2013 BOOK CHALLENGE! Are you in?

Ok just finished Cindy Gerard's Bodyguards Series. Read the Black Ops series last week. Very good for anybody that likes that genre. Does anybody have any romantic suspense recommendations? I prefer series books :)

Thanks :)

Linda Castillo, Not all her books are series, but alot of the later ones one. They have a great mystery that ends in a romace and are usally a quick read. I reccomend cops and lovers.

Cayroln haines writes suspense books with romace too. The sarah Booth series. I like these too, mostly quick reads. These have a very southern base.

Just finished #2 out of 30

Defending Jacob by William Landay

Five-star rating

This is one of those books that I will not soon forget. Its story gripped me from the start and will continue to haunt me.

Assistant District Attorney Andy Barber has just found out that the evidence in the murder of a 14-yo boy he's investigating is pointing towards his own 14-yr son, Jacob.

How far would you go in defending your own son? If your child is pleading that he's innocent, do you believe him? And if so, where is that inevitable line where that belief begins to blur?

I found myself as a parent questionning myself at every twist & turn in this book.... "What would *I* do if that were my child?"

Highly recommend to anyone who has not picked this book up yet! Enjoy!

Next up: #3 The Passage by Justin Cronan

#4 Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain just became availabe on Overdrive so I'll be reading books #3 and #4 simultaneously.

Defending Jacob is on my list to read. Thanks for the review. Sounds good!
I read The Passage last year and didn't care much for it altho it gets good reviews.

I had a similar response to this book. It actually had so much potential--the storyline did--but the main character was very "monochromatic" if that's such a description. She just never took off, never hooked me and, while I finished the book, I never loved any of the characters or got invested in it.

Well, the book jacket did say the author wrote the book ( Age of Miracles) before work each morning, lol. Maybe she just needed to spend more time on it.

Goal: 50

Book #3: Something Wikkid This Way Comes by Nicole Peeler - urban fantasy

Review: Capitola, Shar and Moo are three halfling (half human, half supernatural) women who own and operate a Supernatural Detective agency. They are hired by a human Priest to solve a mystery at the all girls school he runs. He is sure it is the work of Satan that has his students disappearing and defacing school property. Capitola and her friends go undercover in the school to solve this mystery.

While the book is a quick, easy read, I found it to be one dimensional. These characters were first introduced in The Jane True series, and I actually liked them better there. This book focuses on the mystery with small glimpses into the women's past. I found myself wanting more depth in their lives and relationship. I love the idea of an all girl supernatural detective agency, but I wanted to see more of why they are friends and how they got where they are. I guess I just wanted more from an author I enjoy. I hope that if she continues writing about this trio that she will add the depth I craved.

I"m glad to hear you loved Defending Jacob. Everyone one I know who read it, including myself, gave it top ratings.

I very much enjoyed Quiet. As a "social introvert" myself, this book was my cheerleader!!!

Finished boo #3 - On the Island.

I acutally really enjoyed it.

Now I'm going to read Rush Home Road and add Defending Jacob to my list.

Back on topic, I am currently on book #3, Stand by Me, by Neta Jackson.

Can I join? I'm going to go for 50. I mostly read YA books, because they are the best. Har.

So far, I've read:

Colleen Hoover's Hopeless (ok, I finished it around midnight of January 1, so I'm really cheating because I also counted it as a 2012 book. Cheating already? I stink.)

On the Island

Flat Out Love by Jessica Park

Now I am reading a book called Pushing the Limits, from Harlequin Teen.

Haven't read it, but it had great reviews. It's on my list!

Book #5 - "How To Eat a Cupcake" by Meg Donohue

Review - Annie and Julia grew up together. Annie's mother was nanny/housekeeper to Julia's society family. Through a series of events the girls are torn apart. 10 years later, fate throws them together as they work to open a cupcake bakery. They use the time to put the past behind them and resolve their differences.

This was standard chick lit. Very fast paced and engaging. I call them "fluff" reads since I don't really have to think to read them. I liked it. It kept my interest, and made me want to read more. Annie and Julia were both characters that I liked, and wanted to know more about. I would recommend this to anyone who likes "beach" reading!

Next up: " Lost and Found" by Carolyn Parkhurst

My list of books for 2013 keeps getting longer thanks to all the recommendations here! Deciding what to read next is hard....I have a variety of genres and I don't know what I'm in the mood for.

Guess I'll have to get 'free samples' on my Nook HD, start reading, and see what grabs my attention! I'm still down with the flu, so can't go to the library yet.

My husband's way of choosing books is interesting: when we're at the bookstore or library, he'll actually open the book somewhere in the middle, and read a few paragraphs to see if he likes it. I used to think this was weird, but I started doing it too. But unfortunately, the 'free samples' on Nook only allow you to read from the beginning.

#5 down - Gone Girl. Wow. Would love to have a discussion on that one with others that read it; don't want to spoil it for anyone, though.

OK, 2 down!

#1-"Crazy in Paradise"-it was just OK. The description made me think it was a cozy mystery, but there was no murder. I did, however, like all the quirky characters.
#2-"Some Kind of Wonderful" by Barbara Freethy. Typical Barbara Freethy, light romance. I find this kind of book really enjoyable. Don't ask me about plot development, how "deep" or "shallow" the characters were, it was just plain enjoyable to read.

Now reading "Murder in the Milk Case".

Me me me! Although some of the details are getting fuzzy in my brain, but the book as a whole will stick with me forever, whether I want it to or not, LOL!

I'm dying to discuss Defending Jacob!

Gosh, maybe we need a book club on here where all that have read a particular book can join in for discussion. :dance3:

Finished book 1/45 Fly Me to the Moon by Alyson Noel was really good... now to decide which book to read next... popcorn::
