***2009-2010*** cheer parent thread!!

D's team was all ready to perform Saturday when a girl on the preceding team didn't leave the mat. Instead she threw up. This must be fairly common, because the staff was all ready with the shop vac, etc. They even went along with the music, playing "Take This Job and Shove It" and the Barney "Clean Up" song. Kind of funny but I guess that poor girl has now had her "life's most embarrassing moment."

happens all the time.. I saw at least 5 clean ups at Spirit of Hope and I was not even in the arena all that long since my hotel was just across the street!
My DD had the stomach bug on Sunday of SOH, I peeled her out of bed to compete. During jumps she threw up, held in in her mouth, then swallowed it down to do the standing handspring tuck after jumps! YUCK! But I gotta give her credit for being a fierce competitor on the mat! :)

I wonder why cheer is so throw up prone. In five years of watching gymnastics meets, I only saw one girl throw up, right after her floor routine. (Of course, I WANTED to throw up every time my D was on beam!)

(Edited to add: I've learned to not look over at the trash cans during the HS football games - seems like those guys have their head in the barrell half the time!)

I think we've had one 'accident' but she threw up in the garbage prior to competing and after .. but this was a qualifier for US Finals, and for our lil team, it was HUGE .. we went up against big name gyms (we'd be there, but none in our small town) .. so this was huge for the girls as they overcame alot to be there (no gym, practicing in elementary schools, previous owner embezzled, etc) .. so to hear that we got the 1st place bid for Finals was EX.CIT.ING!

This year our dance crew has a better routine and find out Feb. 7th if we get a bid, coach likes to go if we get 1st place bids as the competition is fierce in Vegas (where we go)

We are a small gym, too. One advantage I see being from a small gym is you and your child are not just a number. We parents have formed very close bonds with each other and with the coaches (who are the owners). We are treated as if we are part of the team, not bothersome, in-the-way parents. The kids are all incredibly close, too. Our team has heart, and tons of it. Heart matters. I love our gym and our team. My daughter has blossomed since she started going there a year ago. I couldn't be happier.

I want to add that we are from an area with many large, very state of the art gyms and cheer programs that produce amazing cheerleaders but we choose to stay in the smaller gym for all the reasons I stated above. Winning every single competition isn't the only thing that matters. I love our small gym!
I think that is where we are so very, very lucky to have the best of both worlds.

We have a sort of large gym - one location, 16 teams. And the gym is starting to make their mark on the national scene - the coed team was in the top 10 at Worlds last year.

However, we never feel like a number. We have amazing owners. We have been there 5 years and our owners always greets us by name and ask about my girls.

Also, they put way more emphasis on the performance than the win. The win is not everything, the heart and performance is. In fact, at our last parent meeting, one of the owners was warning the new parents that NCA Dallas was not going to be at all like our regional competitions. Our kids are used to winning and occasionally coming in 2nd. Won't be like that when we compete against the best of the best in the country next month. Our owners were telling us that we will be lucky if we come out with one National championship. I loved it when she told us that it was ok and that sometimes losing is actually better than winning as you learn so much.

It is so wonderful to be part of a great gym that doesn't go to any and all lengths to win. Spirit, working as a team, fun, and especially sportsmanship are the emphasis and if we win, it is a bonus. Of course, the kids work extremely hard for that win, but if they don't win, they are still praised for all the good things they did on the floor.

You can have it both ways - a large gym and a great experience that is not 100% focused on winning.

What "type" of class should I look for? Or has she already missed the boat at age 8. She would have a cow if she were in a class of 5 year olds for example.

8 is definitely not missing the boat. If you are planning on going the All Star route, there really aren't "classes." Usually in the next few months, around April, gyms start their tryouts. Usually all kids make one team or another based on age and ability.

The wonderful thing with Cheer is that there are 6 different levels of teams with each having different requirements that can be done. And then, those levels are also broken up into age groups.

So, a beginning third grader, depending on the size of the gym and the number of teams they field, would find themselves on a level 1 team with kids just a few years older and younger, all with the same level of skills. Level 1 you cannot do a back handspring and there are limits on the stunts, ie, how high you can lift and what you can do.

Allstar cheer is also year round, so fits the bill for lasting the whole school year. Tryouts are usually in the spring, practices in the summer with final teams set by late summer. Competitions start as early as October with the bulk November through March / April.

What doesn't fit your bill is that practices are usually a couple times a week.

However, many gyms also field Rec teams which usually practice August through March, don't practice quite as much and don't go to as many competitions, saving money and time. Rec Teams are a great way to try out All Star cheer.

So did the judges pick a score they thought your squad should beat?

Since they came in second to a score did they at least give them the jackets?

I don't really know how it works with scoring, I guess they have a specific score that would designate first, second, etc.

No jackets this year! And someone said they were not giving away the jackets this year, they were charging for them anyway. DD has one from last year, a too-big red and black one that says Maryland State Cheer Champs or something like that. She said it hasn't held up well (and it's kinda ugly!) :rotfl:

I was watching a competition a few weeks ago and another cheer mom showed us this one girl on another team who always throws up in her mouth every competition she goes to. She just holds it the entire time and spits it out afterwards. That mom told us it was a nerve thing and she does it every competition. We watched her at Spirit of Hope and half way through, you could see her slowing down and then you could tell she was holding it in. At the end we thought she was going to lose it but she managed to keep it in her mouth until she was done. The team has a bucket ready for her at the end of every competition! I can't imagine having to do that during every performance! Gross!

Seriously, if you throw up every time, I think you need a new activity.

I guess I'm realizing how small our gym is. Four teams (used to be 5 before they combined senior level 3 and 4.) I guess in the past they'd compete in small gym and regular competitions, this year only regular. The younger thre teams are winning every competion but the combined 3/4 isn't.

My girls have competed not feeling well, or at the start of a bug, and finished .. but never HELD their vomit, yikes! But I have to say I have seen impressive dedication in the girls, that's for sure ..

Yep our gym is like that too .. not always winning .. but the teamwork and support is a bonus .. and it is the icing when smaller gyms win over bigger gyms .. kinda like the underdog thing? Either way it's very cool and is fun ..

Today found out we get to perform at the halftime of the Portland Trail Blazers Feb. 16th .. my daughter of course is excited .. but it's during the school week! (she does H.S./college) .. so I don't really wanna take her out .. but it's a great opportunity! .. what to do .. what to do...

The younger girls got jackets for first place. And like you said are not very pretty but DGD is so proud of it.

I have to agree If DGD was throwing up at every competition we would pull her from the team. Find another sport.

What a trooper and yes, what a fierce competitor! :cool1: Congrats toyour daughter and here's hoping she has a very successful rest of season!

Thanks for this thread! I've been reading all the posts. I have 2 DDs who cheer Allstar. They are on a Jr. level 2 team.

They are supposed to compete this weekend at a Jamfest in Tulsa, OK. I'm a little worried about the weather. It is only 1 1/2 hrs. from here, so is supposed to be an easy drive, but they are predicting ice and snow. I grew up in MN so know that even a couple of inches of snow will slow things down here, but they are saying it may be up to 10 inches! Anyone else going? Any local weather reports? TIA

my girls did great at their first competition of the year. 1 of them does 2 teams, the other 3. They came in first place for every team. No grand champs though. they just can't seem to win one of those! But, it was a large confidence boost and they have a few weeks between comps to work on any of the problems.

Weather problem solved--Jamfest is rescheduled for Feb. Good thing, too. It is icing here badly. They are saying at least 1 inch of ice and at least 7 inches of snow. Last week it was 50 degrees!

We're headed to JamFest Live next weekend (2/6) in Pittsburgh. I think we are going to be missing 3 kids from our team and using "fill in" members. This has me really concerned. We have two practices left and I'm not even sure yet who is scheduled to fill in. Can anyone make me feel better about this? I'm worried :confused3

HI, I just found this thread can I join in? My dd is 4 years old and is on a special needs cheer team! She is loving it! She has her second competition this coming Saturday and she can't wait!

Here are some pictures from her last competition!

She is the blonde on the screen!
