(2014-2020) Disney's GRAND FLORIDIAN RESORT & SPA + VILLAS Information & Questions

Yes, timing was great, nothing overlapped. And, you're correct about what a difference the server can make, it's like night and day. A great server can even make up for a so-so meal. As for filets, I posted a CA Grill review on the CR thread. Spoiler alert: fantastic filet! (And Yachtsman Steakhouse has great filets, steaks, too). But, I'm sure you already know that;)

It was our second time at Sanaa and it was just as good as the first. But, it's not fun getting there, even from AK. Our bus arrived half-full, which seemed odd and it was standing room only, but luckily, it's a short trip. I highly recommend the bread service and the view is of course, unique. My apologies to the thread for this being a bit OT…

That's a smart technique and I'm glad you've enjoyed the photos. I have more to post tomorrow.

They were taken at sunrise. I'm almost always up around sunrise on vacation and I love walking around before heading to the gym. It's so peaceful and tranquil. Unlike the path to/from FW and WL, there are lights that illuminate the pathway so you won't need a headlamp. The gym is open 24/7 with your MB/KTTW Card. I used it everyday and it was rarely crowded. Once all the treadmills were taken so I just got on an elliptical until someone was done. It's sorely lacking in weight equipment and has no bathrooms or fans though, (more on the gym tomorrow when I post photos).

Here is the path just after sunrise:

There were scheduled closures of the Express monorail on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. This was supposed to end last month, but it may have been extended. There were also closures due to maintenance issues and weather. I think lightning hit it at least once during our stay. One day there were many cars taken out of service on one monorail. We were told the AC wasn't working in those cars so they closed them. They also were preventing some cars from being occupied with MK passengers. We were told they were holding the car open for CR passengers so no one could get on at MK. You know there's a problem when they have to do that. We were in some long lines at CR in the evening.

You're correct about the Maine lobster and also about it being overcooked/steamed.

That is just wrong, but I completely understand why you do it. Bottom line, they need more buses and more fully operating monorails to accommodate more and more park and resort guests. They had record attendance numbers last year at WDW Resorts/Parks and their transpiration options need to keep up with that.

Thank you:)

That is so ironic! I even used the same TA deal. Were you not able to switch to GF? I have to say though that we got the exact room I requested at Poly and we loved it - the room that is. This was our third try with Poly and I think it's out of DD's system now. Also ironic is the fact that I let DD choose any resort and she chose Poly. Then she kind of un-chose the Poly and chose GF instead. Kids.

Happy (early) birthday to your DD. Mine turns 17 about a month after yours. Did I just write that???

Thanks for the additional info on the monorail! It's really starting to make me nervous for our pre-park opening ADRs and if I should plan on alternate transportation options already (like Uber), or if I should stay calm and see what it's like in November! It's frustrating when they sell something as a 'perk' when it really causes more stress t plan around it not being available.

Thanks for all the info about your stay and the pics!!!

:rotfl2:
We are very eager to try RPC. I've only read glowing reviews, which makes me a bit skeptical. Even with a nearly perfect CL, you still have the occasional not-so-great guest factor. Have you found this to be an issue at RPC? Just curious since I've witnessed some pretty appalling behavior at other CLs and some CLs will enforce the rules and others choose to ignore the behavior, and my RPC questions are for everyone:)

More photos are on the way!

Thank you so much @Music City Mama, I really appreciate your kind comments. I look forward to reading your GF review! Where will you be eating on Thanksgiving Day?

I have had many RPC stays and have never seen truly bad behavior, I have seen some questionable attire though :rolleyes1, but for the most part quests are well behaved. The CM's are top notch, but as with anywhere it takes time for them to get to know you. I have seen an occasional bad review, it's not for everyone, but I think some people go in with unrealistic expectations. The food offerings are way above other CL's...and they have champagne!.. for the purists it is sparkling wine, but close enough for me. :thumbsup2 What truly sets it apart is the lounge. It is so nice to sit in the lounge in the evening drinking champagne and listening to the music from the lobby. We're old, DH has bad knees, it's too much work to get to the MK at night now...so if we don't have a dinner ADR somewhere we just sit in the lounge and enjoy the music. On several occasions we have run into the same guests...is it bad when someone comes up to you and asks "were you here last October" hmmm does that mean we're there too often? :rotfl2: We met Dispro and her DH in the lounge during the super bowl last year and watched again with them this year. :goodvibes

Music City Mama, Enjoy your first GF stay.

ohhhhhh, kook, the irony was not wasted on me! i was definitely clenching my teeth a bit reading your post! VERY happy for you but feeling like we definitely got the "non-preferential" treatment! it was a very long story. the kids and i had spent a few days at the beach and then drove to orlando, and dh and my father had flown down. dh and my dad arrived at the poly before us and when dh saw our view, which was overlooking a pit of despair aka the pool construction, he went downstairs immediately to ask to move rooms. as soon as he texted me, i knew the view had to be more than horrendous, as dh NEVER complains about anything, let alone would he ever be the guy to request a move. they said there was no other room in all of hawaii to move to. dh he asked to move to GF. this is when i knew the situation must REALLY be bad because we had two other parties staying the week with us at the poly for my birthday (neither had arrived yet), and dh would have never "abandoned ship" if it were not terrible. anyway, they told him that there were no CL rooms available at all (SL or RPC). they also told him that CR CL was full. he was told that there was absolutely nothing they could do. dh was persistent and a leader arrived and told dh we could move the next day to a room on the other side of the building. that was very inconvenient with having to check out and not have access to our things most of the next day, but we assumed it would be well worth it. well, the view over there was only marginally better, as they were doing exterior construction directly on our patio. here is a link to the photos i posted of the views, on another thread:

http://www.disboards.com/threads/we...l-information-and-help-thread.3414590/page-89

my pics are on post #1768.

so that was a very long answer to your question; no, according to the poly CL staff, we could not move to the GF. we took their offer to move us to the lagoon side, assuming that would end the problem. then when we got there and saw all the lagoon side construction, they assured us it was "roving" and would be out of the way later that day (that wasn't true, it was there all week, minus the weekend). if we had known how it was all going to end up, we would have just gone directly to GF or CR ourselves but we kept believing the poly that things would improve and eventually we were just too far into our vacation, and too unpacked, to spend any more of our time on it.

Thanks to you both. We are starting to feel a bit better. And we are that much closer to my stay. I CANNOT wait. The next 2 weeks will be insane but nothing we can do about that.

Hope that time flies..nothing like a WDW trip..and especially with a stay at the GF to help you feel better and rest up! :goodvibes

I hope the next two weeks don't go by too fast! My DD16 will become DD17 on September 15th, and I want her to be 16 as long as possible...even though she's been saying she's 17 all summer, LOL! I can't wait to get back to GF so that things can be like they used to be...the DDs become princesses again and even the older DD likes spending time with the family...gotta love Disney for keeping everyone young (including parents)!

What a wonderful sentiment...and so true...:goodvibes

A club level story:

So, dd and i were coming back from the park one night and she decides she wants a strawberry daiquiri to bring to the lounge while we have desserts. She stopped at the courtyard pool bar and they said "sorry, we are closing up but try the beach pool bar". She walks to the beach bar and calls me from there and says "no daiquiri this late:sad:!!!

At that time i was chatting with a cm in the lounge so I ask" where can dd get a daiquiri?" He said "to go to Mizners." So 10 minutes later dd walks in empty handed. He asks her "where is your daiquiri???"

She says" i tried both pool bars, mizners and even Citrico's but no one had any.":(

So he calls narcoossee's and they said they had it. So off she goes AGAIN!!! When she got back he asked her a few questions( i was sitting with my desserts, lol). She comes over to the table and tells me he credited our account for the drink:drinking1:thumbsup2

People wonder why us regulars keep going back, thats why!!!!

Trish Loved when you shared that story with me when you were on your trip ::yes::...and am so happy that you shared it here too...GF really is a very special place! :wizard:

kook, thanks for your review and looking forward to more of your great pics. At one time the resort monorail was only for resort guests...ahhh those were the days. The monorail is not a perk anymore. :sad2:Getting to and from the MK is now easier from any other area. We get a rental car and drive everywhere now, we would drive to the MK if it was an option. Sorry about your room noise...we have never experienced it, I don't think that is typical.
Your DD has good taste, RPC would make a wonderful graduation trip. One word of warning...once you stay RPC it is hard to go back...it is above and beyond any Disney CL.

I agree..!! As for the transportation...I think that based on the time of year..we plan our travel time differently with all of the recent monorail issues..and find that we use the water launches more..even if they are not always the most direct route...:boat:

You quoted Maxie, but I thought I'd pipe in...LOL. I've only stayed 2 others CLs besides RPC so I don't have much to compare it to, but unfortunately, RPC is not exempt from the not-so-good behavior that is seen in other CLs :(. I have witnessed the barefoot guest in the lounge, people laying all over the couches with their shoes on, kids reaching over the table/other foods trying to get a certain food item with their hands, etc. and the CMs not confronting them about it. With that said, even though you do pay a hefty price to stay RPC, it really is an amazing experience overall! The CL CMs are very friendly and are always willing to help when needed. I actually rank WL CL up at the top with RPC (that's how much I love WL CL, which I know is also a favorite of yours ;)).

...:faint:.......Not properly dressed guests probably what we have seen most of...and of course the occasional person who thinks that the lounge is their own personal living room....lol..yep sprawled out on the sofas..I think that might be one of the reasons that they are no longer there....I have seen the lounge staff politely address children who are taking food with their hands instead of using the proper utensils....but overall..our lounge experiences in RPC have been very nice....:thumbsup2

:rotfl2:

Music City Mama, Enjoy your first GF stay.

Lol..I just said the same thing when responding to MickeyNut's post...I think I might have seen a pic or two...:cool2: of those not properly clad peeps in the lounge....:rotfl:....????? Also..arent't you forgetting some other people that you regularly spend time with in the lounge....???? huh...:earsgirl: ....and I certainly don't think its a bad thing when someone recognizes you from previous trips...It simply means that you are like minded...lol..Disney..especially GF fans are the best....:thumbsup2 So happy that we have gotten to know Dispro during the last few trips! The more GF friends the merrier!

Kook I share Maxie's sentiments too about the general ambiance of the lounge in RPC....if you really plan to spend a lot of lounge/resort time...there is not a nicer place to do it....:cloud9: :lovestruc.... not only is the music enchanting...the surroundings welcoming, airy and bright ( especially the carpet...lol.....:rainbow:) ..and oh so spacious..the CMs are so very attentive and friendly...it just adds so much to the overall experience....and most of the other guests..young and old seem be under the same relaxing spell..and just enjoying the vibe...I know that you will have a Grand stay! Also...truly enjoyed your trip review and pics too...thanks so much for sharing! :goodvibes

Hope that you all have an enjoyable long weekend....:earsgirl: preppy GF gal..who cannot wait to get back to my happy place! :thumbsup2[/QUOTE]

Thank you so much @Music City Mama, I really appreciate your kind comments. I look forward to reading your GF review! Where will you be eating on Thanksgiving Day?

When I initially made our Thanksgiving ADR, I made it for WCC, but then changed it to Trail's End. When we found out we were moving to GF, I considered changing it to GFC, but ultimately decided not to because we'll get to dine at GFC on some other days. I figured that sticking with Trail's End, even though I hate paying adult prices on a buffet (especially one with a holiday surcharge!) for the small appetite 12 year old, it would give us an opportunity to stop into WL on the way there and see just how impacted we may or may not have been by the construction and of course, see the tree!

Oh, on another note, I would love to hear how the extra FPs worked out for you and your DD and what your strategy was with them (i.e., use early in the day, late, just whenever). We have them, too, and I'm hoping we won't run into any snags using them.

Let's start the day out right by going to the "gym" :rolleyes2. It's located next to the spa and across from VGF. You'll need your MB or KTTW Card to enter, 24/7.

There wasn't even any hand sanitizer, only wipes. There aren't any fans either, not even some ceiling fans so it gets very hot when you're doing cardio.

I know the gym used to be bigger before they rehabbed the spa. I feel it's too small, especially considering it supports two resorts and two DVC villas. I'm surprised it's even up to code seeing that it has no bathroom or hand washing facilities.

Glad you had a great stay at the GF! I think RPC for DD's graduation is a great idea. The GF is amazing no matter which room category you have, but RPC is just amazing! :wizard:

I've been back and forth about trying CG, but maybe we need to just bite the bullet and try it. My DH and youngest DS always get filet when we go out at home and we love Yachtsman, so if CG is just as great, it may be worth a try ;).

Thanks for Sanaa pics! No worries about being OT, we love all kinds of reviews/pics :goodvibes.

I couldn't agree more about KOOK and her reviews/pics :thumbsup2.

You quoted Maxie, but I thought I'd pipe in...LOL. If they are running and you're going to MK, my advice is to ALWAYS TAKE THE BOAT, unless it's an off time of day like late morning to early afternoon. If you can walk to TTC, I'd catch the Epcot monorail from there. It just seems like a more productive use of your time since by walking, you're actually getting somewhere and it isn't crowded and, you can always stop for a Dole Whip on the way;)

Sitting in the RPC lounge, enjoying the offerings and listening to the wonderful band and pianist sounds perfect.

Oh, no! You need a do-over and FAST! DH might not want to come back after that, and who could blame him? My head is shaking back and forth. So sorry about how they handled your asking to move. I just can't believe every single alternative was booked, no way. Well, you have to make up for this - start booking something now so you'll start to forget::yes::

We love TE. We ate there on Christmas Day after horseback riding and before eating dinner at CA Grill. It's a really hospitable atmosphere, (we just love Josephine the greeter/seater), and the food is tasty.

Eating on holidays now at WDW isn't as much fun as it used to be what with all the extra additional overcharges, not being able to use discounts such as TiW and fixed menus. But, you're at WDW and that's still great.

@WDWKOOK I love your honest reviews and feedback.
Oh, thank you! Everyone might not share my opinion (or even care about it) but, it is honest and I try not to leave out details.

Lovin' the pics, WDWKOOK! Thanks!

Thank you, @Lisann…Believe it or not, I have more!

Awesome pics KOOK love the view, You are making me homesick. 12 more days and I will be home, can't wait. :woohoo: Well actually 13 til we check into the Grand, first night we are staying a POFQ since we are getting in late ish. I love that the coffee maker is on it's own table and not in the bathroom area...not that we use it, but I don't like it there. I usually move it somewhere so it's not in the way.

You'll be there soon! And, because you're staying onsite first, you can get to GF lickety-split. You can check-in as early as 0600;)

DD actually set up the coffee maker using the table that's underneath the desk. We thought it was a better use of space rather than leaving it near the TV and we weren't ordering room service so we didn't need the table.

I love the photos, KOOK. You had a beautiful view from your room. :cloud9:

Thank you and not only was the view beautiful, but you could hear the MK audio so well. There is music playing prior to park opening and throughout the day that you can hear very clearly from TPV. And, of course you could hear all the boat horns and my beloved train.

Thanks for the info (and pics) on the gym. I agree about the size, it looks very small :(.

@WDWKOOK I love your honest reviews and feedback.

Me too :goodvibes.

Love the pics, thanks for sharing them! I never get tired of looking at pics of the GF :cloud9:.

Thank you, @mickeynut1. You and I have witnessed some of the same behavior:rolleyes2. No CL is immune to poor behavior, but it would make it more tolerable for other guests if more CL staff confronted guests behaving badly.

You're welcome :).

I agree. If more CL CMs would confront those with bad behavior, it would make for a more tolerable atmosphere overall ;).

Kook has inspired me to change to GF this December. Well I blame her but it's all me. I can't wait to finally come home to the Grand!
Good one! Yes, I'll take all the blame! Tell DH it was all my fault. Hey, now I have to use my magical erasing quill to take you off the BoardWalk Bulletin:badpc:

I think this calls for some Sugar Loaf photos…well, all I have is the building and sign:upsidedow

Hi pas :goodvibes. Congrats on the change to the GF! LOL on blaming KOOK for the change :rotfl::rotfl:.....she did a great review and had some awesome pics ::yes::. You will be at the Grand before you know it! :wizard:
