2010 Tri Thread

Oh I gotcha - well, 3 used to be my long run but since I trained and did the tri, it's my usual run now. 4 is my long run. If it's really hot outside (over 90)I'll take it back to maybe 2.25 or 2.5 just to be safe.

So, in line for the Port-o-Potties at RnR SAT didn't count? ;)

Of course it counts, even though I was at 0 medals at that point, meeting you and other WISHers was gold enough for me, even though the porta-potty line lacks the glamour of any Disney event.

Ahhh..I got it now. Still as close as I have come to fame, though. :rotfl:

So, I was whining about not wanting tri season to end. God heard me adn gave me weather that made me want to end it Saturday. Cold and rain. brrr... Still fun, though. And, I PR'd the bike! Woo hoo. Pretty good fro the awful wind we had. Had my best run of the season too. I'll take it.

So, it's a pipe dream and has a lot of contingencies, but anyone for IM FL 2012? :scared1: Step 1: lose weight and get my pace down. Step 2: A MUCH faster 70.3 next year. Step 4: If looks do-able, sign up.

Way to go Carrie. Sounds like you did good but what the heck is "PR'd teh bikl!"

I assume it is some sort of tri talk that I don't know about. Sounds impressive so I guess it is good so keep it up :)

I am looking at IMFL or IMAZ in 2011. Not sure which one but I need to decide because the window of opportunity is very short.

enjoy,
Duane

:rotfl: I got a Personal record (pace wise) on teh bike. Sorry about all teh typos!

A friend told me that FL was best for beginners. Salt water is easier to swim in and the bike course is relatively flat. It was her not-so-subtle way of saying "no way, no how can you do WI." :rotfl2:

Good job on your race, Carrie! I'm jealous - I wish I had one to do.

I did my 4 mile run on Friday afternoon and realized that NO, I would NOT be doing a 10K in 2 weeks. The run went fine, felt great, pace was good - I finished in 43 min so I was happy with that. What made me decide not to do the other run on Sunday to start looking at the 10K is that it is still so freakin' hot in the afternoon! That is when I run - have to. It's just too hot for me to spend a lot of time outside running to get ready.

I live near a very large city - and I'm finding it hard to believe that there are NO races in like Nov/Dec that I can do. Tons of 5Ks - we're doing one in October for the children's hospital - but no 10Ks. Is that weird?

mgsmom - SOrry about the race. Sounds liek a good decision, though. I woudl think there would be alot more races in your area in teh fall. :confused3

Ahhh..I got it now. Still as close as I have come to fame, though. :rotfl:

Looking forward to our next meeting!

I could be convinced to do IMFL 2012, assuming I have recovered enough from my IMTX 2011 by the time registration opens and I forget all the pain involved.;)

Also, a big WTG for your end of year tri!

Regarding, IMFL, I'm going to chime in since I lived within a couple hours of there for a few years. Although the times are notoriously fast among those who are "fast" to begin with, I wouldn't exactly call it a cakewalk of a course for MOP or BOPers. Look at youtube videos of the swim from previous years, and some years you're dealing with ocean waves that you wouldn't find in any lake swim. For a slow swimmer like me that can be costly. For example at IMWI I swam 1:54, and in Lake Erie (might as well be an ocean) I swam 2:15 due to waves/current. That put me dangerously close to the cutoff.

Although the bike is flat, that means using the exact same muscles for almost the entire 112, maintaining the same back/neck position, etc. I prefer it getting broken up. Wind is always a strong possibility, so make sure your training includes it when possible, including headwinds for the last portions instead of the first. The run is pancake, of course.

Don't want to sound like a negative nancy, but added costs of traveling to FL where there's no major airport and the jacked up prices of lodging there just to do an "easy" course might not be worth it, especially if having to travel twice in order to volunteer the year before and secure a slot.

Although it will sound like they hired me to advertise, I'll just post the Facebook link of the Rev3 race I did this past weekend:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/REVOLUTION3-Triathlon-REV3TRI/339986125091?v=wall&ref=ts

Just look at all the comments, including tons of first timers. There's something to be said about doing an M-Dot race as your first (and obviously I shelled out the cash to do that) but being able to sign up all the way up to a couple weeks before knowing you trained properly and are uninjured is certainly convenient versus a year out...

Edit: One more thing, weather. I completely believe the difference between my 16:47 and my 14:42 in the span of one year was weather. I wilt in the heat, and the high in WI was 85 that day with nary a cloud, whereas the high in Sandusky was no higher than 75 with mostly cloudy skies all day. That was the difference between cramping/seizing on the bike, and being able to run 80% of the marathon. Obviously FL in November generally isn't "hot" and is sometimes downright cold, but it's certainly more of a wild card.

Since Duane was asking for a cycling jersey I've been chewing on a few ideas for a while and just finally got a chance to put pencil to paper and came up with this. Just like before; input is always appreciated. Thanks.

I had to back out of another tri today because of my injury. While I know I shouldn't be, I am really disappointed in myself for backing out. I was taught to never quit and backing out is the same in my brain for me.

I see a orthopedic surgeon a week from tomorrow for my injuries which are no cartilage left in the ankle/foot, making everything bone-on-bone, bone chips and scar tissue from previous injuries, ligament damage with some failure there, and accessory navicular. The accessory navicular means I am an extra-special snowflake because I have two navicular bones. This is causing most of my pain as the bones put pressure on my tendons and ligaments and make healing from an injury take longer.

My doctor and my physical therapist told me the ortho would say there are 3 things she may be able to do to treat the injuries: scope the ankle to remove scar tissue and bone chips; remove the extra navicular bone and then reattach the ligaments and tendons to the other bone; and finally, nothing they can do for me.

I told both of them the ortho will probably say a 4th option - that I have turned into a wimp and to just grow a backbone. ;) While he was manipulating my ankle, my PT told me that the 4th isn't likely to happen because I'm not a wimp. I asked him how he knew this and he said if he was doing this manipulation on anyone else, he would be scraping them off the ceiling. Then he told me to stop blocking the pain with my brain and admit when something hurts.

So, Coach, any suggestions on what books to read on coming back from injury?

monsterkitty - So sorry about the ankle! ohpe they can find a solution! :grouphug:

Matt - Thanks for the input. We were pretty well set on WI, but a good friend, who has done both recommended FL for us. 1. We can rent a condo for a week in FL for teh same amount as 3 nights hotel in WI. (Not lovin' the drive but not impossioble, especially if we make a vacation of it) 2. We can practice in Lake MI, so we will be ready for the ocean. (Although the thought of sharks bothers me quite a bit) 3. We had a hard time with the hills @ Steelhead. That elevation change is the same as FL (100-some feet). WI is 400-some feet. :scared1: 4. mahera said she'd ocme scream team for us. :goodvibes Weather can't be depended on anywhere. I do hope to do at least a half at CP sometime. Waiting anxiously for your report! ;) As you said, though, MUST do M-dot the first time. We're likely going to volunteer at Im WI next year adn scream team fro skfulkers, so I will keep your advice in mind and will be all set if it changes. So good to see you here!

Dirty Bunny - I'd still really liek to see teh DLF>DNF>>DNS spelled out on there. Get so many commments on that and gives me confidence. (Silly, I know). ALso, any reason we would not use teh standard WISH racing team log on teh front, minus the runners?

Spelling it out isn't the big deal..making it look good and easy to read on the jersey is the big deal..I think I may just rip it off the back of the running shirts but we'll see if it will transfer well..as for standard typeset..didn't change it for any reason other than inspirations sake so that can alwasy go back. I do appreciate all the input though.

As for the jersey if any of you are interested in providing input and making it a reality I'm willing to start another thread where we can really work on making it happen. I want everyone to be involved. This isn't a one man show; never has been. If everyone would rather just work on it here in the tri thread as we go along that's fine with me.

I had to just about get a shovel to dig up this thread from where it was buried, not that I am the greatest poster around here... :rolleyes1 ....

I made it back home safe and sound from the Disneyworld Wine and Dine Half Marathon. I had a great time enjoying myself out there and think this can become a great Disney race in the future, assuming they learn a thing or two. The was my slowest half marathon run time (and I don't even know what it was!), but it was also the most memorable and enjoyable--and that was what mattered for this event.

I'll see what I've got photo-wise and start working on a real race report.

Hello,

For those wanting a "WISH racing team" Headsweats brand Visor and/or Hat by the January Marathon Weekend, please hurry and place your order over on the thread. I need to get the minimums before the end of the month so the order can be placed and I can get them mailed out to people.

Find the link below in my signature for the Hat/Visor order (not the special order Visor)

Thanks!!

Richard - Great job on WInde & DIne! Glad to ehar it was so fun! Still not sure if this body can run that far, that late after a WDW day. ToT last year killed me and we had teh most relaxing WDW day ever for us. (OK< if I otld anybody what relaxing WDW day really was, they'd laugh at me, but still....) So glad to hear it was so much fun that the time did not matter! Can't waiit for a report!

2010 Wine and Dine Half Marathon Race Report

Although the event had some flaws, I had a really great time there. I got off to a fun, though not smart, start to my weekend by spending Friday night at my first MNSSHP, which I loved! Unfortunately I woke up Saturday with legs that were already tired out. I made a point to get some rest (although no sleep) after I hit the expo in the morning, plus I also grabbed a Beaches and Cream meet (I had a double pineapple sundae because I did not want anything too big :rotfl: ). After that some light rest before getting on the resort bus around 7 that night for the trip to the WWOS. There I had a few hours to wait with my WISH friends (both old and new) before corral time.

At race start I took off at a quick pace for the first two miles and got to the Mile 2 marker around 21 minutes into the race. That's when I settled down and just concentrated on fun. I stopped at about every photo op they had, plus a few I made up along the way. I stopped to dance to the music at times, and just walked and chatted at times as well. Somewhere around the Mile 11 point I went back into run mode and covered the last 2 miles in about 22 minutes with a good sprint at the end. Obviously my 3:31:39 finish time is indicative of my spending lots of time out in the middle of the course with frineds, but I had an absolute blast just walking around and having fun.

I was somewhat less impressed with the afte party. All the long lines for food and drink left me with a (no pun intended) bad taste in my mouth. However, all the food I did get to try was very good. I saw a number of people being assisted in the party area by emergency workers, and I imagine part of their problem was walking around looking for food and drink for an hour after they finished their half marathon. I eventually made it back to the hotel room around 430 that morning.

All in all I thought this was a great race and I'd love to do it again!

Sunday was later enjoyed with trips to Animal Kingdom, EPCOT, Whispering Canyon (where I finished a LARGE iced tea plus 2 regular glasses) and another MNSSHP.

Richard - Way to make the most of your race and your weekend!! 2 MNSSHP's???? Awesome!

Way to go Richard! I also heard it was a fun race until the finish. Hope they learned because I'd love to try this race.

I couldn't make the race because I participated in the Siesta Key Sprint this weekend. Great time! The weather was awesome!

Swim was 800m which went by fast. I actually like the swimming now. If you remember my first tri report back in March, I panicked and had to swim side stroke the whole way. This time I started near the front, very little banging as there were only about 70 in my wave (the older guy wave). Ended up 14 out of 42 (AG) for the swim at just over 15 min.

LOOOOONG run up the beach to the bikes. It was that sugary sand, really tough to run in. Decent transition (still need to get faster though).

Bike was comfortable. I averaged just above 20 the whole way. Thought I did great until I saw I was 18 out of 42 in my age group. Ugh! But, I really couldn't have pushed much more. I need to get faster on the bike.

Good transition. I have started taking my shoes off during the last 1/2 mile on the bike. Seems to help.

Run was back down through that sand to the beach and was an out and back down the beach. The tide was pretty high so there wasn't much room to run. The entire run we were running on the side of a hill. It was a tough run. Then of course, to get to the finish we had to run back up through the sand to the finish line. Had nothing left for a kick. But, I did have negative splits of 8:20, 8:16 and 8:12.

Overall a very nice race. Great spread of food at the finish. I even ate a Danish telling myself "you just ran a triathlon you can at least have a Danish" :) Ok, then I also had M&M's, peanuts, etc. Very good food.

I am training for longer races so these sprints really take their toll. You go all out for 1:23:45 (my finish time) instead of actually pacing yourself. I won’t have another sprint until next year sometime. I have a few 5k's, the HIM in November then a few half marathons and that will be it. I will be looking forward to a little break.

Enjoy,
Duane
