Disneys Grand Floridian Resort & Spa was opened in the summer of 1988 as the Grand Floridian Beach Resort; the name was changed in fall 1997 after the spa and health club were added. Walt Disney World's fifth resort hotel and considered their flagship resort for its opulent public spaces and outstanding service, the Grand Floridian is a AAA Four Diamond hotel. With six full service restaurants (including award-winning Victoria & Albert's) and one quick service location, it has the most dining options of any WDW resort, and standard rooms are among the largest on property.

Inspiration for the resort came from the grand old hotels built along the Florida coast during the early 20th century by railroad magnates Henry Flagler & Henry Plant. The outer buildings are named for islands in the Florida Keys, and the quick service restaurant and arcade is whimsically called Gasparilla Island Grill, a nod to the famed Florida buccaneer, Jose Gaspar, in whose honor the city of Tampa holds an annual festival.

The Grand is a deluxe resort situated on 40 acres along the white sand beaches of Seven Seas Lagoon southwest of the MK, with 867 rooms distributed among 6 buildings. The beautiful white buildings feature red gabled roofs, wide verandas, intricate gingerbread trim and a five-story Grand Lobby, with an Art Nouveau stained glass ceiling, Italian marble floors and enormous white chandeliers.

Themed as turn-of-the-century Victorian Florida, the Grand was reportedly designed using influences from the Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, NH, Hotel del Coronado in San Diego, CA and the Belleview-Biltmore Hotel in Belleair, FL. The atmosphere is elegant and refined, but not overbearing - it's Disney, after all! Children are welcome here, and there are plenty of activities for all ages.

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa has been designated by the Florida Green Lodging Program, recognizing the Resort's environmentally responsible practices.

The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is a smoke-free resort; smoking is permitted only in designated outdoor locations.

Construction began along the shores of Seven Seas Lagoon near the Wedding Pavilion in mid-2011, and Disney confirmed The Villas at Disney's Grand Floridian in early December, 2011, with an expected 147 units. Sales for existing DVC members began on May 23, 2013 and for the general public on June 19, 2013. Grand Opening is planned for October, 2013!

Important Announcement Regarding Monorail Service in 2014 per the WDW website

As part of our continuing efforts to exceed the expectations of our Guests, select monorail services will not be available in the early morning and late evening from June 22 through the end of Summer 2014.

Please note the following monorail schedule changes:

see update below

During this time, watercraft and motor coach options will still be available to help transport you to your destination. In addition, all monorail services will offer standard operating hours on the weekend of July 4, 2014.

As of 9/27/14: The monorail will have a different operating schedule than normal as an automation upgrade takes place. An automated monorail will allow for faster switching times, more frequent dispatching of trains, and accurate arrival information.

Additional buses and watercraft will be available during this time (guests who have early breakfast reservations can also use watercraft or bus service). This schedule will be in place for a few months, but no specific end date has been set. The schedule will be:

Epcot - 8:00am-11:00pm or 1 hour after the Magic Kingdom closes (whichever time is earlier)
Resort monorail - 7:00am-1 hour after the Magic Kingdom closes
Express monorail - 8:30am-1 hour after the Magic Kingdom closes

**info from WDWKOOK regarding room requests:

...I asked a WL Room Assignor once about OCI room requests Vs. those that are called in or emailed to the IPO when staying CL. He assured me that ALL requests are seen by the Room Assignor. The way it works is that the reservation is dropped into the resort about a week prior to arrival. At about the 3-5 day mark, the Room Assignor assigns your room, taking into consideration the requests in your reservation. This is why all requests need to be in about a week prior to arrival.

Helpful hints: Brevity and specificity help and not having conflicting requests is a plus! Try to describe room features or locations or specific buildings instead of asking for specific room numbers. If the specific room number isn't available, the RA won't know why you requested the room and will have a hard time finding a similar room.

Disclaimer: I have no experience with GF RAs, but I assume they all function the same way. Also, in my experience, some resorts do a much better job than others in trying to fulfill guests' requests.
Even if a reservation has been dropped into the resort's system, it doesn't mean the RA has actually assigned your room. I really can't tell you what would happen if your room's been assigned and you call after that to have your request amended/added. The room is usually assigned a few days prior to arrival so if you're outside that window, I say go ahead and call.

I always recommend to guests with requests that they ask at check-in if their request(s) were met. Describe your requests to the CM: "high floor," "corner room," "close to the marina" "no connecting door…" because often the CM doesn't see your requests, but they do know the room number, even if your room isn't available yet. They have a (proprietary) room map they can look at to see if your room matches your type/location request. You may have to wait longer for the room or they may have to get a manager, but they may be able to fulfill your request upon check-in or even the next day, if you're willing to switch."

Here is a
link to photos of the new room decor.

Standard guest rooms average about 448 square feet and have either two queen beds or one king bed, desk & chair with nesting table, arm chair, armoire with flat screen TV, ceiling fans, vanity area with 2 sinks, and bath. Most rooms offer day bed and nearly all have a private balcony. In the vanity area, H20 brand toiletries such as shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and shower cap are found and there is a retractable clothesline in the shower. A Cuisinart pod coffee maker is available in each room.

A typical room sleeps 5, but the deluxe garden view (formerly known as Lodge Tower - see layout below) and Queen Deluxe (main building) rooms sleep 4. ETA: after the summer, 2014 room renovations, the queen deluxe rooms in the Main Bldg. now have a queen sleeper sofa, stay tuned for an update regarding occupancy. Dormer or "attic" rooms at the Grand Floridian are in the upper floors under the gabled roofs. These rooms are slightly smaller than the Standard guest rooms but appear larger because of the vaulted ceilings, and have enclosed balconies. Dormer rooms should all have day beds now, so sleep 5.

Outer Buildings - Garden Deluxe Rooms (formerly Lodge Tower)

There are 26 one, two and three-bedroom suites available. Suites have two queen size beds, or one king size bed, and a separate parlor area with a wet bar. These rooms can sleep between 4 and 10 adults, depending on the suite type.

There are two room types within the Main Building/Deluxe/King category. These include the 6 turret rooms located in the towers of the main building, and the 9 second floor (Clarendon Level) honeymoon rooms. The second floor honeymoon rooms are approximately the same size as the standard rooms, have a Jacuzzi tub and a balcony with views of the MK, but no wet bar or walk-in closet. Turret rooms are larger than the 2nd floor rooms, but do not have the Jacuzzi tub or private balcony. Instead, you'll find a spectacular view with windows all the way around the suite, walk in closet and a garden tub.

TIP: You don't have to be on your honeymoon to enjoy a honeymoon suite, it's perfect for anniversary or second honeymoon trips too. Note that these rooms now accommodate 3 guests.

Rollaway beds are offered free of charge. Guests may request bed boards, bed rails, down pillows, heating pads, microwave oven (limited number available), extra pillows, blankets, towels, robes, International Electrical Adapters and foot stools. Call Housekeeping from your in-room phone to do so.

If there are more than 2 adults in the same room, there is an additional charge of $25 per person, per night.

A limited number of handicapped accessible rooms are available, and early booking is advised. In Sago Cay, there are 3 rooms, Sugar Loaf has 2, Big Pine Key has 2, there are some in Conch Key and there is at least one accessible room in the main building (some reports say 2). Some accessible rooms have roll in showers, others have tubs, so guests must describe their particular needs at booking to be assigned the correct room type.

**All rooms non-smoking.

BlueSkies alerted me to this new children's activity! She described it thusly: the "Princess Promenade"..which occurs daily at 3:30..with a meet up about 15 minutes prior at M.Mouse Mercantile....it's a procession down the Grand staircase and then waltzing in the lobby alongside Cinderella...sounds lovely... I agree, my friend! :lovestruc

Link to the DIS description page with a photo, attributed to another site:

The Grand Floridian Resort & Spa at Walt Disney World has added a special experience, the Princess Promenade, for their guests. Every day at 3:30, Cinderella and Prince Charming will descend the Grand staircase and proceed to the lobby. They will dance together and guests are welcome to join in.

The event is billed as a “Grand Floridian Magical Moment” and says it is featuring “Disney Royalty,” so there is no guarantee which royal couple will be there each day.
