2010 promo information is here! "Give a Day. Get a Disney Day."

I signed up and inquired about an opportunity to volunteer (the closest one to my house- 10miles), and got an email response today that my time needed to complete the "give a day, get a day" program with them would be one week and 40 hours! Yikes...I don't think so. It's a great cause and I would love to help them, but realistically, I cannot help for 40 hours. Hopefully some more opportunities will open up close to me soon. I would be curious to know how many people actually sign up for that? And, it's a little misleading because it doesn't state the time needed to fulfill the obligation in the description on the website.

Sorry to hear how time consuming it would be to volunteer with that particular organization. That is rather shocking. I too hope that you will be able to find another opportunity, one that will fit your schedule as well as being close to home. 10 miles for me would be fine, but I know that some people would prefer a bit closer.
I was thinking..... (Oh no! ;) ) that $72 divided by 40, does not compute too well, unless perhaps it is 1810.

For that many hours you better be getting an AP not just a 1 day free ticket! :scared1:

There are almost no opportunities in our city (San Antonio). I will have to mail the blankets to the National Headquarters so I think the whole thing including materials and shipping will cost about $40.

I live in San Antonio also and have done the same project. My family and I have just completed 5 blankets and I was able to deliver the blankets today to the project manager. We are now waiting for the email vouchers from Disney. There were very few volunteer opportunities in SATX-Project Linus was in Austin. I ran into a problem with The San Antonio Children's Museum. They were signed up as participating in the "Give A Day". Contact info all wrong. When I finally contacted the museum directly; they knew nothing about this Disney deal. Many more problems. This has not been smooth! But job done! Not sure we will get the vouchers in time. Here's hoping.

Disney here we come 1/17/10-1/24/10.

Texas RN would you post when you get your vouchers. We are volunteering this Sat for our trip on the 23rd of Jan. It would be great to know how much time it actually takes to get the vouchers. Seems like it wouldn't take 2 weeks since its email not snail mail...:thumbsup2

I wish I could volunteer...too bad the closest volunteer opportunity is 46 miles away and then 65 and up after that. Living in a small town is lame.

There are volunteer at home opportunities that others' here have reported finding. Maybe you can do one of those. :goodvibes

So did you drop them in San Antonio or Austin. Bummer I mailed mine on Tuesday. Oh well, it only cost $8 to mail and I don't really have the time to drive anywhere. My total cost came in at $26. Well, more if you count the materials I had on hand which was almost everything except for the Hannah Montana fleece and quilt batting for the other 2. I did learn a ton about quilting since I usually just sew clothes and pillows, curtains, etc. They are in the slow mail so they probably won't get there until Tuesday. I'll let everyone know when we get our vouchers as well.

Yes, I will post when I get the email voucher confirmation. I would start a new thread so people can keep track of everyone's wait times, but I don't know what I am doing and how to start a new thread. Good luck to you.

When I signed up, there was only Austin. Now I see that they have a branch in San Antonio. I was fortunate in that the project manager was willing to meet me in Kyle (just north of San Marcos) so I could deliver the finished projects. She really worked with me and for that I am thankful! Time was of the essence- since we are planning to leave for WDW 1/17/10.
We only made 1 large blanket per person (2 adults and 3 kids) = 5 total. I see several posts from other Project Linus people (other cities), and they are being asked to do 2 per person- some double sided. It took us a long time- around 5 hours. But I think it is because I am not crafty! We did the no sew fleece blankets only. I have to say the blankets turned out cute. Materials I got were 1/2 off @ Handcock Fabrics, but over all still a little costly as we made 5 large blankets for teen boys.

OK, I feel better know. It would have cost me almost as much in gas as it did to ship. It also saved me 2 hours of driving so I am OK with it. The quilts took me two days and I am pretty crafty but they turned out really special and one of a kind. I was really proud of myself. DD's was fleece that dad and her completed. It was double sided but only took an hour. DD made one with girl scouts for project linus back in Nov. She wants to make more so I might go get some more fleece this weekend while it's still on sale. My mom's church quilting group makes them also so I will send them through her. The local San Antonio chapter here is not participating. I am going to join them this summer when schools out so I can learn a bit more as I really enjoyed it and would love to hand quilt in front of the TV this summer. I think people apreciate these for baby gifts too as not too many people make handmade things anymore.

We did our volunteer service today and it was awesome! My family of 5; Me, DH DS 15, DS 9 & DS 6 volunteered at the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden to prune the roses. The event had 400 volunteers and it was lots of fun. They were totally organized and we completed the project in 2 hours. Star Roses donated a rose ball for each volunteer to take home.

With the help of a little :tinker: pixie dust we are hoping that our vouchers come before we leave in 2 weeks. Whether they come in time or not, it was a great experience and now all of my boys know how to prune roses and rake a flower bed!

I almost signed up for this one but couldn't get the site to work that first weekend. When I got in there it was filled. But we did sign up to work with rescued horses! We'll be doing that next week. Sounds like a great experience for us. I think I would like to do this anyway!
Got my dh and I registered and I am so excited!!!! I love roses, but can't quite figure out how to make them grow big and lovely here in the desert. Well, our volunteer opportunity is pruning roses at the community college. We will receive instruction, donuts and coffee/ tea. I think I would actually do this without the benefit of tickets. How exciting!

I can't figure out how to get dd signed up yet. Lots of bugs on this site today and I couldn't sign her up for anything we could do because she is 7. The only thing she can do is a really cool library program where they read 10 books, clean the book covers, make a picture about volunteering and then make mouse ears. So cute. I just can't get her signed up. I guess I'll have to try again tomorrow. I can't be the only one. There has been 99 openings for this all day long.

Yeah! We got our vouchers today! DH mailed our blankets on Tuesday so this is way faster than I expected! Can't wait for our one day trip in March!

I found this on-sale at Joann.com for $6.49 per kit. It is a no sew fleece Tinkerbelle blanket kit. Great for kids to make and it fits the Project Linus requirements. Good Luck!

Yes, This is exactly like the Hannah Montana one Lilly did with dad. The cut lines are even printed on it. Super easy. It was hard for my 6yo to cut through both layers though. But she had no problem tying the knots. I would reccommend tying every other knot and then flipping the blanket over to tie the others. It makes a nice pattern this way.

Does anyone have any advice for the following situation:

I found a volunteer opportunity for MLK Jr. Day cleaning up a local skate park. I contacted the organizer and got my family registered (2 adults, 2 children ages 9 & 6). I then tried to register us through the Hands on Network. Turns out that the website said the minimum age is 13. The website would not allow me to register my children because they are under this age requirement.

I emailed the organizer again and she said she has no idea why the minimum age is 13. They will actually allow children as young as 2 to participate.

I couldn't find any contact information so I went to the Hands on Network main site and found the following address:

info@handsonnetwork.org

I sent an email outlining the problem and asking for help. That was on Tuesday and I haven't heard anything back. Our volunteer day is coming up and I'd like to get this settled before that date.

Does anyone have any advice on who else I could/should be contacting?

Thanks.
