2007-2008 cheer parent thread

Well, dd made a decision about college. She opted for the school she likes best, even though she didn't make the cheer team. She'll try again in the fall...but I suspecct her cheerleading career is over, and that's making me very sad.

She should look into a part time job as a coach. Our All Star team has a couple of college age coaches and the kids love them. They have the experience, the great attitudes and the cool, hip vibe. Often the head coach will leave the room (when a practice isn't going well) and has the younger assist coach try to get the girls motivated.

or, how about volunteering for a local Pop Warner or Pee Wee football cheer team. These are often coached by parents with little to no experience. I won't let my girls do any intermediate stunts unless they have a real coach (too dangerous) this past year their head coach (a mom) was more like the team mother and the assist coach (college girl) was the real coach.

I won't let them do any advanced stunting, too dangerous on the football field and the school gyms with no mats.

I may suggest that to her...

DD plans to be an elementary school teacher. She'll have to apply to the Education Department in her sophomore year, and she'll have to submit a portfolio of her work with children. She's got a few activities going right now, but coaching a cheer team would be something unique to add to the portfolio.

Where is everyone? Busy with tryouts? We're done with tryouts here :) Although, my daughter's gym doesn't require returning cheerleaders to attend tryouts we just had to sit and wait to find out what team she would be placed on after everyone else tried out. Right now she's on Youth 2 but that could change by the end of the summer. I'm happy with her placement as I feel she has the most potential for growth there! How bout everyone else????

That's great for Ry!!! I suspect another successful season for her and her team.

Stephanie is suppose to tryout but they are next weekend and it is her Jr. Prom. Also, the ortho wants her to 'rest' her ankle. Not 'rest' her ankle like she has been these past few months...............REALLY rest it. Her coaches are totally fine with it and actually think it is best so she will be placed on a team. I am anticipating the same level team. There are quite a few boys that have maxed out with age so not sure if it will be large or small or what!! Have to wait to see who shows up!!

Hope everyone is doing well............we will need to start a new season thread soon!!

Thanks Rosemary! I hope it's another successful one! It sure does make it a lot more fun LOL!

I hope you can keep Stephanie "down"!!!

Wow!! Results came out for dd's gym for tryouts. I went in today for a private. Dang!! Those are some vicious mothers.........LOL>:lmao: Nothing about dd as she is on a lower level, but the things I heard........WOW!!:rotfl2: Thems some mean mamas!!

We are so lucky to be at a gym where everyone is genuinely nice! I hear horror stories all the time and I think the atmosphere at our gym is definitely NOT the norm. We have a LOT of new kids coming in this year from another gym and the gym they are coming from is filled with "Drama Mamas"! All I have to say is they better check their attitudes at the door LOL!!!

Been there.............seen it...............now at a new gym and it is not like that!!! Yahooo!!! Some of those mom's (and dad's) are soooooooooo brutle!!

Where is your gym Mom21?

DD#1 found out today she made varsity for both football and basketball!:cheer2: Her best friends didn't fare as well, though. One didn't make any squad (she had only circled varsity on her forms though; if you didn't circle JV they didn't put you on it). Another only made JV basketball. One only tried out for football and didn't make it. Of her best buddies one made varsity basketball. I told her this will show how much she actually likes cheering other than just socializing, because for football she knows and likes all of the girls, but isn't really close with any of them like she was with these other girls. I hear a couple of the moms are heading into school on Monday, so I can only hope the coaches have the point sheets to back up their placements.
She also said she's the only varsity football who doesn't tumble! But her dancing, facials and volume must have outweighed that.
The coach did say something to her. She said she noticed during an open gym that rather than work on her own dance or cheer, DD spent 45 minutes helping an incoming freshman girl fix up her own routines, and that's the kind of girl she wants on the squad.:goodvibes

Congratulations to your DD Robin!!! She must be so excited. Stephanie's high school team is holding tryouts in a few weeks and she is excited to be able to help in the decision of who makes the team this year. She is excited for her last year of hs cheering. She cheers for fall season which includes all football games and home soccer games.

We have to cut our normal 2 week Disney summer vacation down to one week this summer becuase she will be holding captain practices in August!! UGH!! But it only comes once so at least one week is better than none!!

There is a cheer program on E! now. It is going to be on again tomorrow at 3 CST.

Looking forward to hearing great success stories from your Youth2 team.

Phew, so glad our gym doesn't tolerate that! We too have heard the stories so :grouphug:

Good luck to your daughter!

Congrats to your daughter. And what a wonderful mentor! I would hope that is the kind of athlete any coach worth their salt would want.

Congrats to you for raising such a great kid.

Congrats all around.

DD has decided to take tumbling lessons this summer and sharpen her skills. She hopes to be able to try out for the college team again in the fall.

But I did remind her that she's going to college get an education and to become a teacher, and as much as she likes cheerleading, it won't be the end of the world if she doesn't make the team. She can always teach the cheerleading session at the day camp where she works, and someday she can coach a high school cheer team if she likes.

Well, I can officially join the thread now. I am a (soon to be broke) mother of two little All Stars. DDs 8 and 5 are so excited. They had their first practice today. I felt bad for DD8. She was so looking forward to it. She has chronic stomach problems and tested positive for the H Pylori bacteria and didn't respond to treatment. She is scheduled for an endoscopy on Tuesday and she is usually able to ignore the pain. But today she was hurting so badly she couldn't half participate in practice.

Welcome to our thread donnajon!!! and the wonderful and stressful world of allstar cheering!!!

Any thoughts on when we should start the new thread? and what shall we call it?

I am actually enjoying not having to go to the gym!!! LOL!! I have been so busy with my other DD's and soccer, lacrosse and softball games and practices and now coming up, jr. prom and sr prom!! UGH!! Stephanie may try to tumble Wednesday night!! NOt sure though.........:cheer2:

Why don't you create it now so we can get started on the 2008 - 2009 season :cheer2:

We could just continue this thread title, but update the dates, ie:
2008 - 2009 Cheer Parent Thread

If you create it, put a link here so we can go over and check-in & subscribe!

Hope Stephanie's ankle is doing well!

We start summer league swim today with our 2 sons. However, it is about 50 degrees, rainy and windchill cold. It is going to be one frigid dive into that pool. Luckily DS will be at State (HS) this afternoon and it is an indoor pool, so has a pass for the summer league practice. I hope we see summer, let alone spring sometime soon here in Colorado. At our younger son's Lacrosse game last weekend, we were in ski jackets and wrapped in blankets. :scared1:

There are some great people here. I have learned so much about cheer from the other parents here!

I will start the new thread but not sure how to put a link to it!!! UGH!!

I am quite limited with the computer.

So, please pass the word that the new thread will be titled:

2008-2009 Cheer Parent Thread

Hopefully the word will get out that we have moved and all of us will be on the same page!!!!
