2014 - destash thread The Year of the Great Purge

I cleaned off my craft table today, well a third of it. Tossed a bunch of papers, put my vases away, and even sorted DD's rainbow loom box, the mix match colors were driving me nuts. LOL

It was prom night last night as well as post prom party and I did a lot of driving so I'm going on about 3 hours sleep. It's been a long day! But at least I got a little something accomplished.

Got rid of a juicer I have never used. Got an e-mail from the school asking to borrow one so I just donated it to them. The bad news is that I had to go down cellar to find it. I saw all the cr*p down there that still needs to be cleaned out. School is out in 2 weeks so then I will try to get rid of some more junk (I say that every year though, I hope this is the year I follow through)

Went to destash some knick knacks this morning but with them being older (made in the 30's) I decided to look them up on Ebay. Low and behold some are worth MUCH more than I thought and of course the salt and pepper shakers that I thought might bring bigger bucks or worth MUCH less, go figure.

So now I have some Bavarian China I am going to look into getting the biggest bang for my buck for.

Also have some depression glass. I get depressed when I look those up, know what I paid for them back in the 80's and they are selling for MUCH less now.

What have you found this weekend that is now out the door?

We thew out pillows and dropped about 7 tie blankets off at the Humane Society. There was an article in the paper this morning that our Humane Society was looking for different items and they wanted tie blankets. I was glad to see them go.

I was at an estate sale and I was talking to an antique dealer, and she was telling me how the price dropped on depression glass, silver wear, china. I got Bavarian china when I got married and never used it. Still sitting in a box.

I have 2 garbage bags of goodwill stuff to go and threw out another bag full of junk. I've been going through my son's bedroom which also became a catch all.. Still have more to go through in there. In a few weeks, all 3 of my girls will be staying with family for a week, so I plan to attack their room and get rid of things while they are not there to make me feel guilty about it! Their room is a disaster and they are all packrats! They come by it honestly though... I'm trying to not be a packrat anymore! LOL!

Hubs got a job, which means that once school is out next week I will cut my work hours for the summer to cut back on daycare costs. We can't afford childcare for all 4 on our salaries! Kind of pointless to work full time and not get paid. I hope to actually get some things cleared out and some projects done during my "time off"! :)

Just uploaded 17 items to CL. I hate having yardsales but I'm thinking of having one for the older stuff I have like clothes and dd's older clothes and shoes and price everything cheap. I also plan on selling the nice stuff on CL and Poshmark. Hopefully this summer we get stuff sold. I figure any money made will go towards our vacation fund for food.

I've been having issues with bad sinus and horrible headaches so please send me good vibes and lots of energy-lol!

Last week I cleaned out two bedrooms while kids are at school, so things could disappear without being noticed. DH and I are working hard painting bedrooms and hallway. Wanted to start on basement before kids are off for summer vacation but with only 2 days (!!!!!!!) to go I think the basement is going to have to wait. Donated a bunch of stuff to the school yard sale and in return earned $50 towards our fundraising goal for next school year, win-win situation.

This week I'm going through one room at a time and today I cleaned out my bedroom.
-I got rid of two purses , a pair of shoes, several shoe inserts and a bag of trash.
It was so much easier to clean my room since I did the huge clean out last time

Dh list our passports and I know it's somewhere in his junk. I won't go through his junk but I'm gonna tell him his goal is to shred all his papers and old bills. Dd wa 10 when she got her passport and she will be 16 in Dec. I think we have to renew it by 16 .

Tonight I'm going to try and list a few more items on CL.

Tomorrow I'm hoping to hit my spare room/ junk room

Have you had any luck with your CL listings? I try to post on there too, sometimes they sell, sometimes not. The few things I've posted recently haven't sold, so maybe I should post some others.

I told my kids that when they go to camp next week, I will be cleaning their rooms thoroughly, unless they don't need to be cleaned. They know that means a lot of stuff will be gone when they get back unless they can get tidied and organized themselves. I didn't mention it again, but noticed this morning that my daughter asked for 3 trash bags and was in tackling her closet. Next thing I knew, she had it all cleaned out and organized and was asking for the vacuum. :cool1: It's not perfect yet, but it is a LOT better! She had one bag of stuff ready to put in the donation bin, one bag of stuff that shouldn't have been in her room in the first place that needs to be put away properly, and one whole bag of trash - all on her own! Maybe this destashing stuff is rubbing off on her!

Got rid of the bowling banquet decorations today.
Today is DS13's last banquet so I'm handing them off to next parent.

Welcome to the thread. Most of us agree that we either set a 30 minute timer and we stay in the area for the solid 30 minutes and declutter. My attention is so bad, and this really helps me. I can start a project and end up doing 5 different things,, (wash, talk on the phone, hop on the internet, go to the bathroom.) The 30 minutes makes me stay focused and stay where I am and get through an area of the house.

I just decluttered another kitchen cupboard with all my spices. 2 shelves of spices. Does anyone have any good idea, how to keep spices more organized? When you purchase spices, do you dump them out to different containers? Please help with my delimma.

I've sold about $700 since I started atleast this is since I started keeping track. I'm sure we've sold about $1000. It has slowed down but if your patient you will have people interested. I just post a bunch of different items and keep renewing ad.

I'm not sure if it slowed down due to Facebook pages where you can sell or trade but I'm not comfortable with it. I don't want people looking up my fb page. Plus now if I join I'm not sure if that entire group will see when I comment or post something on my wall for friends and family.

I'm thinking of having a yardsales for stuff I want gone ASAP and at cheaper price. Nicer stuff I'll renew on CL or posh mark

I have a couple of lazy susans in my spice cupboard for my spices. Spices are put on there in alphabetical order (all bottles are the same size - you can get empty spice bottles at many stores, and then I store the extra that doesn't fit in the bottle in my basement pantry). They are also numbered on the cap. Getting them out is easy - I look for the name of the spice - and putting them back is easy because I look at the number. Does that make sense? :rotfl2: Call me a little OCD, I guess!

How does everyone store their table linens? I've been keeping mine in a couple of extra drawers in another room, but we are getting rid of that storage unit and I need to come up with another storage method. I have about 6 tablecloths, about 2 dozen cloth napkins for formal dining and a couple sets of placemats. Not a ton of stuff, but it does take up some space when everything is folded.

Hey all! Looks like some of you have been making great progress!! I've been out of the "declutter" pattern for a while, but DS's robotics team yard sale is this weekend and I am organizing it, so it has been a great incentive for cleaning out! I actually cleaned out the ATTIC last night!! I lost count of how many bins and boxes got removed, but it was probably 10! I found boxs of size 16 boys clothes that were hand-me-downs from my SIL that I don't think ever got worn by my DS (he kind of flew past that size), boxes of clothes of mine that I had forgotten about (not sure why they were there), broken Christmas decorations, overages of luggage (how many carry-ons does one family need??), craft/sewing supplies, etc. And it is GOING! I had to just move past DD's baby/childhood clothes that she wants to keep, but I was able to consolidate it into less boxes. And I had a HUGE plastic bin with just 3 items in it :confused3. Anyhow, I made some big strides, at least as far as the attic goes and hope to make a few more empty spaces in the basement tonight! I did tackle some of DS's stuff from the playroom last weekend.

TTYL...................P

thebeesknees,

Have you tried "space bags" to store your linens in? You can find them near the vacuum cleaners or in with coat hangers...

We LOVE them, out of season clothes are stored in them, our extra bedding... and they shrink down really small. Saves a huge amount of space.

Good luck with what ever you choose :goodvibes

Wish I had an answer for you!! My cabinets on the sides of the microwave hold my spices and they are only about 6 inches wide but deep. They stink!!! I need a better solution too.

Honestly, I got rid of all of it but 2 antique table clothes that were my MILs. I didn't see the point in keeping cloth napkins and tablecloths that I used once a year, if I hosted Christmas.
I'm jut waiting for DH to give me the go ahead to get rid of the cloths, but he's not ready to let go of them yet.
I have one set of placemats and they get washed and go right back on the table again.

Did not get nearly as much sorted last night as I had planned. I see a loooong evening in my future tonight. :(

Just bought DS a new desk so he is hoping to get the old one out of his room tonight for the sale , do that is good!

Still have so much crap in the basement that needs to be lugged up! And of course I'm at work today......but I'm mentally going thru boxes and closets and making a list of stuff to pull out when I get home. TTYL........P

Getting ready for our neighborhood garage sale in the morning. I have full bags of clothes from DS 22, DD 21 and 2 bags from DS 12.

I have spent the last 3 days pulling out some big items to get rid of. I figure that by getting big things out I will have more room to sort small things. We have a good amount of household items as well. Hopefully we will get rid of a bunch of stuff.
