Happy belated Birthday Gary!!! ​

Sorry I was late on posting birthday wishes but we have been a bit busy the last few days.
Nick's Boy Scout Troop marches in the town parade and also runs a concession stand at the commons so it was a long day for us. It also ended up a very rainy day. Jeff & I helped set up the consession stand while Nick was home showering and cleaning his room. We ran home grabbed Nick to go walk in the parade and once he was done with that he worked his shift at the stand.
After that we went to my parents house for a late lunch/early dinner. Nick slept over my parents house so that Jeff & I could go help with the breakdown of the stand and bring the stuff to the church. Well we get back to the commons and the firework were cancelled till the 5th due to weather so we closed up the stand just to have to go back the next night and do it all again.
Luckily the weather the next day was much better so Nick worked the concession stand again and we saw the fireworks. One of the other moms brought Nick to my parents house afterthe fireworks so that Jeff & I could help breakdown the stand and get everything back to the church and put away. Needless to say we didn't get home till 11:30pm and yesterday I was just tired!!


Lily - Nick wants to to do certain Eagle required merit badges but we have to see what will be offered and go from there. Nick does have his eye on making Eagle Scout so we will have to see.

Julie - That's so Awesome that the chips were mentioned in the NY Times!! I enjoyed reading the article and the quote from the lady from Texas made me laugh.

I hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July, and I can't wait to see some of you in a few days at CP!

I was thinking we'd probably have the exact opposite this time, with heat index's in the 100's. But, looking at the forecast right now, it's dry and in the upper 70's. Perfect amusement park weather.




I also think there might be a car or two in that parking lot behind us.

One thing that occurs quite frequently in the CP parking lot is TAILGATE LUNCHES. We usually pack a small cooler and run out and eat lunch in the car. I have seen large family groups that look like they are tailgating before a football game with quite a spread....

We will be bringing our Large cooler - just in case

only a few more days!!!!!

We're off tomorrow morning to the Museum of Science & Industry. Yep, I know, we live here and should be able to make it downtown other times, but it just doesn't happen. Cameron wants to show us the train museum and I want to see the special CSI Crime Lab exhibit.

I think we are leaving here on Tuesday morning, heading to Toledo. The "boys" want to try and find a hot dog place from M*A*S*H, I forget the name of it right now. We'll find someplace to stay Tuesday night, and then Wednesday we're heading over to the African Safari Wild Life Park. We'll see where we end up on Wednesday night.

I can't wait to see everyone Thursday & Friday.

Tina, give me a ring when you get in, we won't arrive until Saturday morning sometime but who knows if Casey will want to go sooner.

Tomorrow is my first day as a Publix associate (employee). They're trying to get as many consultants to roll and the offer was better than last summer's.

As the siren sounds its eerie wail, I look down into the eyes of my friend Geno as he grasps my hand.

And the memories flood in.

I remember him as a young teammate on my senior league team 34 years ago. I remember him coming to church driving his new Starsky and Hutch car. He was an excellent trombone player who was in a very popular local band in the late 70's. I remember him serving pancake breakfasts at the Fire Station, asking when I was going to join and then the smile on his face the night I did. We played softball for years all over the state of Illinois and even into Indiana. We mended each others wounds and laughed at each other when we made an error. I remember way too many nights when we sat in a bar and drank more than we should have. I cherish the memories of him as a groomsman when I married my beloved wife. I shared his joy when he and his wife had two handsome young boys. We shared tears when we each lost a parent. I remember sleepless nights on the Fire Department answering calls together for nearly 26 years now. I remember him being the best Assistant Chief we ever had. And I remember him being proud of me when I recieved that position. But mostly I remember him as a true friend.

As I look down at his face I see the scars where they have done surgeries trying to stop this insideous disease that is ravaging his brain. His right hand shakes with uncontrollable tremors and left arm hangs limp. He holds my hand with a strong grip and musters the strength to ask me to start the IV on him because I would do better than the ER nurses. My hand trembled as I threaded the needle into a spidery vein and I breathed a heavy sigh as it went in smoothly. We take him to the ER, I give the nurses report as the tears fill my eyes. I know I will not transport him again.

Geno lost his battle with brain cancer at 12:57 today.

And I lost a friend

Thank you all for the kind thoughts and words. I hesitated to post the whole story but felt he deserved it. Geno was very special since we pretty much grew up together. Along with Jeff, who is the chief, we were always a trio.
