2013 Destash- this is the year!

Woke up a little while ago and my husband has caught the decluttering bug! He cleaned the fridge and is now reorganizing the pantry and cabinets.

I shared this last year but I figured I'd do it here since we have a lot of new faces.
When purging the kids toys I came across an idea on Pinterest for showcasing toy cars. I used an 8x8 shadowbox for the kids cars and they could only keep what fit in one box. It made them really really selective and they chose wisely. I made one for each of the boys and DD has about 1/2 of one full.
The end result was 3 shadowboxes up on their shelves and probably 50+ cars donated to Goodwill.

Not so much a destash, but I got all of the Christmas decorations down and put back in the loft. DH is going to help me get the tree out of the stand this afternoon and once the stand is put away, we will be Christmas free for another 11 months!! WOOHOO!

DH has decided January will be focused on his books and my focus is mostly going to be on my craft room. I converted the dining room into a craft room last year but it's become the catch all room. I need to remove the stuff that doesn't belong and pare my scrapbook supplies down to 1/2 so I can have room for my cross stitch stuff which has been relegated to the basement.

I am in.

My goals for January is to wipe out all of the cupboards in the kitchen and review contents. I also need to rework my home office and make it somewhere where I actually want to work again.

There are other areas that could use attention, but I will focus on these two areas first.

I was able to get my dresser and the coat closet done yesterday. Today I am going to go thru books/cd's and take to a second hand store to sell. Even if i only get $10 it is better then them just sitting there collecting dust. DH posted his bow on Craigslist today as he hasn't touched it in 2 years. If he sells it that will be another $300 to add to our WDW vacation fund and something out of our closet. :thumbsup2

I'm in!!!! took my house off the market for the Holidays will relist again in early March, today I tackled the linen closet :cool1: I really need to go thru our closets again :crazy2:
great thread :wave2:

I work in education, and our last day of school was December 21, so not a lot of time to get ready for Xmas. But, the counterpoint to that is we don't go back until the 7th!!!

My parents came over for the New Years bowl games and I told my mom I wouldn't be watching the games, but decluttering (she lives in town, so not like we don't see them alot)

Ds took 1 1/2 car loads to the Salvation Army today! And I'm still on a roll...I play to keep decluttering, at least some every day, until I go back on Monday.

Then, my goal is to try and follow FLYLady, because if I could keep up with it, I wouldn't need this big event!!!

Good Luck to everyone.

The key with FlyLady, I've found, is to make it YOUR routines and YOUR day, not hers. I tried too hard to be Ms. Perfect FlyLady and wound up falling off the FlyWagon faster than it took to dress to shoes in the morning!

Ironically, all Flylady did for me was ADD clutter to my inbox. Plus, it seems geared toward women whose full time job is keeping the house clean. If that were the case, I wouldn't need her help!

I went through the closet and 6-drawer dresser in our front hallway today. Not the biggest room in the house, but did I ever clear a lot. I had forgotten the closet floor is tiled. :rotfl:

2 bike helmuts that don't fit the kids anymore (what do I do with these?)
1 pair of ice skates - will freecycle
2 pairs of rollerblades - freecycle
2 pairs of water "slippers" to throw out (love my Keens! So glad DIS told me about them)
1 pair of boots - garbage
about 5 pairs of shoes - garbage
big pile of hats, mitts and scarves that no longer fit people - donate or freecycle
1 girl's snowsuit - either sell or freecycle
1 boy's snowsuit - ripped badly, garbage
1 boy's coat - freecycle
1 men's coat - ripped badly, garbage
1 ladies coat - freecycle
2 snowpants - ripped badly, garbage

And lots of reusable bags that ended up on the floor, never used. Those my cousin's daughter can use to bring home all the christmas stuff she received while staying at our place.

More destashing will have to wait until the kids are back in school, but I feel good about the hallway now! :thumbsup2

Same here. I wish she had a version for the working woman.

Today's accomplishments:
1 large bag for donate
1 box of paper recycling
1 blue bag of plastic recycling
1 garbage bag
brought up a futon frame to get rid of
brought up a crib to get rid of.

slowly but surely I am getting there
My reward will be a clean house and a sewing room. I realized today that I have never had a room that was just mine. Growing up I shared a bedroom, then a dorm room. Got married and share my bedroom with DH. I just may buy a locking doorknob for my sewing room LOL.

Phew! Went through my old hanging closet and have about 75 pairs of pants and skirts to give away. Then I found about 30 tops to also give away. I have to bag them but I'm taking a break.

I went through all of the drawers in my kitchen. I got rid of a ton of trash.

I also cleaned out my older DS drawers and closet. I will have to go through his summer stuff as spring arrives to see what still fits, but that won't take long. I have a bunch of stuff to donate/sell and threw some stuff out. His room overall is now in good shape.

My younger DS put all of his random legos that he just built with away in a bin, then we moved all of the new lego sets that have been built onto the lego table. Now he has all of the sets together and they are off my dining room table!

I made an appt for next week for the consignment shop, so I will be taking a load of stuff. Then will drop the rest at goodwill afterwards.

My trash/recycle cans are full with 2 extra bags so far and they don't pick up until Saturday this week because of the holiday. :woohoo:

I went through 2 bathroom cabinets and the linen closet today. 2 small bags of garbage, 1 box to donate or sell, an unopened curling iron to sell on ebay, and a set of new sheets for my sons bed. I can't decide if I should just donate things or have a garage sale this summer. I'm leaning towards just donating. I like the idea above to tally how much I throw out, donate, etc.

Spent several hours working on a business plan for the family farm that I'm taking over but I did manage to get a box full of books ready to donate to the local library and some that I want to try and sell on a local facebook auction site. Now I just have to take them from the kitchen to the car and to the library!!

I told my son's gf that I would have a few books to donate to the book drive she's participating in. After going through a bookshelf in my youngest boys' room, my personal bookshelf and asking DD we had 75 books to donate! She's going to be thrilled, the person who donates the most books gets to go with them to drop them off at the children's home and she really wants to do that.

Went through the board games and puzzles tonight.

Got rid of:
1 yahtzee game (will go the school for the basket raffle)
3 of the 6 monopoly games
2 of the 3 Memory games
1 puzzle

got rid of boxes for:
1 Munchkin game
1 memory game
1 yahtzee game

staged to sort:
2 Harry Potter clue games - need to see which is better
2 Scene it games - Kids need to decide if they want to keep them

Gained:
one shelf and the floor in front of the cabinet!!

Only a few more steps til I'm happy with the kitchen- for some reason I'm getting hung up on the quantity of baking pans, don't know why...I'm sure I've never had use for more than one 9 x 13 pan at a time, for example, but I hesitate to give the others up and don't know why.

Anyone have any good ideas about keeping the under the sink cabinets from being a disaster? I feel like I go through them often but they are a mess!

Planning on getting DH to go through old clothes this weekend. For not caring about clothes he is such a pack rat.
