Day 2
47 yr. old Solo Diner on Old Silver Plan
Lunch
Kona Cafe, Poly
I had a PS, intending to monorail over from MK for lunch. The weather turned stormy and I dodged a soaking rain! I was seated in a timely fashion. The restaurant was turning over from breakfast to lunch.
Appetizer: Pot Stickers
I love duck and these dumplings were not something I can get at home, served with a ginger soy sauce and pickled cukes on the side. I love dumplings and these were good and somewhat unusual because of the accompaniments.
Entree: Mahi Mahi
This was served blackened just right on a kaiser roll with lettuce and tomato and a unique tartar sauce. I think it came with steak fries.
Beverages: Unsweetened Ice Tea and a Lapu Lapu
The Lapu Lapu was a really tasty knock out punch. It is served with Meyer rum and juices and then topped off with Bacardi 151! The presentation was nice - served in a pineapple and with an umbrella garnish. Mind you I wasn't driving and it was a rainy afternoon!
I napped when I got back to WL!
Too full for dessert!
Food: A-
Very good quality at reasonable prices.
Service: A-
Susan was my server. She was efficient and friendly!
Atmosphere: B
The booth I had was comfy. It was located so I could see the comings and goings out in the lobby. It was nice.
Value: A
I think the quality and presentation were well above what one might expect from a hotel restaurant. It was NOT a coffee shop type dining establishment by any means! Total: $29.78 Food and tax
Dinner
Jiko, Animal Kingdom Lodge
I had a PS but arrived early to explore the resort. Very cool place and great animal viewing.
Appetizer:
Jiko Goat and Sheep Cheese Selection
Humboldt Fog Chevre (like Blue Cheese), Goat Brie (soft with crust), Pyrenees Sheep Manchego (solid, cheddar-like texture, mild), Frozen Goat's milk scoop with Honey Drizzle (yummy!), Quince Jam (tasty) and croutons (ordinary)
I know you think I am crazy about details but I was able to take the menu with me and make notes on it! We have friends in VT that regularly make wonderful goat cheese. This sampler plate did not disappoint. Good variety and good flavor. I could have eaten a whole dish of frozen goat's milk! Wow, very good ice milk like texture and a mildly sweet, clean taste.
Entree:
Oak-grilled Filet Mignon with Macaroni and Cheese and Red Wine Sauce
The filet was very tender. The macaroni and cheese was well-flavored but sauceless - not dry but different.
Dessert:
Blueberry Sorbet
Nice and light after so filling a dinner! I LOVE sorbet.
Food: A-
Creative menu and lovely presentation. There were many items I would like to have tried.
Service: B-
My server was a bit taken aback that I was dining solo. It was the only place that the hostess said, "Only one?" when I checked in at the podium. Reynaldo, I think was my server and he was attentive at the beginning of the meal and then kind faded away. A tip issue maybe, or just busy. I'm not sure which.
Atmosphere: A-
I really liked this place. It had an exotic smokey aroma, probably from the open kitchen area. And I so wished my artistic DS was with me to check out the beautiful bird sculpture lighting. It was a sophisticated atmosphere without being stuffy. And it was not too noisy either!
Value: A-
I think it was on the money for the caliber of the food. My only complaint was my server and the awkward greeting from the hotess.
Total: $70.00 food and tax
I also did some suggested wine choices. I wasn't crazy about the selections but they were good enough.
More to come!
