It is our 7th trip with VA and have never had our hand luggage weighed before?
The check-in assistant wasn't the friendliest of people, plus two of us had cabin size suitcases. All 3 bags were weighed and a 'passed cabin baggage' label was fixed to each handle. With a bit of juggling around, we managed to get passed and then swapped it all back once we were airside
They could have just weighed all three and if the total was ok ,let you go through. It's not like the luggage handlers were going to do themselves an injury.
