Well, I'm making the same New Year's resolution...again!
My resolution this year is to simply get rid of stuff, either by hauling it to Goodwill or throwing it in the trash can. Every year, I make the same excuse: I'll put it in a yard sale. I live in a dead end neighborhood, and few very people ever come to yard sales here. At this point, it's simply not worth the few hundred dollars that I could make from selling stuff. I just want it gone, and I want my house to feel more calming. I want that calm and relaxed feeling that I get when I walk into a nice hotel room. I've tried organizing my stuff into storage bins, but the simple fact is, I just have too much stuff that I don't need. Like the guy on the TV show said (Peter Something-or-other), "YOU CAN'T ORGANIZE CLUTTER!"
Even though the main part of my house looks decent, the clutter elsewhere in the house (spare bedroom, basement, garage, closets, cabinets) is becoming a big source of stress between DH and I. I'd say that 90% of the disagreements we have are related to this.
I've made a couple of small dents recently. Right before Christmas, I gathered up a huge box of DD's outgrown toys and sold them for $40. The toys that didn't sell are going to Goodwill this weekend. I went through a 3 foot high stack of magazines, and tossed almost all of them. (We don't have recycling here.) I shredded 2 years of bill statements, and semi-organized my filing cabinet. I gathered up 2 big bags of clothes from Kohl's (never worn, too small now, tags on, had the receipts) and returned them to the store. I love their awesome return policy.
The next 4 weeks are going to be super busy for me, and I'm sure I'll get rid of lots of stuff. We are having our entire house flooring redone with hardwood, so I have to pack up (or get rid of) knick knacks, stuff hanging on the walls, storage boxes under the bed, everything on the floors of the closets, etc. The flooring guys will move furniture, but all of the little stuff needs to be packed up and out of their way. The downstairs is scheduled to be done in 2 weeks, and the upstairs is getting done 2 weeks after that. I'm sure that by having to move and/or pack up so many items from my house, I'll be parting with a lot of it.
