I would sincerely appreciate your help and ideas on how my wife and I can surprise my DD6 and DS10 when we reveal to them we have this cruise booked.
First, welcome back.
We've pulled off two surpsise trips for our kids. One to WDW, one for a 3 day cruise.
For the WDW one we planned months in advance. The trip was in September, so in June, July, and August we put together scavenger hunts. The kids would get a clue that would give them an arbitrary hint where to find the next clue (in poem form) For example, maybe the first one would say something like:
Summer is hot, as a general rule,
This is the machine that keeps you cool.
The kids would have to figure out to go to the fan and they'd find a piece of paper that said F-A-N on it and it would have the next clue. One (or more) of the letters in the word FAN would be underlined (more on that later) So they'd go from place to place finding clues with underlined letters. If I remember right they had to find 10-12 clues hidden around the house. Once they had them all we'd give them a sheet of paper that had lines on it and they'd have to unscramble those underlined letters to figure out what the surprise was for that day's trip. In June, they unscrambled "Columbus Zoo" and we went to the zoo that day. July was "Udders and Putters" (the local putt putt course), Can't remember what August was. Well, in September, they unscrambled "Walt Disney World!" They were stunned. They could NOT believe it. My son actually cried (he was 3 1/2 yrs old) because he wanted to go to Funland --the indoor play place. My daughter (then 6) questioned every part of it...."where is the luggage?" "when did you pack?" "how are we getting there?" "where are the tickets?" "who is watching the cat?" FINALLY on the trip to the airport it sunk in and they were VERY excited.
For the cruise....we were going with my MIL and her dh. We told the kids that THEY were going and we had to drive them to the airport. Also told them MIL and dh had to borrow our luggage (that explained why OUR luggage was in the van) Dd was a bit ticked that grandma and grandpa didn't have the common courtesy to at least ASK us to join them on the cruise! While driving MIL and dh to the airport we spilled the beans. Had to produce our cruise documents to prove that we weren't playing some sick joke, but afterwards there was screaming and yelling and tears of joy.
I love those surprise trips. They are tricky to pull off. Many times we had to cover up something that was said accidentally. The joy on the kids faces was SO worth the hassle though!
Have fun!
