2008 - C25K program :) WELCOME!!

Maybe you need to eat a little before your workout maybe part of a Cliff Bar or something similar?

I usually have a granola bar or a piece of fruit before running - definitely something - and drink water during. I have been battling sinus issues so maybe that's it. It's not a huge deal - just if I could fix it I would want to, kwim?

Way to go on finishing up the week! Amazing how your body just gets better at stuff, huh?

Hi ladies :)

I did W3D1 this morning. I wasn't as into it today, but I did it! I was a bit nervous about the 3 minute runs, but they weren't bad. I thought of them as two 90 second runs and that made it easier. lol I went 2.17 miles in 30 minutes.

Vicki, how was Disneyland? That's neat you live so close to it.

I did it! W3D1 I was a little concerned with running 3 min. but it was actually not bad at all! The first 90 seconds run segment went by so quickly and I did well during the 3 min. run segments. When I finished the second set of 3 min. intervals I was not ready to stop so I walked for a while and then did two more 90 second intervals for a total of 40 min. and 2.5 miles! This running thing is a huge mental game as I had almost convinced myself that I would have a really hard time with the 3 mins. of running but I did fine. We'll see what I am saying over the next couple of weeks as it really seems to ramp up but for now I am happy with my progress and amazed at how I am doing compared to just a week ago.

Disneyland was fun. We had a very relaxing day and didn't push it but got a lot done. We go often enough that if a line is too long or we can't get fast passes that work with what we are doing we go onto something else. That is such a change for me now that I live within an hours drive of a Disney park...before I was comando Vicki at Disney World and Disneyland. :scared1: I feel very fortunate to live this close now. :cloud9:

I hope everyone has a great week!

I did my 2nd 28-min run last night. I did not want to go and it was TOUGH to keep going the entire time - blah. But I made it and technically have one more day before I move on. I may repeat tho, we'll see. The nice thing about the longer runs is you don't have to decide ahead of time if you are going to repeat. If I get to x minutes I can then push myself to go to the next one - it's just a couple more minutes!

I'm doing my last 28 minute run tonight. Something that works for me is a quote I read that says something like...when you ask yourself if you can go further, the answer is usually yes.

Hi all, I did W3D2 this morning. I went a little farther than last time: 2.25 miles in 30 minutes. I did one of the runs for 4 minutes. I think I'll be ready for the 5 minute ones next week, and even the 8 minute ones after that. Now that 20 minute one at the end of week 5, I have no idea how I'll be ready for that! Seems like quite a jump in time.

Vicki, your relaxing DL day sounded great. I've never been there, but definitely want to!

Tiffany, that does sound nice about only adding minutes now. You can push yourself more if you want to each time. I can't wait to get there!!

ImMarcik, I totally agree with that quote! :thumbsup2

Completed W3W2 last night. It was a little more difficult than D1 but I finished and didn't do any extra 90 sec. intervals. I wasn't really into it and my hip joints and ankles were really stiff. I couldn't seem to get them to loosen up. Today I feel fine was wondering if I would be sore but I'm not. I did run 30 seconds longer on my last 3 min. jog - I was going to try for 4 min. but didn't have the motivation. Hopefully tomorrow's workout will be better!:worship:

Hope all of you are having a great day!

I did a 5K today!! :teeth: Ok, not an official one, but on my treadmill anyway!

I wanted to see how long it would take me to do one, so I just kept doing the intervals until I got to it. It took me exactly 40 minutes. One of my runs was 5 minutes woohoo!

I'm going to do atleast 3.1 miles everytime I'm able to (I don't always have the time to do more than 30 minutes) from now on. It makes me feel better to be going the distance I'm training for, and then working on running more and more of it and getting my time down.

I'm ready for week 4!!!! :cool1:

Vicki, I hope today went better for you!!

2.28 miles in 30 min
3.2 miles in 40 min
3.25 miles in 44 min

I wish I could cover that much ground! My *goal* is 3 miles in 40min... but right now i'm at 2.05 in 28 so I need to speed it up a little. That's what I get for having short legs

Tiffany, I do have long legs (I am 5' 8.25" tall) however it seems like my stride is not that much bigger compared to people shorter than me.

I just realized that my times are off somehow. :confused3 I took them out because now I'm not remembering exactly what they were! Oh well. bring on Sunday!! :)

I'm finally feeling better and I'm going to try to get back to it by Monday. I can't wait for the weather to be nice so I can just go out with DS in the stroller. I cancelled my gym membership the other day because I just couldn't justify the expensive when I keep missing weeks at a time between me and all the kids being sick. I've missed a month and a half so I'll probably need to start from scratch again. But I really want to do it!

Happy Friday everyone! I am so glad it is Friday; I've had a crazy week. My college age daughter and her roommate had planned to stay with us for one night, Sunday, when they left on Monday they had a car accident about 20 miles from our house (thankfully they weren't hurt, only sore) the car was not drivable. So it turned into my daughter staying with us all week and she'll be here until Sunday (which I love because I don't get to see her often!) and a trip to the airport so her roommate could fly back to PHX. My parents came in yesterday, they were supposed to come in today, and they will be here until next Wed.

Through all of the unexpected craziness this week I was determined to stay with the program and I did! I finished W3D3 yesterday afternoon. This week was not as bad as I had thought it would be. Yesterday was a bit of a challenge though, I wanted to go out during lunch and wog after I found out my parents would be here a day early and that was fine until I forgot to do my asthma inhaler and I really could tell the difference. I had a lot of trouble breathing but I was determined to complete it. I now have an inhaler in my car, my BF's car, my backpacks, every place I can think that I might need it!

I am going to try to get out in the morning and repeat one more day of W3 and then start W4D1 on Monday. I don't think I'm quite ready to take on the challenge of W4 tomorrow but I don't want to take two days off, I've been doing the program every other day and advancing to the next week right after the 3rd work out.

cwnhokie - Glad you are feeling better and don't worry about starting over at least you are doing it!

Liz - That is a great idea to do a 5K distance. I'm sure doing that gave you the confidence that you can do it, regardless if you do a combination of running and walking. I think I'll try that maybe next weekend.

Tiffany - I really have no idea how fast I am wogging but I will be happy to finish the 5K that I plan to do in April between 30 - 45 min. I would rather do the 30 min. but we shall see!

Sorry this turned into a novel...I hope everyone has a great weekend and happy running!

cwnhokie, That's great you're feeling better and want to start up again! You can do it!! :thumbsup2 Keep us posted!

Vicki, I'm sorry about your dd's accident. That's good she wasn't injured!
That's so great you finished your workout even though your asthma was acting up!! Way to go!
I would rather do my workouts every other day. I'm always anxious for my next workout, so those 2 days feel too long. But I kinda have to stick with the Sun/Tues/Thurs due to our schedule...

Hi guys! I would like to join a c25k group on Disboards...is this the right place? I am using the Running for Mortals Walk/Run for 5k program and will be starting week 2 tomorrow if I can hack it. If not, I may repeat week 1 again! I would love to be able to check in weekly and get some advice and inspiration from others in the same boat! My dream is to do the Princess 1/2 Marathon one day!

Hi Leigh! :) We'd love to have you join us here!!

I just started the couch to 5K a few weeks ago (I begin week 4 tomorrow). I'm planning my first ever race, a 5K, for this May, and then my longterm hope is to do the WDW half next January. I have to decide soon-ish on that since it is 70% full as of now...

Anyway, good luck and keep us posted! :thumbsup2

Phew! Well today was the start of week 4 for me, and it was HARD. I wasn't able to complete it as written.

At the second 90 second walk I had to keep walking as I was still breathing very hard and knew I wasn't ready to do the next 5 minute run.

And then a little later I was running and simply could not catch my breath. I had to slow to the walk, and then slow down even more (to 3mph) and even then I was still having a very hard time. I started to panic a bit and was a few more seconds away from hopping off the treadmill and getting my dh. But I managed to calm myself down, catch my breath and speed back up again to jogging.

I kept going until 3.1 miles and it took me 42 minutes.

Oh and oddly enough, my right inner ear started hurting pretty bad, sharp pain, towards the end of my workout?! It's not like I'm outside in cold weather, I'm in my house. So I don't know why that happened, it went away about 10-15 minutes after I was all done. My heart does pump so hard that it makes my ears actually pressurize sometimes (does that happen to anyone else??) so maybe that was part of it. Strange!

Hi Liz - Wow not sure what is with your ear pain! And sorry to hear about you having difficulty breathing. :scared1: I am glad you were able to recover your breath and finish your workout. I hope W4D2 is a better experience for you!

I am now very nervous for tomorrow which will be W4D1 for me! :scared1: I had a really difficult time yesterday...I had officially finished W3 on Thurs. but I like to run every other day and I didn’t feel like starting W4 until Mon. so I did another day of W3 yesterday morning. I went out thinking this will be a piece of cake I had already finished 3 days, right? – I was so wrong! It was harder than the first day of W3! I have no idea why but I was barely able to finish the 3 min. runs and I really had hoped to run over the 3 min. maybe even try for 4 min. but there was no way! I even made sure to do my inhaler before leaving the house but I still had a hard time breathing! I did finish and ran the entire 3 min. runs but I was fighting with myself the entire time. I was a bit frustrated but I am planning to start W4D1 tomorrow. I am nervous about the 5 min. of running after yesterday’s experience but I’m trying to be optimistic!

Hi Leigh and welcome...it's never to late to start and join us! I will be starting W4D1 tomorrow and I am hoping so much that I can make it!! I was very encouraged that each week was seeming to get easier and then I had a frustrating wog yesterday. I am determined to stick with this even if I have to go back and do W3 for a while longer. Good luck and please come here as often as needed!

Hey guys! I have a quick question:

What C25K program are you all referring to?? Is it the Marathon for Mortals program? I have the Running for Mortals book instead and I wonder if my plans are the same or different from y'alls...can anyone share the basics of the plan w/ me?

Last week I did week 1 in my book which was walk 3min and run 1min for 6 cycles. My week 2 tells me to do the same again so today I did that again. Also, I have a new phone (it's the T-mobile G1 which is similar to an Iphone) and it has a new app on it called CardioTrainer. It is SO cool! It uses my phone's GPS and tracks how far I run and times it! It gave me my slowest rate/fastest rate/average rate and so on. I was wondering what a good walk/run rate is for a 5k. Any advice? Thanks so much for letting me be a part of your group!

Hi Leigh - I think that the C25K is different then the Running for Mortals - Here's the link to a site that provides the details for the C25K program.

Your Iphone sounds really cool however I have Verizon and love their service so unless they get anything similar to an Iphone I'm out of luck for your CardioTrainer. :sad2:
As for a good time for a walk/run for a 5K I am not really sure. I've looked online at the results for a 5K that I want to do in April and it is divided into age groups so if you'd like I can look up your age group and let you know what the result range was for that race last year. Or maybe someone here can give us that info.

I was bummed out by my rough workout yesterday and was really anxious to get back on the treadmill and try again...so I went for it again today. And it was MUCH better!! No breathing issues, no ear pain. I completed it as written, and then continued the intervals until I did my 3.1 miles. It took me 40m40s this time. I'm going to do my regular Tuesday workout tomorrow too, then off Wed.

I tell ya, when it gets harder it just makes me more determined to DO IT.

Vicki, I hope your week 4 starts off well!

Leigh, that app sounds cool. I have an iPhone so I wonder if I could get it, or something like it.

I don't know about the walk/run rate for a 5K... I am just doing what I can do for now. My goal for now is to just get my 5K time steadily under 40 minutes.
