2011 Destashing Thread

I went through my bakeware cabinet and giving extra cake pans that I don't use to one of the college kids from my church.

Cleaned out two out of four drawers in the desk today. I shall tackle the other two in the morning.

Threw out an entire filing cabinet drawer of WDW planning books, videos & brochures. From as far back as 2000. Also travel info for places we planned to go but never made it to.

Its all available online and way more up to date. :thumbsup2

After I throw laundry in the washer, I'm going to work on the laundry room for 30 minutes and then go upstairs and work through youngest DD's room.

During spring break, I went through all of the girls old summer clothes and saved just a small pile (what would fit) and donated the rest. These were sitting in the hallway linen closet and now it looks so empty in there.

I did it! I finally posted some stuff on e-bay. Feels good to free myself of this stuff, and hopefully make some $ for the trip at the same time. I have 24 items up and have in mind a bunch more to add to it tomorrow!!:cool1::cool1::cool1:

Hope everyone else's weekend was productive, too!

Hows it going on Ebay? I've been debating getting started but have read many don't recommend it now :confused3

I have been doing a little on craigslist however, but only about half of it has sold.

This past weekend, I started to clean out the shed and got rid of:

old broken down lawnmower (why did I keep it over the winter??)

some pieces of scrap metal (not even sure where they came from!!)

broken rake (again, why did I keep it after I replaced it w/ a new one??)

three drawer file cabinet (organized all of my extra electrical supplies into an empty toolbox and 2 small storge boxes that fit on a shelf!!)

garbage bag of assorted papers, boxes, and such

various small items (placed into a box for a yard sale in the near future!!)

and that was only about an hours worth of work.

It's going slow and steady. I put a bunch of summer clothes that the kids outgrew in consignment. I made about $150. I went through their closets again and I have about as much as last time. I had them try on some stuff that was close to their size, and they won't work for this summer. So it's on to consignment, round 2. I need to sort everything and get them ready.

I also have a large bag for donation by the door for my next trip out.

We got rid of a grocery bag of assorted receipts and misc paperwork

I got rid of 3 more books that I have read!!!

Threw out another ratty t-shirt!!!

not a lot but at least it is something:confused3

I've gotten done:

more kitchen 'stuff' downsizing
boys' clothes sorted through and packed up to mail out for my friend's son
resisted buying anything from Gymboree with my gymbucks ;)
coat sort
shoe sort and downsize and seasons switched out

I also bought new cabinets for the front door area to organize and clean it up. I just need to put them together.

Did a major paper sort and toss.

Did a toss/sort/giveaway on coloring books and preschool workbooks

Went through the art bins in my room and brought a couple bags of stuff to the preschool for them to use.

This week my plan is:

finish going through the art bins (most are in the boys' closet) and takecraft stuff to the preschool

flat surface declutter in our room, including put away or get rid of dust catchers

get rid of old computer and computer things (need to figure out how to wipe the hard drives)

start (finish? ) my closet sort. It's the catch all for everything.

This coming weekend my goal is to sort through the 3 bins of random stuff in the garage. They've been there for a LONG time and are filled with stuff from when parents have come to visit and I needed to do a quick clean up.

My huge L shaped desk with hutch. GONE! Filing cabinets too.

I'm really paring down my office / craft room / guest room. Getting rid of lots that just been in closets. Bought a nice new fast duplex scanner & going to be getting rid of a lot of these paper files!

That's sad. I wish I had kept park guides from all the years we'd visited. It would have been great. Instead, we always threw them away when we were done with them.

Don't worry, I still have maps in my photo albums, our videos & our memories. I live in a condo and can't dedicate an entire room to storage of stuff any longer. We are middle aged with no children. We have been to WDW over 8 times. A lot of this stuff was redundant. No one else is going to be interested in it after us. At this point in my life, I have a better idea of what is worth keeping & what isn't worth it any longer.

I kept what was important - our experiences. Marketing materials not so important to me.

Any Indy area people interested in the upcoming free community shred days at my credit union?

What kind did you get?

Glad to see this thread because I need to get motivated! I had planned to get a lot done over spring break this week but spent most of it sick, staying w/sick DD, and trying to fix computer problems.

Wish we had a shred day here because we have a big box of old stuff to shred! I did get rid of a big stack of papers to recycle this week. I'm slowly trying to work my way around the house again.

Our community is having a yard sale next weekend so against my better judgment, I told the kids we'd set out some stuff. Whatever doesn't sell will go straight to Goodwill that day.

Finished cleaning out the living room desk. It is so nice to have a place to store important papers again.

I also tackled the linen closet this week. We had a bunch of travel sized health and beauty items that I took up to our city hall. They then distribute them to people who come to use the food bank or they send them to a shelter. It depends on where the greater need is at the moment.

My goals for next week is finishing up my dad's office. He passed almost two years ago and had not been down there for a few years prior to that so it is kinda a mess. I hope to get it all cleaned out and the desks out in the next two weeks since that is when our next bulk trash pick-up is. There is so much paper work that it is hard to know where to begin.

Ok - GOAL for today to do some more stuff in the "Multi-purpose room". Had the brillant idea to repurpose the one cabinet for all my scout stuff. I've been wrestling with getting rid of it b/c it takes up room in that room and I only have stuff that I need to sort out in it - but was going to buy a whole new cabinet for the garage to keep my troop in - duh! Why not repurpose it for a good use and go through the other stuff in the mean time!
We have a "Shredder Day" next week at the local high school, so I need to get my stuff together (that is also in that room) and take it over to dispose of all that.
Getting really frustrated with all the stuff that doesn't have a "HOME".

I'd love some info on that! I've gotten rid of a lot of the papers already but I've been hanging onto stuff I'd rather shred.

Also for Indy area people... Upcoming electronics recycling at the zoo:

:cool1: I have a pile of stuff to bring... that I wasn't exactly sure how to get rid of.

Thank you so much for posting these! :goodvibes

ETA~ looks like the zoo is doing double duty...shredding and electronics drop off. And they'll wipe the hard drives too so I don't even have to do it myself. Wow, even easier for me!
