20050514..May 14, 2005...Official Check in Disney's 1st 14 Day thru Panama Canal Part 2

I understand the reluctance of nasmith to spend the time and money on a 2 week cruise, even if it is on the Magic. The lure of the Panama Canal transit certainly has us excited, as I'm sure it does for everyone else on this board. We did a back to back on the Magic in July of 2003. Except for the excursions and the 15 minutes we spent in the terminal between the two legs of the cruise, we were on the ship for 2 full weeks. I will tell you that I hope everybody understands what 2 weeks on that ship is going to mean. By Wednesday of the second week, we were getting a little stir crazy (and we are adults!). I am virtually certain that Disney and DCL will try with all their might to keep us occupied but 2 weeks is still 2 weeks. If anybody is having second thoughts about this cruise, they should heed our advice and rethink their desicion to go. Lastly, we were unaware that the excursions had been announced, let alone available for purchase. We are extremely disappointed that they are all sold out, according to the boards, without an opportunity to sign up for any of them. Our trip is already paid for and we had no knowledge of any of this. In fact, we have had no official notification as to the itinerary. We look forward to seeing all of you and I am sure we will all enjoy ourselves immensely.

Debbie, you might want to double check with Disney, I doubt all the excursions are sold out. They didn't have a lot of them in the computer this morning, so you might still be able to book some. My cm this morning told me that the excursion I wanted was showing "not available" and I said you have got to be kidding me at 2 minutes after 9:00! So he went and checked with his supervisor, and sure enough, it was not on the system! Like you, I'm sure the majority of the cruisers did not know anything at all about the 90 day booking. Disney did not announce this at all, nor did they send any one listing in advance! Gotta love the boards to keep us ahead of the game.

I for one, know I will completely enjoy the relaxation time on the cruise. NO phones to answer for nearly 3 weeks! I will be the happiest person on earth! (on my way the the happiest place on earth) LOL

Hi All-

First - Notice this is my 500th post (Thought that was cool....not in the leagues of major posters, but still....)

Second - I have to apologize to those who made comments about there being alot of kids on board , and then I razzed them -- I just got back from the 4-day and there were 2700 people on board ---- 1000 of those were children.........and it was ALOT of kids (love kids (pediatric nurse here), have one of my own --- but the noise, noise, noise.......)...

Third - I may not be going on this 2 -week cruise ---- as I would rather spend my vacation dollars elsewhere --- sorry - I am just Not sold on cruising. My Son would love to go (He loves the kid's club) and when I ask my DH for his opinion, I get "I don't know, what do you think?". I'm not cancelling yet (I have until March 15th to pay up / cancel); but I think it unlikely that I will go and I don't want anyone making a magnetic door sign unecessarily :)

If I DO go - a large part of that decision would be the fact that I think everyone on this board would be super-FUN to cruise with - and that in turn would make the cruise oh so much fun! In fact, I'm sort of mourning the loss of my vacation with y'all! If I DO decide to go, can I still have that Magnetic sign??

Thanks everyone - If I don't make it - Have a great trip!!! Jill

Fins Up Jill!
We ( I hope I can speak for everyone here) hope you change your mind. This will probably be the only chance anyone will ever see Scott in a grass skirt. :)

P.S. I don't think ALL of the excursions are sold out. I don't even think they are close to being sold out. There are probably one or two unavailable at this point, but I would get on the phone and be put on the waiting list if something you want is unavailable, because my guess is you have a pretty good chance of it coming through if you are on the waiting list. Just my two cents worth!

Linda
I hope you're right. I forgot that it was my job to call today and make reservations. :sad2:
Definitely will call tomorrow.

What's Going On.

IMPORTANT...
To make sure we get our pins in time for the cruise, I will need to get the payment to Susan by 3/14 the latest. Ideally, we should have the order cut off on 2/14, which would give everyone 3 weeks to get the payment to me. We can extend that by a week, as I am padding this to leave no room for errors. I figure I need the payment by 3/7. Susan says she needs the payment by 3/14, and will order by 4/1, so we will have our pins by 4/29 (this leaves only a 2 week window for error) Once we cut off the orders, I will contact Susan with our total, and then she will get the pricing. I will PM everyone as well as post the price. Initially, I was going to just purchase them, and collect when I pass them out

Recap: Order cut off by 2/14 - 2/21
Payment to me by 3/7
Payment to Susan by 3/14
Susan will order and pay by 4/1

I saw your post regarding making a DVD for the May repo cruise. I also saw that if you do this that you'd
keep the cost at just a little bit over the price of materials and shipping

This is going to be a problem. We don't allow For Sale posts: http://www.wdwinfo.com/guidelines.htm

It's up to you if you still want to do this, but it has to be at cost. There's a ton of stuff being made specifically for this cruise and nothing is being sold for more than what the order actually is.

I wanted to make you aware of this and give you the opportunity to think about it beforehand.

See you in May!

Regina

Ooh, that didn't come out right, did it? I'm sorry, I just figured I'd round to the nearest $0.50 or $1 since I can't really determine the actual "at cost" price. The problem is the ink I'd be using for printing on the discs and inserts. I could guess about $0.10 or $0.15 a page for a full color print (2 pages would be needed for a DVD and then there's the disc - it's a heavy-duty glossy paper so it requires more ink than regular printing, and I'm sure it takes more ink to print an image on a printable disc), but I don't really know if that's accurate or not. Unfortunately, I can't just name the price like people who are ordering things from other companies can.

I also wasn't sure how to deal with shipping - whether that would vary from person to person - and how to set one price for everyone. The discs, cases, inserts, and covers would come to $1.14 for a full product (minus ink). (That would change if it became a 2-disc DVD, and that depends on how much video and photos I was sent). That's really nothing (amazing, isn't it, that we're charged so much for DVDs?), and I probably wouldn't mind doing those as a gift, but the shipping materials and postage (since these would have to be done after the cruise and couldn't just be given to everyone onboard) would probably make it more than I could afford for everyone.

So, that's why I left it open to see if anyone had any suggestions about how best to handle it or if anyone was even interested in the first place. I wanted to see if there was interest before I sat down and tried to figure out the best way to calculate the cost. I wasn't planning on making money off of people; I was just trying to think of the best way to simplify things. The only self-gain I was thinking about would be the free publicity and a chance for a bunch of people to see what I can produce and consider me for future projects ;)

I'm going to post this to the cruise thread as well. Hopefully, others will have suggestions for how to deal with this, but I would really rather make sure people are interested at all before delving into all the details.

OK - so, don't worry about placing orders yet :) Sounds like a few of you are interested, and that's good enough for me. I'd prefer you email me (nejthelion@earthlink.net) so I can keep better track of them. I'm always so concerned about missing something on the boards. Just let me know if you might be interested in having a DVD and if you think you might be able to send me video or photos after the cruise - I need to make sure I'll have enough to work with before I start taking orders! But nothing will be set in stone. Once the cruise is over, I'll send a message to everyone (and post on the board as well, although I'm sure the thread will eventually fade away) asking for photos and video, and then once the project is complete (hopefully within the next few weeks after - depends on what all I get and how long it takes to get it to me), we'll go into order details and such.

I'm left with the dilemma of how to price these. There's the question of returning photos and video to those who submit them for the DVD. I usually recommend copying such things onto data CDs or DVDs so that they don't need to be returned, but that isn't always an option. Note: I'm not limited to digital anything. I can scan in photos, slides, negatives, and I can take footage off a VHS, Hi-8, or DV tape, too. I don't typically do mass productions of these - usually a small number for each project. But those types of things often need to be shipped back.

As for shipping, I'd suggest flat-rate Priority mail (envelopes are $3.85 and boxes are $7.70). Regular DVD mailers would only work for people who haven't sent anything that needs to be returned. But do the people who send me photos and footage deserve to pay more? Not hardly. I'd be more comfortable using the box and some bubble wrap - even padded envelopes make me nervous with breakable things like discs. If we did go with envelopes, I'd rather ship them already inside a padded envelope within the priority mail cardboard one. I can also print the labels online and get delivery confirmation for free. And insurance can be used, but probably should be optional. Doesn't that require a signature? And for people who order multiple copies, that shouldn't change the postage. So, I guess I'd just tack on additional $1.14's. See, my brain is starting to hurt. The shipping issue is what makes it complicated in setting a price. I would LOVE suggestions from anyone who has more experience with mass mailings or just anyone with an idea.

Okay, here are the pin coloring options:

(A) is a new color choice on black metal, (B) is the original in Gold metal, (C) is the original on Silver metal, (D) is the original on Black metal.

I think the original is best... D gets my vote!

Are you going to put the design on CafePress so we can get shirts???? I really think it would be cool...... front and back with the flipped designs.

Just a heads up for anyone on ATA airlines. I checked my reservation today thinking that there would be no problem since I am in Indianapolis and they supposedly continued their flights from Indy to Orlando. Surprise!!!!!!!! They now only have one flight to Orlando and it occurs at 8 AM on that Friday. No others.
Well, this will not do. They previously changed our schedule from LA back which we could not do and therefore had to totally cancel that flight with a refund.
Today , we cancelled our flight to Orlando with a refund.
BEWARE Despite being in business, ATA is in trouble and you may also be in trouble. Check your reservations.

Thanks for the reminder 3Dan. We got a bit of a surprise from Delta when our flight from LAX on the 29th was changed from 9:00am to 7:00am about a week ago. :earseek:

We were able to change it to the 10:30pm flight. :)

Well I just booked our flights today, trying South West which we have never flown before. The fares are great I just need to stay up late and get those A boarding passes. One more task done, now I need to pay up and get figure out what to do at the ports of call.

Why would you not make it on-board?

Did I miss something? Would you miss the pleasure of this cruise because you snuck one in? Come along, guys....Anniversaries are a great reason to cruise...!

Cause I might cancel.

I thought I'd know by now but looks like I'll take the decision to the wire. My wife and I are still debating whether to do this or something different.

I like cruising, she likes Disney, so this cruise is sort of a compromise, except we did WDW twice last year as well - so I'm about Disney-ed out for now. I'd prefer to go on a more adult focused cruise line: Princess, Celebrity, etc.

Still, the idea of being disconnected from work with my wife's full attention for 2 weeks is very, very appealing.

Debbie

I agree Debbie! A or D--I like the Magic in red, but I like D best.......what a tossup......

Thanks for all the additional work with the choices...
The ship has been changed to look more like the Magic... (a LOT of WORK)
And, now our pin shows us leaving WDW (under Taking the Magic) and arriving at DL... NICE TOUCH!

Question... Is the original design available as a choice? I checked the pictures, and the original is not there.

The original had the blue boat, with the word MAGIC in GOLD, Kingdom to Kingdom was outlined in white which made it "POP"

Of those given, I Like A, although it would be lost on a white t-shirt.
All the letters in gold makes B a bit blurry
C doesn't have as much detail
If there was a choice for another selection, I would choose D if MAGIC were in GOLD and the Kingdom to Kingdom were outlined in white, like the original.

CHOICES, CHOICES... oh my. :rotfl:

Hope we don't get too bogged down with the choices with the payment date coming up. It looks like FIRST couldn't be worked into the design...

Beautiful work! Thanks! :goodvibes

My choice is A, or D with the changes.
