2007-2008 cheer parent thread

Would that be the Huron Co. fair? My DD loves watching the cheer competition at the fair! We have a display set up at the fair for our business so our dd's get a little bored spending so much time at the fair. But cheer day is youngest DD's favorite day! She makes sure I take her over to watch the cheer competition!:cheer2:

Maybe we'll get to see your little kiddos cheer!:thumbsup2

It is the Huron County fair! Small world the DIS is. I am sure you will see my kids. I am sure my son is the only boy in the little ones.

Now how cool is THAT!?:cool1: I'll be sure to tell DD that there are Dis-ers down there cheering! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

If you want to do a mini meet at the Huron Co. fair, stop by the Franklin Monument display in the heritage area. DH and I will be there allllllllll week!:thumbsup2

I just might have to stop by. Just don't expect too much from us. We just started practice last week. We normally practice for months before we compete but since we are in Willard it was too close to pass up.

We are a bit different too. My daughter is starting her third year on a special needs cheer team that is part of the Cheer Central Suns in CO.

This is the website for the Cheer Central Suns:

This is a video about the Special Needs Team:

DD's team cheers in 3 in-state competitions, including state and then this past spring, for the first time, they joined the rest of the gym at Nationals in Anaheim. And they were one of the 4 teams from our gym bringing home a National Title! :cheer2:
And here is a youtube video of the kids at Nationals:

We have just been told that we will be going to Nationals again this year, but the destination won't be revealed until September. Our gym usually alternates coasts, so with 2007 being in Anaheim, we have our fingers crossed that we will be going to Orlando in March '08. I am so confident that I have already booked the Portofino for a week before the competition :teeth:

DD loves being part of the Cheer Community and part of the Suns. She took a picture of the back of her National Champion Hoodie and uses it for her screen saver on her cell phone :)

Although I do have to agree that the wallet is not as happy. With three kids doing almost every kind of sport, cheer has to be one of the most expensive. I never thought anything could be more expensive than horseshowing, but cheer has it topped!

Amazing video!! Loved watching this.

DD has been cheering since she was 5, she will be 18 in a few months. She cheers varsity football, varsity basketball and has been cheering for the varisty competitive team since her freshman year. The past two years, they competed at Nationals in Disney and both times, made it to finals. Looking forward to another year!!

WOW the Senior coed video is AWESOME!! Great creative stunts!!!!!!!:thumbsup2

I know I love seeing them perform. My dad goes to my DD's cheer competitions to see my DD and the Senior coed. :rotfl2:

So happy to see a cheer parent thread! My DD9 is cheering on a youth level 2 team this season. It is her second year, as well as the second year for the gym. It's still fairly small, but growing fast.

We had no idea we would enjoy competitive cheer so much...even DH who was not so excited about the idea at first. Can't wait for our season to start in October! :)

O.k. so I have a question for all of you cheer parents to help settle a disagreement between me and DH. Do you all just do your regular practice or do your children do private lessons or tumbling classes on top of the cheer practice?

We do a 1 hr private once a week for tumble!! Then they practice with the team 2 times a week 2 hours a day.

My DD12 in on a Youth 2 team and a Senior 3/4 team. She is also on an AYF Jr Midget football cheer team. She practices with the teams and also has an one hour private lesson once a week to work on tumbling and stunting.:cheer2:

Last year we did 30 min of privates once a week, but she did not seem to accomplish anything so we pulled her out. Well now, she is much stronger and I think that lessons will help and our gym starts a 5 week Excel class today it is every Tuesday for 1 hour and it is much cheaper (i mean more than 1/2 less) than private lessons and there are only about 3-4 girls in the class.

We have registered her, but DH thinks she should get all of her training at cheer practice. But I say, there is not enough time in cheer practice to perfect the cheer as well as learn new tumbling. I guess we will see how the next 5 weeks go.

DD has cheer practice twice a week (2 hours one night, 1 1/2 the other), and also takes an hour long tumbling class. At our gym, all level 2's or above are required to have an additional tumbling class. Throw in her practice for the jr. hip hop team, and we are at the gym 4 days a week. Doesn't leave much time for anything else...good thing she likes it so much!

That's us! My dd will be at the gym 5 nights a week once Football starts. She is there 5 hrs one night and 4 another. The other nights are just 2 hrs. She loves it. It is the only extracurricular she has enjoyed. As long as her grades stay A's and B's, I'll let her continue this crazy schedule.

We practice 3X a week 2 hours each. Pocket book doesn't really allow private or group tumbling!

WOW!! What level are you teams?? I bet they are AWESOME with that practice schedule!!!!

Well, they only started this past Jan. My DD is on the Jr 3 team (there is a SR team also). Their first competion was in March. Without being biased, I have to say they did fantastic, for only being together for 3 mos. Then came May, a comp at Hershey and they went up a level in "2 weeks". Half of the team completed their back handspring and again, they looked awesome!! Now they held another tryout when school ended (all are accepted) and were able to make a Jr 1, Jr 3 and a Sr 4 team. So far so good!!

The BEST thing I get out of this is to see my daughter on that stage with the biggest smile she can have. There are few words to explain the feeling of gratification (I'm sure that you have been there too!)

DD (special needs team) practices 1x per week for 2 hours and they are highly encouraged to enroll in one of the extra tumbling classes (our kids are welcome in all the regular classes). Many also do privates. Two of the girls now have their back handsprings and others who don't have physical limitations are working on them.

For the regular teams, I would say that most do some level of privates or extra tumbling classes.
