling bin. And now all of my overflow glassware (a few extra drinking glasses along with the jars) fit neatly on the two shelves they are assigned. And I was able to use the empty space from the popper to hold my big canning pot.

Anyhoooo.... I'll report back if I get any more decluttering done.... and I'll try to post some "before" and "during" pictures of the shed today! TTYL.........P

It is almost like they are afraid too. :lmao:

We got the mudroom closet cleaned out, painted, new electrical plates put on the outlets, new light fixture. But everything is sitting in my great room. But the flooring guy is coming to measure the kitchen and mudroom for vinyl, and a repairman is coming to fix my wash machine again. It is 4 years old and we have a 5 year warranty and it has been fixed so many times. We claimed lemon law, but the manufacturer says no, since it is under warranty.

I took my parents to a church picnic yesterday and cleaned put my refrigerator. I had one long donkey butt day.

Might as well leave the stuff out of the closet until the new flooring is in, right?? Lucky that the washer is under warranty, but too bad they wouldn't stand behind it more and give you a new one. What brand is it? I'll be sure to stay away from that type!

WOOHOO on a nice clean fridge! I should wipe mine out today. We have been "out" of grocery money for the month for a few weeks now and I have been refusing to pull money from another fund to buy groceries.... so the fridge is getting pretty bare! This would be a good time to give it a thorough wipe-out! ......................P

Yes Pamela the mouse stuff can be deadly, a few years ago we had a HS girl in the neighboring town die from cleaning out the sports shed riddled with mouse poop. It was her "punishment" for something sports related. Not coming to practice or something like that.

As for the smell, the only way you can combat it is to use KILZ primer first but I can't guarantee that will work either. I have never been able to get mouse smell out of any untreated lumber. The problem is keeping the mice out, that's probably not going to happen. One thing you can do is keep the grass seed or any other "food" in sealed containers and keep fabric material to a minimum. We bagged up the lawn mower bag in a plastic garbage bag and taped it up. No weed blocker unless it's sealed in a garbage bag, etc.

OH MY!!! That is a tragic story!

I'm not overly concerned about totally killing the smell. After all, it is a storage shed in the woods and it already smells better than it did! I try to use up all the grass seed when I open a bag, but when I do put away grass seed I always seal the bag with clear tape and sometimes put the bag into another bag.... but the important word in that sentence is "I" .... DH, not so much. "Toss it in" seems to be his motto. My Dad is telling me that shellac is the only thing that will cover the smell.

Other than grass seed there isn't much "food" out there. I don't keep bird seed in the shed (and I only buy it and put it out in the winter due to bears) and I don't think they care about eating Grub-X or anything like that. But they do love to chew up anything fabric.... twine, work gloves... you name it! It all makes nice bedding!

Anyhoooo... he bought the lumber last night to fix the soffits, so we are on the right track!!:yay:

Not much decluttering done here yesterday. I stuffed a new pillow for DD with the fluff from a few older ones (DS's Buzz Lightyear and Zurg pillows) and I will save those pillow cases for him with his Buzz collection in the attic. So that was sort of a decluttering (no big bulky pillows stored in the attic) and sort of a repurpose/recycle (turned the fluff into a new pillow). And other than some yard work, I only managed to throw away DS's old lunch sack. It was DONE with it's useable life and I found him a nice new one on sale at LL Bean earlier this summer.

Today is my work evening, so I'll be preparing for that this morning, so probably only have time for a small project or a bit of yard work after breakfast. I don't see any big decluttering time on the horizon today.

Hope everyone else is plugging away at it or enjoying their summer.... or both! I imagine we will all have a bit of a renewed vigor in our decluttering when the fall weather hits! TTYL................P

Well I haven't fell off the destashing bandwagon but I'm definitely at a standstill... I posted stuff on craigslist at the beginning of July and no bites yet. My ebay sales have been really slow too. I did add a few new listings this week though so hopefully some stuff starts trickling out one package at a time.

The past few days I have been deep cleaning the kitchen. I'm embarrassed to say this, but we have lived in this house 5.5 years and I'm cleaning things I have NEVER cleaned here before. Specifically, the cabinets! We have white cabinets that have food and gunk splattered all over them. It's been bothering me for a long time don't know what took me so long to actually do something about it. I'm only doing one little section per day so I don't get burnt out but I have a good system and it's not taking too much elbow grease. The ones that I have done look soooo awesome! I'm not sure what color they were before but I don't think they were white lol. I've also done the dishwasher, sink, range hood, oven, stove top, microwave, toaster, coffee pot, and tea pot. It's crazy how icky and filmy they were and now they look brand new again! I had no idea it was possible! I'm also scrubbing down the walls and things too. So clean I almost don't want to move :lmao:

Might as well leave the stuff out of the closet until the new flooring is in, right?? Lucky that the washer is under warranty, but too bad they wouldn't stand behind it more and give you a new one. What brand is it? I'll be sure to stay away from that type!

WOOHOO on a nice clean fridge! I should wipe mine out today. We have been "out" of grocery money for the month for a few weeks now and I have been refusing to pull money from another fund to buy groceries.... so the fridge is getting pretty bare! This would be a good time to give it a thorough wipe-out! ......................P
. My wash machine is a Kitchen Aid. The 2 repairmen flip a coin when they see my name come up, and they call my wash machine "the devil child". He came at noon on Monday and talked new appliances with us. Who else would know what the best appliances besides a repairman.

The ones that I have done look soooo awesome! . Good job. I heavy duty cleaned my kitchen cupboards about 5 times in 10 years. My grandma is probably rolling over in her grave. She used to lecture me on Spring cleaning. We just have a new name for it now- "decluttering."

Morning all! Busy days around here with DD home for just a few "hours" between her trip abroad and going back to school.... so not much going on in the destash frontier. But I DID destash my car glove box yesterday! I was searching for some gift cards that DD got (and never did find them...:headache: ) but I was so annoyed digging through the glove box that I threw ALL OF IT into a box, carried it into the kitchen, and only put back what I felt was absolutely necessary.

I consolidated all of the car repair/maintenance paperwork to one envelope (why does EVERY repair shop think that you need a BIG envelope with their advertising on it???), put back all of the cards that I carry in there for "just in case" (museum memberships, library cards, gift cards), and put back the emergency cash envelope, Advil, 100 cal pack of nuts, feminine hygiene products, tire pressure gauge. And that was it! All of the "extra" plastic ware from fast-food went into the "brown bag lunches" area of the kitchen, the random lollipops and sugar packets went into the trash along with a plethera of expired coupons.

I can actually CLOSE the glove box without having to re-arrange the contents.

BABY STEPS.... right??:thumbsup2 .......................P

DS18 and I destashed the 2 freezers yesterday. Tossed all the old, buried in the bottom, meat, frost bitten freezer meals and anything that I didn't want.

Today I went to the truckload sale at the butchers and stocked up on fresh meats and divided and labeled it all. I also made a list of what I have before I put it in the freezer. I spent $270 and got meat for 49 meals. That's an average of $5.50 a meal!

I still have a bit of room in the freezer down stairs though, so I may go back and see what kind of deals they have on fish. I think they had tilapia for $5 a package, and it looked like there were 3 -4 pieces in each bag.

Next up is making a menu off what I have in the pantry. I'd like to have a month of meals planned and use up stuff in the pantry.

no other destashing today though, we had camp and doctors appts.

School starts Tuesday so I'm hitting the floor running starting then!

Hey all! How's everyone doing? Kiddos are heading back to school about now, so hopefully we are all finding a bit more time for cleaning, organizing and destashing/decluttering!

I am still in a holding pattern with the shed. After I cleaned the inside I was waiting for it to dry before painting it, but then it rained and the inside was damp again and then I had DD home for just 4 days between her trip abroad and her return to school, so no shed work during that time. Assuming I DON'T get called to work tomorrow (I work as a sub in the school system), I will be tackling the shed tomorrow. DH doesn't think I should bother to paint the inside and I am starting to agree with him.... but I'll think about it a bit more.

And then..... OH THE POSSIBILITIES! Home without kids (when I don't get called to work)!! SO MUCH CLEANING can be done! I see lots of organizing in my future!:rotfl2: TTYL.................P
