2013 Marching Band Thread

We had a soggy day at BOA. No rain while we performed, but it poured shortly thereafter. All the bands that stayed through the delay got to at least march one time, but finals were cancelled. We came in first though so all in all it was worth being soggy. :) There is still some room for improvement in our show, but visually, it is just beautiful. I can't wait until it is complete and fully polished.

I know our band has pulled out of games/parades at the last minute due to rain. The old band director insisted that it wasn't worth ruining the instruments by letting them get wet. Since I'm a guard mom I don't know much about the care of the instruments, but I think it's bad form to pull out of something at the last minute unless their is a safety reason (lightening, etc.)

It didn't take long for the negative press to hit social media, and the fact that we won 63-6 was completely overshadowed by the disrespect of our band bailing when no one else did. How was it safe for everyone else, except for the band??

Something like this would barely be a blip on the radar here. I'm sure our band has left a game early due to rain at least twice in the past six years. I never heard anything about it in the media. :confused3

Six of our band kids got in a bad car accident before the homecoming dance on Saturday :sad2: They were being wreckless while driving and one car ended up t-boning another car - both cars are totalled but thankfully all of the kids are okay :lovestruc it was the weirdest thing because these are all good kids, not who you would expect to be making bad decisions but teenagers will be teenagers I suppose :confused3 They all went to the dance but I haven't heard from DBF how they are doing today.

Rain is terrible on the instruments. In college, the band usually stays out because they're using an old beater for marching purposes and not their good instrument. These are usually very good musicians that are good enough to need a near pro model for concert. But most high schools and high school parents don't have the money for an old beater to use for marching or what will become their old beater if they move on is their primary instrument. It is also very hard on the uniforms.

When you kick someone's butts 63-6, they really have nothing to say regarding the game. So they turn to well you weren't classy.

Same here. Our band has done it over the last couple of years when there has been serious rain, and no one said a word.

Were you at BOA Austin, by chance? Man we got SOAKED. I felt so bad for the band that was ready to take the field but had to turn around. They never made it back because everything was drenched. I've seen their show and it's a good one, so I'm sad they never got to perform.

Have you guys seen this video? It's a local band from their half-time show on Friday. I was just glad that none of the kids was hurt. I was also very impressed that they all just got right back up and resumed the show. The video has gone viral and even aired on HLN this morning. Normally I wouldn't share this but I heard from one of the parents that the boys are taking this in stride and are enjoying their YouTube celebrity status.

Either everybody leaves, or nobody leaves... it's incredibly bad form for just one band to not come back off the buses, when it has stopped raining and everyone else resumes the game. Every comment on the high school football message boards has said the same thing, so maybe it's just a regional thing... but you just don't bail like that. This is our 4th year at this rodeo -- I know all about the dangers of rain and instruments. Like I said, they could have just sat there and cheered the team on, sang the fight song, stayed committed and had fun -- along with everybody else there. This was just a horrible lesson to teach the kids, and from as much flak as they're getting from parents, I think they'll coordinate better next time with the other directors and coaches before going rogue.

Anyways, good luck to everyone who has competitions upcoming this week and weekend!! :cheer2:

That is SO scary... I'm so glad they're all okay, but man, just reading that makes me want to cut DS's license up into itty bitty pieces and drive him everywhere myself. :-(

I saw this video on GMA this morning. (I didn't open your link, but am assuming it is the sousaphone players?). They went down like dominos. Ouch!!

That video is awful! DH saw two sousaphones collide and fall down at competition this past Saturday. I only saw them getting up. The fear when backwards marching.

I would be happy if the kids didn't have to march in the rain! Ours always do! That said, we had a nasty storm roll through her 2 weeks ago. They delayed the game and everyone went inside. They did send the cheerleaders and band home and we thought the game was cancelled....however they played after a 2 hour rain delay. We lost. Of all the games in area only 2 played that night, the rest all played the next day.

Here's videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HqBzrfi8qI&feature=youtu.beof our band from Saturday. Pembo boy solos are at 1:05 and 3:40. Shameless mom brag...:) Our video guy also works part time for the Indians - he'll be running the centerfield camera at the playoff games.

Yes, it was BOA Austin. We performed shortly before the downpour thank goodness. It is always awful to have the day end up the way it did for that school. I thought they were going to return, but I guess it just wasn't in the cards for them. I am glad that the last round of rain skirted us so that everyone else got to perform though.

We know the band from the clip well. I know several alumni and current members. I am glad they are taking it with such good humor. We actually had a very similar pile up ourselves a few weeks ago, although not tubas. The video of ours was removed from the internet pretty quickly though. That backwards marching can be tricky.

As for leaving the game, I have mixed feelings about it. We did leave a game a few weeks ago when halftime was cancelled, but it was a weeknight game. I don't know that I would be ok with that on a Saturday game. We also elected not to march due to weather for one halftime show and the other team did march. Our band did stay and cheer though.

Wow Pembo, I can't imagine having a band that large. We are so small. And great solos! :) They are amazing to watch.

Good news for us. Our guard now has a new guard coach who actually knows what he's doing!!!!! He is a friend of the band director and he let them know how poorly he thought they did during the competition. Said it was time for them to perfect an easier routine. Well tonight they had their first guard practice with him and DD is soooo excited! She has had her single and double with the rifle but only threw a triple once, and it was messy. Well by the end of tonight he has her throwing clean triples with confidence. Said he's really going to work with them to get the flag work clean. Also told them that by the end of the indoor season, he expects the rifle line (DD and two others) to be able to throw quads, if not 5's. And then, just to prove he knew what he was going, he effortlessly threw an 8 with a spin for good measure. :woohoo::yay::dance3::banana: I'm glad they have the dance coach for that aspect, but so glad they finally have someone who's really good at guard and knows how to teach them the correct way to do things. Once again DD is stoked for the season.

Can't believe our next competition is states. Personally I think they're crazy going with only one competition under their belts. Then nationals. Maybe one or two shows (not competitions) in between. I think they've bitten off more than they can chew but time will tell. I'll be happy with anything other than last place. :thumbsup2

Its Friday! What are the Band Mom's doing this weekend???

Home football game tonight! Tonight 8th Grade plays in the Band Stand with HS band! That means DS13 is on Tenor Drums! He will have a blast, especially since he knows a lot of the older kids! DH and I work concessions after Half Time.

I watched the end of rehearsal last night and they finally have nearly 8 minutes on the field! And I got goosebumps three times watching! I think its finally coming together and I'm super excited to see it again!

We have a contest at Broken Arrow tomorrow. Only 15 schools, so its starting later, which is awesome! We don't march until 3 or 3:30...I better look that up.
DS18 is driving over from his University to watch and hang with the Tuba Section. Should be a fun weekend!

Good luck to all Marching this weekend!
Go Band!

How fun! And that's awesome that they let you work just one half of the game. I would never be willing to miss football, though -- that's why I wash uniforms. ::yes::

Don't you just love that goosebump-y feeling?? :goodvibes Tonight's game is the first time we'll get to see the whole show, and I can't wait! DS said that today is also the day they were going to find out the show's storyline. WHY that has been some big secret up until now, I have just no idea. :confused3

Good luck tomorrow!! Is the Broken Arrow band as phenomenal as it has always been?

Its Friday! What are the Band Mom's doing this weekend???

Tonight we have a home game (homecoming). Tomorrow we have our first real BOA competition... and a lot of the bands that are going to be there are some of the best in the state. Should be interesting!! DS has to be at the school 4:15am. :faint: My friend & I need to leave at 8-ish to be there by their 10:15 performance time -- I haven't decided if I should try and go back to sleep for a little bit after my son leaves (and risk oversleeping, which would be bad!!) or just stay up and drink so much coffee that we have to stop and pee every mile, lol.

You'd think my family would be used to this band stuff by now, but it seems not. My birthday's in a week, and my family's all upset because I have no weekend until maybe November when I can celebrate. I told them I'll have a birthday next year, after he graduates! I mean, as long as I don't get to celebrate birthdays, I don't get any older, right?? Isn't that how it works? :thumbsup2

Good luck to anyone else competing this weekend!! :cheer2:

so random question. If you chaperone for a game, you get in free naturally, but does the rest of your family?

And how much does it cost for your football games?

Ours seems a bit high. Just curious.

It's $5 for parking
$7 for 6th grade & up
$2 for younger. No other student rates.

My nephews school has season passes you can buy & discounts for students & no parking fee.

Of course we want the parking fee cause all that $ goes to the band.

Only chaperones and those that tote the equipment get in free here. Family has to pay. $8 is the admission fee and there is no charge for parking.

Oh my gosh! Thank god no one was hurt.

Enjoying all the video of the bands posted. :thumbsup2

If you buy your tickets in advance they are $6 and $4. If you buy them at the gate they are $8 and $6. You can buy season tickets which are about $12 a game and you get reserved seating. The only way to buy a parking pass is to buy season tickets. I think the parking pass costs $70. A lot of bands families get season tickets so they can sit together and can purchase the parking pass.

Chaperones and pit crew get in free, but everyone else had to pay.

No parking fee at any of the games I've gone to. We dont have chaperones at home games. If you are working cosessions you get in free, but have to pay for any family members not working. At away games and contests, only chaperones that rode the bus get in free. Our home games are $8 for adults, $6 for students, I think.

$7 per person to get in gate here. No parking fees. No parent chaperones but we get in free if we go to back gate, see the right person, and get a pass when we work concessions. Of that $7 gate fee much of it goes to the state for insurance and fees. Team doesn't get much of it.
