2008 DDP so far for servers

As a WDW server, I figured I would update how things are going from my perspective, now 3 weeks into the new DDP.

First off, I have to say that almost all DDP guests are tipping me and my fellow servers at my restaurant well for good service. Yes, there are the horror stories here and there. One family (who had purchased princess gear for daughter and Mickey ears for son) left in the tip line on a $160 check not an amount, but rather a sentence saying "I am sorry would like to tip but can't afford it." Ouch. Again, so far at our restaurant this is the rare exception and not the norm.

Servers do feel extremely tacky asking guests to tip. The way it is set up, a guest must enter a tip amount before the ddp credits are swiped. If a server sees a blank, we must take the receipt back to the guest and ask for them to enter an amount if they choose. Again, very awkward and tacky. One key reason a server feels very uneasy about this (aside from general social norms) is because up until now, it was a terminable offense for a server to solicit a tip from a guest in this manner. Now it is acceptable (the server has to inform the guest how the system works and that the tip amount, unless cash, must be entered prior to swiping the card).

The biggest hassle for servers and guests is paying for a tip with big, split parties. For example, imagine a party of 12 on the ddp split between 2 tables and 2 different servers. They seat the kids at one table and adults at the other. As this is 2 families eating together with 3 rooms, 2 adults and 2 kids in each room, all heck can break loose. In this scenario, which happend in our restaurant, each of the 3 cards had to be run by each server (to get the adult credits at one table and the kid credits at the other), so 6 swipes total. The auto grat, on a split check, goes to each corresponding check. So, a visa card had to be run 6 times to cover the gratuity, which got split onto the 6 separate checks. If this was confusing to read, imagine how confusing it was for the busy server and unsuspecting guest (and the guests at those 2 servers' other tables.) A nightmare all the way around.

Again, on the whole things are good so far for the servers (not the nightmare envisioned). Luckily, the bad tricky situations and unfair tip stiffing is very minimal. :-) Nevertheless, most of our servers would like the system to revert to the old way. It is easier for all involved when it comes time to present and pay the bill.

It's still "early in the season". However, it does sound a bit better than I had imagined it might be.
No way around those logistical problems, it seems--.

Thanks for posting. Just curious, though, if the servers are vocalizing the desire for the old system to the powers that be.

Thanks for the update. It is good to hear from a server.

I am glad to hear that most customers are tipping :thumbsup2

We always try to tip every hardworking server we have in CASH! You deserve it immediately!!!!!! Thanks for posting was curious how it was working out; almost doesn't seem Disney like to put servers and guests in that ackward situation either!!!!!

Thanks for sharing. I can't wait to use the plan this summer. :cool1:

TACKY, TACKY, TACKY:sad2:

I bet they pulled this crap each time they dined.

Hopefully Karma will catch up with them. Maybe a stomach bug will put the breaks on their vacation.:wizard:

ITA! I never understand eating out and not factoring in a reasonable tip. "No one knows me here so why bother. They will never seem us again :rotfl::rotfl:" It is shameful.

I also am glad to hear that the transition is smoother than expected.

Note to self: BRING CASH FOR TIPS!!!!!!

Thank you so much for posting your experience. I know that you say that it's not been the "nightmare" everyone was expecting, but even one server getting stiffed seems one too many in my opinion. I think that the tipping changes to the DDP are just another instance of something that looks great on paper but doesn't translate in the real world. I also can't imagine how awkward it must be for you all having to discuss tips with customers. Well, hopefully the creative peeps at Disney will come up with something to make the system make more sense. Hang in there! :goodvibes

Dizserver - I have a question, is it better for us to bring cash for tipping you, or is it easier for you to swipe our cards?

Also, thank you for posting your experiences serving. It's refreshing to hear your point of view.

I just got back and every server was fantastic (with the exception of the gentleman at Yak and Yeti and I use the term gentleman loosley). I felt really bad for the servers when they had to explain the tip part. They apologized each time and once we understood it we told them there was no need to explain. Just made it a little easier.

I gave every one the 20% -- some a little more -- except the Yak and Yeti dude.

Like the OP said, it did get a little confusing with the two parties (we were two couples and an 18 month old) but we let them know ahead of time and it wasn't a problem.

Glad to hear its not as bad as most of us envisioned but to be honest i would rather pay a few extra dollars for the plan and have the tip included. If we had exceptional service (which i find we usually do at wdw) then it was so easy just to throw a few extra bucks on the table.

What i loved most was the fact that i didn't have to keep dishing out cash all week long, everything was pre-payed so i hope the "powers that be" rethink this program, imho tip inclusion is a must.

I also have the same question since we are probably going to be one of those PIA families when it comes to tipping because we are a party of 10. My parents are not on DDP (so seperate cheque) and our family of 8 is split into to resort rooms (so 2 different KTTW cards for DDP) Add to that the fact that many of our ADR's had to be made for 2 tables because of our party size so we may have more than 1 server from the sounds of it. I cash the best way for us to go as well???

This will be our first time on the plan so I'm not sure I understand everything. When we purchase the plan at DVC (for me) do we have to give our credit card number? I would prefer just to leave my tips in cash on the table each meal then having to figure out room or credit card charges.

The only difference doing the plan with DVC is that we don't need to have a base ticket, we can purchase it later than the average guest, and we pay for the plan itself when we check into the hotel and not ahead of time.

For tipping, you'll tip like the rest of the DDP users. You'll receive a bill at the end stating what the tip would be for 18% and for 20%. At that time you can either put the tip on your KTTW card (if you have charging privileges on it), a credit card, or you can write CASH on the tip line and present the server with the cash for the tip.

I believe that you could also write CASH on the tip line and give the server the cash after they run your card. However, if you need change it will cause an extra step for your server to get change for you.

This is, of course, assuming you are a party of 5 or less. If you're a party of 6 or more or using the DDE card, you'll have to pay the minimum of 18% gratuity and that will be added onto your bill.

Ditto! Please let us know which servers prefer: cash or swiping our cards. Also, thank you for the positive update. :daisy:

What server wouldnt prefer cash? They restaurant will only report 8% to the IRS letting the server net x% under the table (This goes for restaurants everywhere, not just disney)

Hey I didnt make that rule.........

I don't see why it is difficult for someone to understand......if there is a line for gratuity on a receipt.....even before the card is swiped....that you add what you would like to tip....at that time. It is still in poor taste for a server to ask for a tip. I know some places that will fire a server for soliciting a gratuity. I know, I know....but that's not Disney and things are different there.

Well, I guess I'm one of "those" people because in the past, not at Disney, if I've paid for a meal on a credit card and left a tip in cash I've never written anything on the tip line of the receipt. I've just left the tip on the table and I've never had a server ask me how I would be tipping. I can see if you are a party of 6 or more at Disney and you leave the line blank than the server will ask because it's mandatory, but honestly, I don't think that servers should be asking that if it's not a mandatory tip. I think I'd be inclined to leave less if a server seemed pushy about their tip. I realize that servers get paid less per hour because it's assumed (in the industry) they'll make some up in tips, but IMO, a server should never assume a tip is coming. I used to be a server and I understand how hard of a job it can be, but I still disagree with asking for your tip.
