2013 BOOK CHALLENGE! Are you in?

Book #3

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake

Review: On her birthday, Rose eats a slice of lemon butter and can sense the sadness and desperation of her mother's feelings. Since then she can taste the feelings of the cook making the dish. This makes things harder for her as years to come especially combined with the knowledge that only she knows her mother's transgressions and her brother's strange disappearances.

I thought it was an ok book. I think the author uses great descriptive language but I thought that she lost the grasp of the plot itself. It could have been written a little better with a clearer narrative but seemed vague. A lot of the story never really gets solved so...its ok but could have been so much better.

Hunger Games is still in progress but after going on a Sherlock Holmes kick (got the Game of Shadows dvd for Christmas along with being into the versions played by Jonny Lee Miller and Benedict Cumberbatch) is it worth reading the stories?

Lisa Jackson's books are considered romantic suspense. Just be careful --some of her older stuff is just romance novels -- I haven't read any of those.

Thanks! I will add her to my to try list. I just finished Suzanne brockmanns The Unsung Hero. Looks like there's quite a few books in that series so I am good for a few days lol. I read really really fast which can be good but also bad because then I struggle to fine my next set of books lol.

So far this year I read the two Cindy Gerard series I mentioned and finished Christy Reece too. She had three sets of intertwined trilogies that I really liked.

I read Lisa Jackson's Perfect Husband years ago when it first came out and was SO into her. I haven't read her lately, but she's goood.

I finished my Book #4, which was the Willy Wonka one mentioned on this thread (thank you to whoever did that!). It was really interesting.

I also started on a self-published book that got over 700 5-star reviews on amazon, thinking it would be great, but had to put it aside because of all the formatting, punctuation, and grammatical errors. It pulls me right out of the story. I'm thinking I need to stop looking at reviews or stick to traditional publishing, because it's terrible to pay for a book and not even be able to enjoy it because it's littered with errors.

Does anyone know how you can post a question in your group on Goodreads?

If you go to the DISReaders group, to the left of where it says "Discussion Board" there is in tiny tiny print "topics: all / new / unread"

Click on "new" and you can start a new thread. :thumbsup2

Wow some of you guys have really impressive goals! I need to start reading more. I was doing good over the summer/into the fall, but kind of fell off the bandwagon. Guess now is as good a time to jump in as ever! Sign me up for 13!

Welcome! :wizard:

I agree with you. I wish I could read more!! I have so many books that I want to read and it KILLS me that I don't have the time in 2013 to read them ALL!

Can I join the group? :wave2:

My goal for this year is 30. I just finished one and I'm about 25% through my second.

I'd like to join! I am in a book club, so I usually have 1 book to read a month. Then I squeeze in a book or 2 in between as well.
I will make my goal - 40

Some of my favorite books have been The Book Thief, The Thirteenth Tale, Hunger Games (mostly book 1), The Night Circus.
I would also recommend The Language of Flowers which I liked alot.
I have enjoyed some YA books: Hunger Games & Harry Potter series (which I read last year along w/my DS), Wonder

I recently read Defending Jacob which is good & great for discussions. Had a interesting convo w/DH about what we would do in this situation.

Next is Quiet. Which I have on hold at the library.
After that, I am reading Home Front, which is for my next month book club.
We also have A Reliable Wife & A Light Between Oceans coming up soon.

This thread has been great for getting book suggestions. I am always trying to find a good book to read.

Currently reading "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. I had no idea it was from 1932 when I bought my Kindle edition! Liking it very much.

I can't believe it took me ten days to finish my first book, but it's been crazy around here lately, and to my credit I did finish three books between Christmas and New Year's Day. OK, enough of making excuses.

I just finished As They See 'Em by Bruce Weber. It's a fan's (New York Times reporter's) travel in the land of baseball umpires. Weber spent three days at a professional umpire's school in Florida learning the ins and outs of umpiring professional baseball games, following the path of umpires from rookie league all the way up to World Series games. Lots of fascinating inside stories, explanations of little-known and/or misunderstood rules and just a really good read for baseball fans.

Starting today on A Sunless Sea by Anne Perry, my all-time favorite mystery author. Don't think it'll take me ten days to finish this one, as I tend to really tear through her books. I was going to start reading Killing Lincoln, but I kept hearing Anne Perry whispering "read me, read me!"

I had to read this book back in high school, and I loved it so much that I made my mom read it when I was done. I may have to think about going back and re-reading it. I hope you enjoy it!

Welcome! Always a pleasure to have fellow book lovers join in the fun! :wizard:

Can I join too?!?

I've read one so far and started my second this morning (big mistake as I got into it and was very nearly late for work!) I'm aiming to read at least 17. That's a trilogy which I'm on book 2 of right now, then a 14 part series called 'The Wheel of Time' by Robert Jordan :-)

Finished book #1 - 11/22/63

Fantastic book! It was very long, but I didn't want it to end....

That was a fantastic book! I recently read Killing Kennedy so it was neat reading that and having so much background already on Lee Harvey Oswald.

My goal is 40.

#4 The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach
From the reviews I read, I expected to love this book. I gave it 3 stars on good reads. The characters are not well developed there was so much more I wanted to know/understand about EVERY character - in the end I found it dismal.

So I then needed to read some fun chicklit "beach read" type book

#5 Bridesmaid Lotto
#6 Gamble on Engagement
#7 Wedding Wager
All by Rachel Astor. I loved the first one and dove into the next one and the I had to finish the series, right!

Ok, I'm in too. My goal will be 50. I have several books on hold at the library now based on recommendations from this thread. I have to wait til Sunday though to go pick them up since we are in the middle of a blizzard. It's the perfect time for reading and I have nothing LOL

Goal = 75
#4 77 Shadow Street Dean Koontz

The Pendleton is an apartment building that used to be a mansion. Strange happenings and deaths occur over its history. The book mixes horror and sci fi to explain why. It took too long to get to the point and the horror was overdone.

Goal: 50
#4 The Jane Austen Handbook
Margaret C Sullivan

I found this after watching a ton of Downton Abbey and this was a peek into the day to day life of that time period. This was a quick read and a lot of fun: giving peeks into things like how to behave at the first ball and how to throw a dinner party. Perfect for Austen fans, Downton Abbey fans time period wise and the just curious (like me).

4/5

Goal 72

#4 Wild/From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

This is a great book. Best I've read so far this year. (ok so it is only the fourth so far but still the best)
From the jacket: A powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an eleven hundred mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe, and built her back up again.
I would definitly recommend this book!
I normally don't read much non fiction but this book was #2 on the top 50 & #4 on the top 25 lists that I have been trying to read.
