2010 news from the Magic

Just a couple of thoughts worth repeating....

The new cruises fro 2010 will have a preview from DCL, on October 7th, you may see something here just before then, I was told the ' on sale' date is October 21st.

These dates seem to have been confirmed by many people, and to make a 'point' they have been known for some time, ie DCL have their plans set for 2010 now, its in the bag and they are ready to release these.

We often on these boards look at things over a very short timescale, get a bit of information and presume it will happen there and then. DCL works years in advance, it plans further and further into the future every year.

We see that from the early 'on sale' dates, moving forward approx two months each year. last year 2009 was released in December.

With two new ships coming they have to expand their routes and already are planning on what these will be, the planning is more for the Magic and Wonder as the new ships will just take over the existing Caribbean and Bahama routes.

Some Dissers have shown me copies of the memos for application for DCL to cruise in Alaska, its in the name of the Magical cruise company based in London UK.

So they want to go there, but remember planning a cruise or a number of cruises getting permission, costing the price for ports as well as food, arranging shore trips getting arrangements with flights and local operators etc, to name a few things takes considerable time.

Whats in the bag for 2010, and will be announced on the 7th of next month, has been worked on for the last couple of years, and any Dry dock plans for the Magic in the next few weeks has been planned for, for over a year and the cut off for works stopped a few months back. So any 'needs' for 2010, for the ships would have been factored in months back.

Worth looking at the work done on the ship, for clues.

We wrok in mins and hours here on these boards DCL works in years!

What you are saying makes perfect sense! Thanks for the reality check.

So what work has been done on the ship lately? I haven't been on since the Med last summer.

Jodie

Not that it is that reliable, ut while getting of the EB yesterday, a porter said with confidence that the one of the old ships is going to the West Coast and the other is going to the Med once the new ships are online. That's a little farther away though. No help with 2010, unless it is a trial run.

I've been thinking and saying the same thing, Andrew. DCL has their itineraries planned for quite a few years. (now if we could just get access to them <insert devilish smilie here>). It's always fun to dig around on the internet to find port permits, etc. though

pillow- the Magic is going into a 3 week drydock. Usual time is 2 weeks. So, when she gets out there should be lot's to tell. We need to make some friends with folks going on that first cruise out!

Yes we Had a lot of rumors on the ship in the last few weeks, and as usual the Captain fueled these a bit, but you cannot be releasing 2010 cruises on October 7th, and haven't even been told if you are successful in your bid for ports in Alaska as yet. They work in years, and so do other cruise lines, but for example Princess have the advantage of doing it every year already.

There isn't any work on the Magic since the Med last year, its what they will do in dry dock from Friday that will be of interest, for example if you were going to Alaska, they would need to add retractable pool covers.

Its this Friday they go into dry dock?

A little disappointed about the October booking date since we won't cruise again until Thanksgiving. Prices on the new cruise will likely have gone up by then so my 10% will probably be cancelled out by the price increase. Oh well - not sure I can afford another European cruise anyway. Summer airfares are outrageous!

If its Northern Europe, any idea of the departure port?

Thanks for another clear and insightful post Andrew - having been out of the loop and not uptodate on the disboards can I ask is it still your opinion that the 2010 release is likely to be a European itinerary? Any word \ rumours of anything more specific?

Some Baltic \ Northern European cruises leave out of Southampton UK which would be just about as close to perfect as it would get for me!

In terms of airfare, London is probably the cheapest option from the US. Still not cheap, but cheapEST!! Some decent flights out of Dulles.

We're facing the same issue. We won't be sailing until Thanksgiving. Yes, I would go ahead and book when the new itinerary is bookable. Then when you're on the cruise, check the pricing and see if the 10% discount is worth booking (the price may have gone up though between your original booking and when you cruise - possibly cancelling out any discount). You could then cancel your original booking after the new res is made.

Jodie

I am interested in doing a Med cruise, but I don't want to go in the summer. If DCL were to start in the spring and continue through the fall - I might be persuaded to go with them...depending on the itinerary.

I don't think this is something that Disney will do at this time. They had a hard enough time filling in the transatlantic cruises that fell into the school days for a lot of people. Once the new ships are out this may be something they would consider

We're cruising on Nov.8th so hopefully the price won't go up in just 3 weeks.

I booked our Med cruise on the first day bookings were available - early in the morning - around 9:00ish. The prices actually went up as the day went on. I can't remember exactly how much, but I remember it was a few hundred dollars at least.

If you look at the Q&A for the glacier bay cruise ship prospectus, it is pretty clear that one of the newcomer applicants doesn't want to go Glacier Bay in 2010 (see question #3). And if you read into the response and suppose that the example given is relevant, then the applicant didn't necessarily want to go in 2011 either. And given that there are only 2 new applicants we have just about a 50% shot that the applicant question is from DCL. I think it is MUCH more likely than 50% that the question came from DCL.

Remember that the glacier bay day is really just a day at sea. I do not believe that it would be very difficult in 18 months to substitute a day at sea. I don't think you can compare the Glacier Bay day to a port visit. There are several very viable, as well as more profitable, alternatives to Glacier Bay as well (Hubbard Glacier and Tracy Arm are also very popular destinations).

No, they would not NEED to do that at all. Nor would they need to install reinforcements to the hull so that they could break ice. See http://disboards.com/showpost.php?p=27207564&postcount=73

I wouldn't expect Disney to do so - even after the new ships are available. They are heavily dependent on families, and a lot of people wouldn't take their kids out of school in the spring or fall for a 2-week cruise.

While a retractable pool cover would come in handy in Alaska, it isn't a necessity for cruising there.
