2008 - C25K program :) WELCOME!!

... I am never sure when to just push through it and when to stop. :confused3 I don't mind the pain so much, I just want to avoid an actual injury at all cost! ...

Hi Maroo! I'm with you on this. I'm not sure either when I should stop or push on sometimes. I've just been doing my best to decide on my own, so far so good. For instance, yesterday my right hip was feeling pretty sore. So I decided to take the day off (it was a planned day off anyway according to the C25K, but I've been doing more than 3 times a week lately). Who knows if I REALLY needed to take the day off or if I would have been just fine doing it. :confused3 I feel like I need a trainer with me all the time to answer these questions! lol

If you're doing 2.5 miles in the week 1...you must be far more advanced than the C25k program. In week 1 you Run for 60 seconds and walk for 90 seconds for a total of 20 minutes. If you did 2.5 miles in 20 minutes that would mean you'd average an 8 minute per mile pace....even when walking. Is your treadmill set on kilometers or something instead of miles?

Hey- no I'm actually running outdoors, so no treadmill. That distance includes the 5 minute warm up and 5-10 minute cool down. I mapped it on "mapmyrun.com" and it said 2.5 miles:confused3 I have no clue what actual pace I am doing as I'm just listening to the podcast's directions. Week 1 is a 30 minute podcast and sometimes I do a little bit longer cooldown to make sure I'm loose. Maybe the mapmyrun site is off a bit?

I'm about to go out for W2D1... and it's really cold and windy outside! :( It's only in the fourties right now and supposed to reach the fifties in the next couple hours, but the rain is coming with it. Hopefully I can get the run in before the skies open up.

Happy Tuesday! Last day of March!

I did W6D2 today. I extended the jogs and shortened the walk a bit. Jogs were 15 min at 4.8 mph and walk was 2 min at 4 mph. I feel great!

And that was the last of the walking/jogging intervals for me!!! woohoo!

I hope you all are doing well! We need UPDATES from everyone!!!!! :)

Congrats, Liz! Welcome to the torturous long runs (well mostly they're just boring)

I haven't run since last Thursday due to a series of events. I am planning on going tonight - going to stick to 2.5 miles and keep at it for awhile. No reason to push myself too much now as it's just adding on distance.

W6D1 UGH! :headache:This was not a good run day! I had to walk some during the run segments and overall it was just not good! I just could not talk myself into doing the full work out and I was so disappointed in myself and knew I'd have to come here and report to you all, that was the worse part! The outside of my ankles (my normal problem spot) were so tight and achy, I just could not get that area to loosen up and I had a horrible time breathing. Geez and just three days ago I had run 20 min. without any walk breaks! Yesterday was actually supposed to be my run day but I got sidetracked in Orlando and didn't get out to get it done. It had been three days since I did my 20 min run I don't think I can let three days go by again without wogging. We flew home today from Florida and were up at 4:00am EST for our 7:00am flight...I am sure that did not help.

Great job everyone on your running accomplishments! Welcome newbies.

I guess we are doing well if we are not injured, huh! I hate to push myself. I am sure, as I get closer to the half or miss my "markers" that I will be tempted to push myself...

Yeah...I won't be getting a trainer! But maybe should look into that Team in Training concept for my first half? :confused3

Aw man! :) I had the same thing happen on Saturday...GREAT wogging and then Monday I was hurting again...

I can't figure out if it has to do with just sore muscles? Or how much or little I have been drinking? I think that may have something to do with it. If I get hydrated well, then I do better, I think...?

Could be a fluke, though.

I would be totally off if I had just gotten off an airplane!! And I never drink enough when I travel, either. So maybe it was a hydration issue? :confused3

I don't know...I am certainly not the expert!! :rotfl:

Can I join this thread?

I am 33, in okay shape, do kickboxing twice a week and play ice hockey. I have lost about 40 lbs in the last 2 years, and need to lose 20-30 more.

But, I committed to do the princess half next year (if they have it) with some fellow WISHers and I need to start training for it, I guess. Plus I am going up to NJ in 3 weeks to do the Race for the Cure with one of the same group.

I started yesterday with W3D1, on the recommendation of a friend, as my cardio is pretty good. It was hard but not impossible, and I went home and did 30 day shred after. Kickboxing today at lunch, and I am kind of sore but not awful... I am planning on day 2 tomorrow.

I am really scared of week 5. 20 min!

Also, my friend told about podcasts that tell you when to stop and start? Need to find them...

Same thing for me! I was doing so well and then yesterday was just horrible. I ran for 2 miles and then gave up (was supposed to do 2.5) so I didn't hurt myself or whatnot. Oh well, try again thursday

First off, http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/page4/page4.html
...is where you can find the podcasts. You can also go onto iTunes and type in C25k and look for Robert Ullrey's. They're free and worked amazingly well for me.

Secondly, the program prepares you to run for the 20 minutes...if you're doing all that other stuff you should be completely fine doing a 20 minute run. Just remember, it's not really a 20 minute run....it's a 20 minute jog. Take your time and concentrate on keeping your breathing under control. Find some place to run outside if you can because I'm MUCH MUCH less likely to stop running outside than I am on the treadmill. When I'm outside I am constantly looking around and watching people drive by or what not so it keeps your mind off what you're actually doing. When I'm on the treadmill it's like "oh, yep I'm running at exactly 5.34 mph. There should be another little dot that pops up indicating that I've gone .23 miles, oh yep, there it is!" Running on the treadmill for long runs annoys me. It's great for intervals, but I just can't stand it for anything more than a warm up before lifting.

You'll do fine on the 20 minute run! I promise! Have some confidence and enjoy it! You'll feel amazing when you're done...okay not maybe RIGHT when you're done...but after you shower and stuff ;)

fall08CP~I hope you survived the cold and wind!

Tiffany~Thanks! Yeah, no more walking for me, besides the warmup. Although I am going to switch up my jogging speed during my jogs so I will still do intervals of a sort.

Vicki~ You had a rough day, but you'll bounce back. I bet your travelling and messed up sleep was a big part of it. I know that would make it harder for me.

Maroo~I've been reading about Team in Training too. I want to look at all the possibilities when it comes to training for my first ever half. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet.

Kat~Welcome! :) I was so scared of that week 5 20 minute jog too!! I really didn't think I was ready for it when it came upon me. But then I realized I needed to slow down, I was jogging too fast yet for me...needed to work my way up more gradually which is what I'm doing now. You can do it!! Especially since you must be in pretty good shape already. I was a true couch potato before starting this! lol

DisneyDayTripper~You crack me up with your torturous treadmill talk. lol You are right though!

Well today I did a W6D2.5 workout lol... A quick warmup walk, then jogged for 20 minutes with 5 minute intervals at 5, 4.5, 4.8 and 5 again, then a short cool down walk. W6D3 is planned for tomorrow. I want to do the entire 25 minutes at 4.8mph or higher....we'll see though.

Oh, happy April! :umbrella:

Thanks for the welcome!!

I am really grateful for the podcast link. I did day 1 on Monday with no music (forgot my headphones) and just watched the darn treadmill clock tick by... *yawn*. It wasn't even so much hard as BORING.

I wish I could run outside but it won't stop freaking raining here!! Also, I have to admit, I am not intimidated by hockey or the gym, or really most things, but running outside is a level of putting myself out there that I just can't get past. :confused3

Liz, I need to start training for my half probably sometime later this year. I am interested to read what you learn about it! I just want to not be swept, I am not all that concerned about time.

What is a good speed? I did 4 for the walk, and 4.5 for the run parts? I don't think that is strictly the 200/400 yds that they say you are supposed to do.

Sorry, I am TOTALLY a newbie at this, and I know my questions have likely been answered over and over....

Welcome! I somehow missed your post earlier!

It sounds like you are definitely on the right track! I am going to be doing the half in 09, too! And my goal is not to be swept! I am leaning toward joining a Team in Training team in August to prepare for my first one. Because I think I need that accountability (you know, real people to run with :lmao:) This site is an AWESOME motivator, as I feel like I have to come back and report...

For example...I slept in this morning instead of going to walk/run. I know, I know. Bad Maroo, Bad!

So...that is my confession for the day! I read a long TR yesterday about the half marathon and while it was inspiring, it was also daunting. The task of walking/running 13.1 miles seems way to long right now...as I am struggling to do 3 in the right pace.

At first I was self-conscious about it as well, but after awhile you just forget what other people think. There are so many benefits of running that I think they heavily outweigh the negatives. My MIL runs marathons and can run much faster than I and she's had teenagers make fun of her while she was running and stuff so it happens to all runners not just those who don't run a 4 minute mile.

Hi everyone, nice to see everyone keeps plugging away. We did Week 2 day 2 today and it wasn't bad at all, much easier than day 1 and in the rain. I signed our team up for the Race for the Cure in DC, so now we really have to stick with it. We found out the day after I signed up that a friend of ours is losing her battle with breast cancer so the run will be even more meaningful.

fall08CP~I hope you survived the cold and wind!

Thanks!

Funny story actually.. So I was doing my W2D1 run and it was getting cloudy so I decided to run on roads really close to my house rather than do my usual run out to the lake and back. There is a graveyard about three blocks from my house and it's pretty big so I decided to run through there.. morbid I guess but kind of interesting actually. So then I see a side road that I had never seen before. Brilliant me decided to check it out and run down. So I'm going for a couple of run/walk segments... still hoping the clouds hold out... and I realize that there are no crossroads on this weird little road, but there is a stop sign way down at the end, and I was sure that if I made it there I could figure out where I was. Before I know it, the cross-street at the stop sign says 24th street... meaning I've run 16 blocks from home:scared1:
So now not only am I lost, but I'm done 5 of my 6 intervals and 16 blocks from home. If you think of it as a rectangle I have to walk four blocks in width over, then 12 blocks deep.. ugh! By the time I have done the four blocks over my music is done and I realize I'm in a scary part of town. Rather than go back down the road I came from, I decided to go down another one and realize there are no sidewalks. Long story short, I was gone for 45 minutes and it started raining right after I got home.

Kat~Don't worry about asking any questions... Although this thread began over a year ago, many of us are new to it. I know I am so I haven't heard the questions over and over! :)

As for speed, I had no idea what a good speed was when I first started. I think for the first week I was only jogging at 4 and walking at 3! Then I went up from there and was jogging at 5 for a few weeks (and walking at 4). But then as I said before that 20 minute run in week 5 was daunting to me, and I realized that 5mph was simply too fast.

So now, I jog at anywhere from 4.5 to 5. It is amazing to me the difference I feel between those speeds. I jogged for over 40 minutes at 4.5! And yet I can only do 5-7 minutes at 5?! I just never knew there was such a huge difference there. I wonder if I am normal in that regard?! It's just so surprising to me.

Maroo~I know exactly what you mean about reading that TR. I have done the same thing! I'll read one and be inspired, yet scared. I actually stopped reading them lately as I REALLY want to register for the half soon and I don't need anything scaring me off. lol

DisneyDayTripper~Aw, that makes me sad to think of your MIL being made fun of by some dumb teenagers. :sad2: She sounds like an amazing runner! I'm so impressed by people, especially older people, who run so well.

cwnhokie~That's great week 2 is going well for you! That's great you're doing that race too. I'm so, so sorry about your friend.

cwnhokie - so sorry about your friend. My WISH friend that I am going to do NJ Kormen with with at end of the month... her mother has been fighting it for years and is going through another round this year, so it means something to her (and hence to me, as she is dear to me). I am going to help support her, her mom, and everyone else battling.

liz - thanks for the support!!

maroo - are you doing the Jan half?

I don't have a choice, I think my WISH friends would come down here and physically DRAG me to the princess half if I didn't show up. I met them on another thread here, and a few of us met up for a girls trip last December and really hit it off.

I am off to do W2D3, podcast is on my sansa, and I remembered my headphones! :yay:

fall08CP~Oh no!! LOL! What an adventure you went on, huh?! :scared1:
Well at least you got a good workout, and it didn't rain on you, right?! :thumbsup2

Kat~Hope the workout is going well right now! :)

Hi all!

Cwnhokie – Sorry to hear about your friend – I know what you are going through, I had a good friend who lost her battle with breast cancer 7 years ago. We all did the Susan B Korman walk when we thought she was ‘cured’. I miss her like crazy! I have always participated in the walk while living in Denver but since moving to CA I have yet to get organized and sign up but that is on my to-do list.

Maroo – I was lazy on Monday so I am with ya! It helps to have someone to keep me accountable. That is so awesome that you are committed to running the half!

Kat – When I first started the C25K I was embarrassed to be running outside but I just could not bring myself to do the treadmill…it bores me to death so I would wait until it was dark and go run. I am lucky in that I live where it is still warm enough and safe to run outside in the dark but that is the only way I think I could have started! I’ve graduated to running now in daylight and I’ve learned not to really care what others think, but I know it is hard.

Fall08cp – Funny story and thanks for sharing. I guess you just have to keep running when you are not familiar with the area…maybe I should try to find an area without cross streets...no turning back! :)

Liz – You are doing great…keep it up and you’ll be running that half in no time!

Tiffany – I am thinking about going out again today to try W6D1…I am determined to get past yesterday. I looked back on my runners log and I had a day or two like yesterday in W3 so I am hoping it was just a minor set back!

DisneyDayTripper~Aw, that makes me sad to think of your MIL being made fun of by some dumb teenagers. :sad2: She sounds like an amazing runner! I'm so impressed by people, especially older people, who run so well.

Well it was a cold day and she was running like 13 miles or something crazy and wasn't have the greatest run and all of a sudden the kids pulled up in the pickup truck and started laughing at her and then threw snowballs at her...she always carries mace, but then found out that mace goes bad when you shake it (and she had been running with it in her hand for like 2 years). So she went to squirt it to test it and it drizzled out of the can and she felt really silly. Now she always runs with pepper spray.

Also...I'll keep the "I'm so impressed by people, especially older people, who run so well" comment away from my MIL :) She just turned 41...(DW and I are 23 and 21)...so she's not "old"...although she does go to bed during the summer before the sun goes down. :rotfl2:

Oh wow! I feel really old now! :lmao: I am a little older than your MIL but I am never in bed or asleep before 11pm or later year round!!! Hehe! I have an almost 20 year old daughter!

Anyway - this 'old' woman did it tonight! :upsidedow I finished W6D1...I was determined to get back out there after yesterday and prove to myself that I can do this. I was frustrated after finishing the 20min run and then be able to get through 5 min./8 min. runs! It is very much a mental game! I am just a couple of days behind my schedule but that's okay as long as I do it! :yay:
