20050430 or... April 30, 2005 cruise, anyone?

Is there lots of speculation that they are going to raise the price of the REAS package? I tried to add it to our reservation a while back, and was told by our DU agent that they were not releasing the REAS package for the 2005 dates yet. She suggested I try to actually have it added in October or November. Since this is a "regular" package, I wondered why they couldn't just add it to ANY reservation. Any insight for me?

I wouldn't be surprised if they did raise the price after these boards made it so popular! Everything comes at a cost, and you have to evaluate how much you want to pay for what you want. At least that's how I see it!!

Hi all you 4/30/05 cruisers!:wave2:

I hate to bow out of this cruise, especially since it will be my 50th birthday in 2005. But......... I just could not resist the repositioning cruise, it is what I really wanted all along. I am sad because I was really looking forward to meeting you Andy, Rae, Makaylee, and everyone else. Save some shrimp for our long voyage out west!:teeth: Perhaps one day we will all cruise together. I just can't possibly afford to do two cruises in one year, especially with the cost of the FL to CA cruise! Needless to say I am so excited I could burst!

Robin:hyper2:

I am sad to report that both Rae's family and my family will not be sailing on the April 30-May 7, 2005 sailing.

Both of our families have decided with going on the 14 day CA to FL August 20, 2005 cruise we could not afford to do both cruises.

We both wish you all a Happy Sailing!!!!

As you can read in the previous updated post, there has been a change in plans for us in the April 30, 2005 sailing of the Magic. It was just not feasible to do both the April and August 2005 cruises. Both of our families have decided to opt for the August 2005 CA to FL cruise.

I had wondered whether or not you would be able to justify both cruises in such a short period of time! It's great you will have the opportunity to do the transitional cruise. What an amazing opportunity. I'd love to go through the Panama canal some time. Have a wonderful trip!

Much love to all of you and best wishes!

Rae

Just got off the Magic yesterday. While there a little bird told me VerandahMan and Rae were sailing 4/30/05, so we went ahead and booked onboard. I couldn't wait to get home and check out this thread...and...WAAAA! Found out that I will not in fact be sailing with them. But....that's alright. Looks like I'll be sailing with a great group of people and I'm looking forward to getting to know you all! :)

Welcome! Just curious--I've been reading SO MANY negative trip reports lately. What were your thoughts on the food, Kid's clubs, and how was the weather?

Wow. There is NOTHING like being on a DCL cruise. I have popped into the cruise line forum and quickly glimpsed some posts between unpacking, catching up on Survivor and tending to my virus that I came down with on the last night of the cruise(head cold thingy) So, not having read ALL of the posts, I'll just give you my take on a few things....

Kids clubs. WONDERFUL! This was our first Magic cruise and dd was extremely dissapointed as she had made a few very special friend on the Wonder. She was worried that no one there would be as nice. How wrong! She made some very dear counselor friends who are now dear to her heart (maybe partly b/c she faked a British accent for a whole day and told everyone she was from London---we're from London, Ohio---so once she revealed herself they just thought she was the cleverest thing. The counselor MOST fooled actually was FROM England and was SOOOO impressed with her accent!) Mother's Day my kids checked into the clubs at 9:00 am and didn't come out until nearly midnight. So the clubs must have been FANTASTIC!

Food...ha. Ok, stay home and eat the stuff I cook or eat on DCL? I'm not into fancy dining or expensive restaurants, so *to me* the food on DCL is the best. Maybe if I was used to dining at high class restaurants with world renouned (sp?) chefs, then I'd have something to complain about! I'm a pretty good cook, but even having said that, DCL blows my cooking away. And besides, I dont' have to cook it OR clean up after it...that ALWAYS makes food taste better. This was our first time doing Palo. Food there was excellent, but I did feel out of my league there. Everyone had such good manners and seemed to know what fork to use and where to sit. Apparently, simple me, missed the cue when the server pulled the chair out (for me) and I sat on the cushy bench. Oops. Not until after I sat down did dh say "he was pulling the chair out for YOU, not ME!" OOPS! Saw a post about Pinocchio's pizza not being good. Funny because we ate there several times and loved it. Again, guess it depends on what you're used to.

Weather was great (always cracks me up that Disney asks what you thought of the weather on the comment card--like they can control it) Rained in the afternoon of Grand Cayman day and rained at CC for about 3 minutes. Otherwise sun and more sun. Had "fresh gale" force winds on our sea day with 15 ft waves but no one was any worse for the wear for it.

Interesting things to note....we left Grand Cayman, went to dinner. Then going into the show the ship was lurching a bit. It was almost difficult going down the stairs. Found out after the show that the Magic had left Grand Cayman, but due to a medical emergency had turned back around, dropped off a passenger in Grand Cayman, and was again setting out. They hoped to get us to Cozumel on time. We went at full throttle and made it to Cozumel on schedule.
Mickey pool is ONLY worth going to on embarkation day. Otherwise too crowded and slide line too long. Goofy pool was downright dangerous as kids kept jumping in off of the sides (where it clearly says "NO JUMPING") and weren't looking where they were jumping. Several times my kids were almost taken out by jumping children.
Deck parties are WAY TOO LOUD as are "family dance parties" in Studio Sea." Walked into a family dance party and my 7 yr old clamped his hands over his ears and said "I can't stand it, let's go!"
Got pretty sick of hearing the "excellent speech." Seemed to hear it a lot from our server who was less than excellent. If it wasn't for our assistant server things never would have gotten done. She did 3/4 of his work and we tipped her more than him.
Got an upgrade at the port...from a 6 to a 4. Deck 8 is noisy. Sitting on my verandah there was lots of noise from Deck 9. I missed my cat 6 which was only one floor up from the Lab and Club.
Jackpot Bingo is too addicting and I never won! :)
Watching passengers come back on board in Cozumel I noticed something. The ppl going into the DCL line were all happy and with families and looking good. I saw many (probably more than 10 ppl) being supported by two or more ppl getting into the line for the Carnival Elation docked next to us. I guess it just shows the kind of ppl who are more likely to sail with Carnival vs. DCL.
Encountered a nasty cruiser on DCL who humiliated a mom on an excursion. The mom had a 1 1/2 yr old who was a bit fussy in the taxi bus and the nasty mom made several comments to her and told her she shouldn't be there b/c the child was too disruptive. Also said things like "I guess that's why this excursion has a lower age limit of 3 yrs." Finally the mom got off with her fussy baby and WALKED back to the ship. Bumped into her later and she said it took 1 1/2 hours to get back!! Upon our return to the ship I checked and the excursion info said "All ages." Just thought that was rather rude for someone to say.
All in all I had a WONDERFUL (or rather MAGICal) time! I'd do it all again in a heartbeat!
HTH. If you have any more specific questions, let me know.

OhioMinnie--THANK YOU! Your information was very helpful. I was getting discouraged reading all the negative posts.

I agree with you--If I don't have to prepare or clean up after a meal, I'm pretty much satisfied. We didn't do Palo on our 4-night Wonder trip last year, so we are hoping to at least try it on the Magic.

How old are your children? Ours will be 11 and 14 at the time of sailing. Our son will be in the teen club for the first time. He's pretty shy, so I am not sure he'll spend much time there. Our daughter is VERY social, and will probably pick and choose from the different Kids Club activities. She didn't really make any friends when we went on the Wonder last year because it seemed all the kids in her age group were already "paired" with cousins, etc. they were traveling with. I know if she met someone to play with, we'd probably never see her!

My parents will be coming with us on this trip, as well. This will be their very first cruise. It is actually the first VACATION they've had in 10 years! They live in Montana, and I live in Michigan, so a lot of their "vacation" time is spend traveling to visit us. I've been so concerned about them having a good time after reading all the negative posts.

I have heard that this is a particularly windy year. We were very spoiled with TOTALLY calm seas when we were on the Wonder last year. I hope that a rocking boat isn't the norm for our trip. We actually all took 1/2 a bonine tablet each day, just in case. Since we had no side effects, we would probably do the same again.

Thanks again for all your info! Rhonda

I thought about some things I forgot on my last post!

We have specifically requested a Cat. 5 cabin, on deck 7 mid-ship. We have our cabin number. While I probably wouldn't mind if they moved us to a Cat. 3 or higher, I'd prefer to stay mid-ship. Did you have any say in your upgrade, or did they just move you?
I'd actually love it if they upgraded my parents, since they are currently in a Cat. 10, also on deck 7. I really would not want to move from our nice quiet location to one right under the Goofy pool!

I agree about the pool situation. I am thankful our kids are OK skipping the pool. They'd prefer to hang out at Scoops, anyway! I am constantly amazed at the parents who allow their children to endanger or disturb others. We didn't have any problems with kids running up and down the halls on our last trip, but apparently others have had problems with that.

Did you ever find out what the Medical problem was on Grand Cayman? Did you have calm seas other than the one sea day?

Thanks for answering my questions...you are giving me hope again! Rhonda

p.s. I love the quote at the end of your info! :sunny: :sunny:

Rhonda,
Our only rough day was that day at sea. It was the day before CC though and I had doubts that we'd be able to dock the next day. By the time we got to CC though it was much calmer and the captain had no problems docking. We took Bonine (one in the morning, one at night) at the beginning, but then stopped. I don't think it was really doing anything. Only one night did I feel a bit queasy, but coincidentally it was the night I had too much to eat at dinner and then too much to eat at the midnight dessert buffet. So I think it was a case of gluttony! Otherwise I was fine.

My dd will be almost 11 and my ds will be 8 on that cruise. My daughter LIVES at the kids club, so maybe your dd will be able to hook up with her. Only problem is, my dd is a RABID Buckeye fan and if she finds out your dd lives in MI she may give her a bit of grief! :)

We took my parents on a 4 day Wonder cruise last year. They had never cruise, and had never even WANTED to cruise. They LOVED it! In fact, they are probably joining us on the 10 day over Christmas this year!

No idea what happened to the person in Grand Cayman. It was never mentioned again.

We had no say in our upgrade. I'd have preferred to stay more mid-ship b/c of the easy access to the kids clubs (dd's first time with check in/check out privledges) We were moved to 1/2 way between mid-ship and aft. I've heard if your reservations are linked with someone elses then they are less likely to upgrade b/c they figure you want to stay in the same area as the other ppl.

Have hope. Of course ppl like to talk about the negative, and I had a few instances of that on this cruise, but if I look at the WHOLE experience, I couldn't ask for much more. I *could* dwell on the negative, but that would just make me sick inside!

p.s. go Buckeyes! ;)

Sorry to hear that...you guys were the reason I booked the April 30th cruise but I am sure there will be a great group going anyway......
See you in another year OhioMinnie!! We had a great 2 days after the cruise....Magic Kingdom was packed on Saturday but we got on all the things we wanted to and Sunday at Universal with out front of the line passes for every ride we covered them all in 4 hours@

It could get interesting in the Kid's Club, given the fact that my daughter is a DEVOTED U of M girl! :-) :hyper: We have several generations of U of M alumni--including my DH! She's used to defending herself, though. Her school is split between U of M loyalty and Michigan State loyalty. Now, THAT gets ugly! I hope they can hook up. I'd be glad to have them e-mail, if it's OK with you....Rhonda

Just had to put my two cents in there - since my paycheck says University of Michigan on the outside... :rolleyes1

Sure! It'd be fun for them to "know" someone they are cruising with!

Let me tell you a story about my kids. One day, while at WDW, we were riding on the boat from the MK to Wilderness Lodge. About three rows up was a man with a Michigan jacket on. We're sailing away and all of a sudden, my son starts singing the song "we don't give a darn for the whole state of Michigan, the whole state of Michigan...." by now, my dd has joined in and they've gotten louder! The guy turned around and smiled. I said "Go BUCKS!" and he smirked!

My dd actually (at the ripe old age of 9) has Buckeye season tickets!

Wow--Maybe this will be an opportunity for "character development!" :chat: My daughter loves U of M, but she isn't really aware of any of the other rivalries, except the one with Michigan state! Did I mention she'll be 11 when we cruise? She would be totally oblivious to the whole Michigan/Ohio state thing.

We actually, at one time, considered a move to your area. My husband worked for 7 years at Battelle out in Washington state. The headquarters is in Columbus, and when my husband decided that he wanted to raise our children in his home territory of the mid-west, Columbus seemed like an obvious choice. However, he wasn't sure he, as a U of M alumni, would be able to "survive" that deep in Ohio State territory, and opted for Western Michigan instead! I grew up in Montana, so I am totally clueless about all this Big 10 Rivalry "stuff".

I just booked our rooms for this cruise today! Very exciting! My Dh, me and our dd6 will be cruising with my mom. It is the first time for them cruising, my first time on DCL.

I would love to find another family or two that will have a daughter participating in the 5-7 aged Kids Club activities. My dd will be 6 1/2 at the time of the cruise.

coleland-

My DD will be 7 at the time of the cruise and my DS will be 6. They will both be participating in the 5-7 Kids Club activities. My DD loves to make new friends and I'm sure she'll be looking to make some on the cruise!
