2011 Super Goofs

Maura-Sorry about the rough run...great job finishing, though! I might have given up with those issues! I think the YakTracks would help with the loose snow. I have yet to try mine because most of the roads I run are have been pretty well plowed when I am running...but some of the side roads have that same loose snow...what a pain! It is worse than running in sand! Also, we are super excited to have you cheering for the Steelers!!!

Tracy-Welcome! You seem to have a very full running schedule this year! Thanks for the input on the YakTracks. As I told Maura, I still have not tried them, I might have used them on Saturday during my run. The roads around my neighborhood are still pretty snow covered, but once I get to the main road it is clear. There is still a lot of winter left, though, so I am sure I will get to try them out soon!

Steve-Have fun on your cruise! I have never been on one, but I have heard about all the food...good luck trying to work it all off!

Hope everyone else is staying warm! I have been getting my long runs in and am up to 6 miles with 6 weeks until the Princess 1/2. I am feeling pretty good about that! My longest run is supposed to be a 10 miler, but I may try to do 11...we will see when the time comes! My mom just ordered me a Sparkle Skirt for an (early) birthday gift for me to wear for the race. It should be here for me to try by early next week! I am super excited about that! I also just ordered a Nathan Speed Pack (in Pink of course!) which should be here in time for next weekend's long runs. All the new gear should keep me motivated!

I hope everyone is having a good week.

Maura: I checked out tough mudder and that looks awesome. Looks like there will be one about 2 hours from my house in October. If it'll work with my travel schedule I think I may try it. I have a group of friends doing warrior dash but thats no till later in the year. I may do that too. Its only a 5 k and looks fun. My main interest in rugged maniac is that its relatively soon and close. With the exception of Disney in Jan I have a hard time looking much past April for races.

Tracyz: Welcome. Sounds like you have quite the full calendar. I hope to do Goofy too in 2012. I don't have the race experience you have, but I really like medals.

Steve: Sounds like you have an awesome race calendar. Good luck on not gaining weight on the cruise. We're going on the dream in March and I have similar aspirations. I gained about 5 pounds marathon weekend though so I don't hold out much hope for that.

How's everybody doing on the 100 day challenge? I'm doing alright keeping up with my workouts. I am also doing the c25k with my DW and DS. Its fun family time and I am using it to start building up milage in my vff's. Not sure if its just mental, but my knees always feel better when I run in them.

Hey Florida Girl (and anyone else interested)- sorry for the late reply
My niece did an intensive diet and exercise camp over the summer (Wellspring-I think) She researched it and decided this is what she needed to do to make the changes she needed too. I am so proud of her- we went to Boma on Sunday night after the race events and she had unbuttered pasta and fruit!
For the half- she told me the longest she ran was 5 miles but I knew she was physically active doing soccer and track. I was a little nervous since I had to complete the half in 3.5 hours. We did galloway and walked 2 ran 1. She finished strong and I believe I held her back. There were SO many people that it was impossible to go any faster!
I did the walk 2 run 1 for the full and finished in 6 (my goal was just to finish- next year will be better but I had a blast and would not have changed ANYTHING!)
I did the MCM a few years ago with a walk 1/run 2 and I actually did better with the walk 2/run 1!

Wow...that's awesome! And I can't believe she didn't even splurge at Boma...she definitely deserved it, but kudos to her for sticking to her plan.

Any tips for Goofy training? It sounds like we're pretty similar speeds...I also use the Galloway method and my goal is simply to finish.

Hi Goofs! It's been an interesting week for me. Last Friday was my final day of work as an active duty member of the Air Force. With 12 years invested I planned on making it a career, but as we know plans change. The economic crisis rolled over into the military...the Air Force ended up with too many officers in my career field, as the normal attrition rate didn't happen because people stopped getting out voluntarily due to the poor job market in the civilian world. So they were forced to have a RIF (reduction in force) and I was one of the 'lucky' ones that got selected to leave :sad2: I can't be mad, because at the point I was at in my career, there really were no truly 'bad' officers and for the most part everyone was deserving of being retained. I am of the mindset that everything happens for a reason, so I am approaching this hurdle with that in mind. For the first time in 12 years, I don't have the Air Force telling me where I'm going to live, so we're looking to relocate back to Florida. The job search is on, and as soon as I can secure a job down there, we'll be headed back 'home'.

I have had a job since I was 16, so this week was the first time in almost 20 years that I've been without a job...weird!

Anyway...looking forward to getting back into a running routine. I've already failed at the 100-day challenge, so my goal now is just to get back into running 3-5 days per week.

Tracyz: Welcome!

Steve: Have a blast on your cruise. I've become addicted to cruising Disney...we took our first cruise in Dec 2009 (Wonder) and had so much fun we rebooked on board. Just completed our second cruise in Dec 2010 (Magic) and have three more cruises in the pipeline...B2B on the Dream in Dec 2011 and Fantasy in June 2012 (of course I have to find a job first, or we may have to put our plans on hold :sad1:)

Shannon Wow....kudos for your level-headedness about your situation. I hope you find something in the near future. I hope, also, that the AF provided you with some sort of reasonable transition.

Ryan I actually thought about whether or not some sort of sleeve would work. May need to find something by Sunday, or else run with my waist pack and just drink less since I'm doing 20 and it's only supposed to be a round 8 when I start my run (not factoring in any wind)

Ashleigh DH is from Pittsburgh, so rooting for the Steelers is a no-brainer. I arun with a Nathan 2 bottle pack and have always appreciated it. Worn it in every race over 10k that I have ever done. Sounds like your Princess training is going well. Still haven't managed to figure any way to get to FL for Princess for $500 or less (my self-imposed $ limit) so I guess it'll be more cold training runs for me.

Did one of my harder XT wrokouts today---and don't laugh--- 20 laps of kick board in the pool. The 65+ year old guy in the lane next to me was going faster doing a dog paddle! Makes you appreciate how much of swimming is really in the arms. Also did some fit ball exercises. Still need to work in more weight training though.

Need to go look for some more gear this weekend, I think. On top of something to maybe help with my Camelbak tube, I think I need a balaclava (for the days when it's windy) and some mittens.

Anyway, I wish I was running away to somewhere warm right about now.

Stay warm, Goofs!

Maura

Maura: If it was just the tube that froze, CamelBak does offer insulated tubes. Just check out CamelBak.com and look under accessories.

Maura-Bummer you won't be able to make it down for the Princess. I am soooo looking forward to the break from winter! I think I will especially be lookign forward to it after this weekends upcoming runs...like you it is only supposed to be in the single digits! Yippie! I am already thinking about adding another layer when I head out.

Shannon-Good luck with all the transitions you are going through. You seem to have a pretty good attitude about it all!

Happy weekend Goofs!

I finally got out for a run this morning :woohoo: It had been over a month since I went for a run. My doctor had me trying some blood pressure medication for headaches I've been having, but after 3 weeks on it (with no relief from the headaches), I felt like crap. I had no energy and was walking around like a zombie...my resting heart rate was down to 40! The doc told me that I would feel a little more tired when I went for my runs, but this was ridiculous...I couldn't even get out the door. So I went off the medicine and am finally feeling more normal again. I met a friend this morning and ran with a local running group that's training for the OKC marathon. I did a very slow 6 miles, but it felt good.

I have done no running since coming back from Disney- I have a huge blister under my big toenail that is still quite painful.
I have been going to Bikram several times a week- I feel so gross and so good at the same time!

Hiya Goofs,
Got a sick kiddo at home, and DW is feeling a bit under the weather, so my runs for the weekend were shorter than I would have liked. Tuesday is what I am calling decision day - assuming DD is well enough for preschool, I plan on doing a 10 or 11 mile run. If it goes well, then it's time to bite the bullet and sign up for both the Illinois and Kalamazoo marathons, as well as the 8-hour CRUD ultra. If it does not go well, then I may not sign up for any of them.

Oh, FWIW - toenails really are optional equipment. Last time I checked, I am still missing a few of mine, and they probably won't be coming back anytime soon.

It's not the toenail- it's the blister! Hoping to get running soon but I'm pretty happy doing Bikram several days a week for now!

I get them from time to time (the blisters under the toenails) - I have been known to take a pin vice and simply drill (slowly and carefully) a hole in the nail to relieve the pressure.

(FWIW - I cannot say that I actually recommend doing this. I'm just a little bit crazier than most, I guess. :rotfl: )

I have actually done this with some of my patients- paperclip works the best- just be sure to avoid the luna to avoid perm. damage. Usually works best for crush type injuries and not repeative type issues. Avoid the spray too!

Hi Goofs,

Off to Pittsburgh for the next few days....M-I-L passed away yesterday. Not unexpected, and both DH and SIL seem to be doing reasonably well given the cirucmstances. DH had to fly back from Germany and is fighting a cold plus jet lag so hope he hangs tough.

Dedicated yoga to her this evening and had a very strong class.

Maura

Sorry to hear about your MIL Maura. Saying a prayer for your family, especially your DH.

thoughts and prayers to you Maura.

AFM- I hope I DO NOT see you in April- signed up to be a medical volunteer at the Boston Marathon again this year:cheer2:

Maura, so sorry for your family's loss.

AFM- 1 month from today I will be doing my first 1/2 marathon!

Did a relatively local 8k this morning. I had hoped to finish with a pace in the 7s but wound up averaging 8:05. It was still my fastest race average (although since it was only my third race) that wasn't much of a challenge. I've only really had a chance to run 3 times since we got back from Disney, so my big takeaway is "I'll never hit my goals without consistent training".... I feel like that should be followed by a "duh!".

Hope everyone's enjoying their weekend and getting their miles in.

I hope your family is still dealing well Maura.

Ryan
