20/20 this friday - 5 couples trying to adopt one baby

This sickens and disgusts people? You are overly sensitive if so, I don't see how you can make it through everyday life because this stuff is everywhere. While this may be said it doesn't sicken me, partial birth abortion sickens me, the Holocaust sickens me, this is just modern American entertainment and it's only likely to continue down this path.

I am so disappointed in ABC. They have changed the promo but that doesn't change the content of the show. This is just another example of
"The paradox of our time in history.....we have more degrees but less sense, more knowledge, but less judgement, more experts, yet more, problems, more medicine, but less wellness..... We have multiplied our possessions, but reduced our values.....We have conquered outerspace but not inner space. These are the days of quick trips and throw away morality......." [A Message From George Carlin]

I could go on with his message, but you get the idea.
This 20/20 show is not news, and not entertainment; it is exploitation. It has no place on TV and I, as well, will not watch it.

I wouldn't call it oversensitive at all--people are allowed to have an opinion. The couples may have voluteered to do the tv special but I doubt they would be very happy about that distasteful promo that ABC came up with (which did appear like a reality show  what's new)

I don't see how you can make it through everyday life because this stuff is everywhere

Yeah, sadly it is everywhere....it still rubs me the wrong way and I don't think that is being oversensitive. The stories they air on TV today are nothing but pure crap anymore.

Hubby and I are in the process of adopting right now and this show and promo for it is the hot topic on all the adoption message boards we visit.

I for one will watch it just because it has to deal with adoption and I am curious to see the approach they take. I think the wording and the promo itself was to get people talking and was in very poor taste but it succeeded, everyone is talking about it and tons of people will probably tune in.

This whole approach of each of these families trying to outsell themselves to this 16 year old birthmom, is kind of why my husband and I decided to go with international adoption. I felt that with a domestic adoption we would be "selling ourselves" to the birthmom and "competing" against other couples she was interested in. I am not against domestic adoption but just explaining partly what drew us to international instead.

One other intersting thing is-on Yahoo news right now there is an article about Uri Geller (who happens to be best friends with Michael Jackson) he has written a book about a proposed game show where families compete to "win a child". He has even applied for a copyright on the idea. His application was filed on Jan 11,2001-so now watch him probably sue 20/20 for stealing his idea!!!

Unbelievable!!!

I am an adoptive parent -- (my DD is now 6yo) -- Unfortunately - that is the way most adoptions today are handled -- your bio is put into a book -- and literaly the birthmother (usually) and /or birth family's pick a couple, interview them, and choose between 3-5 couples. The first birthmother's choice of another couple was b/c they had an inground swimming pool!!!!!! --- the 2nd birthmother's family's decision was based on religion (they wanted a catholic family to raise their child) --- Note the first birthmother while interveiwing us - kept telling us that she was going to be "allowed" to get a kitten since she was giving up her baby (she was 16) --- the 2nd birthmother was bullied by her parents into adoption. Our 3rd expierence was with our daughter -- we have an open adoption and see both her birth mother and birth father - and his parents (no they are not together). Needless to say -- we spent the extra $ and went back to the dr. for more infertility treatments.....we now have a 9 month old son.......

Hmmmm...so it's all Barbara Walters and ABC's fault?

They couldn't promote this show if no one was WILLING to do it, now could they?

I think the anger is misplaced..

I can see what you are saying :) And I partially agree with that, BUT I think ABC used some interesting and selective editing to promote the show--and it probably could have been done differently and more tastefully. I think it is a bit out of line to promote the chances for 5 couples to adopt a baby as a reality show or game. These are their hopes and dreams--to finally become parents. They are dealing with a subject that is life changing and emotional for all involved, and so making a promo with such selective editing is going to be taken much more to heart than, say, the way NBC edited the Apprentice footage of Omarosa

I saw a clip of this last night on channel 7, and one of the couples actually said "This is like "The Bachelor"...hope we don't get voted off tonight".

Unreal.
