while checking out our bellhop gave us some interesting info. the reason the 20,000 league clean up is taking so long is bc when it was first built disney never laid a concrete foundation. so all the dirt in the area is covered in chlorine and the EPA is being very strict and requires all polluted dirt to be removed before rebuilding. we were told that at nite binds of dirt at being removed but its gonna take a looooooong time bc its 30 years of chlorinated dirt.

Something about that just doesn't ring true. If it was just dirt wouldn't the water have just seeped into the earth and not stayed in the lagoon? Wouldn't the props have not had anyplace to fasten too? How do you clorinate constantly moving water, if it isn't in a confined area? And why would you clorinate constantly moving water?

I suppose this could all be true. I am not an engineer but I would be curious as to how they could have been able to insure that the water levels were always constant if nothing was really containing them.

And if there wasn't a foundatin of concrete and steel, wouldn't the moving water combined with seepage have caused a failure lagoon walls? In addition to killing any "real" landscaping within 50 feet of the lagoon.

regardless of why they are taking so long the fact is - they are taking just too darn long. I went for the first time in 1989 and the attraction was closed then and as far as I know it never re-opened. I went back in 1990 and know for sure that it was closed for good.

It's been 15 years and they are still cleaning it up? They make it seem more like a nuclear waste sight than a lagoon.

The attraction did close some time ago, however the construction walls just went up about a month ago. It took some time to drain it all. I think somewhere I read it will take about 9 months to totally remove it.

What will they replace it with? PLease do not say another meet and greet. I cannot stand the way they keep getting rid of things and sticking in the meet and greets. Unless you have little kids a character meeting area is a non-attraction as far as I am concerned.

I was aware that the walls recently went up, I guess my point was - why did it take 15 years for them to go up? Seems that better planning should have went into that. Thats ALOT of wasted space to just let sit there for that long. Surely - some imagineer could have come up with something to put there before now.

I always wondered why they closed such a one-of-a-kind ride anyway.

I was told that 20,000 leagues leaked into the area below (I don't know what they call it but you know the sublevel of Disney?). I would imagine that if that is true, there could be alot of damage underneath as well. Seeing the walls up just makes me sad because it was my favorite attraction as a kid. I hope they replace it with something good. I agree, no more meet and greets.

This attraction did NOT close permanently in 1989, it was open during my first visit in 1991, and again in 1992, for sure. Now as to whether it was open in 1993 during our first DVC stay, I don't really remember, but I think it was closer to '94 or '95 when it closed.

Thanks. I could have sworn I went on it in 1992!

Have to check my photos but I think we went on it in April 1994.

DD born in June 93 and we met friends who live far away in April 94 when she was 10 mos old. Reason I remember is that I didn't like the ride, but friends wanted to go on it, he is very tall and it was tricky getting on. I'm sure I took photos of them in the sub.

Now my curiousity is getting me, and I must search out the photo................................................this may take awhile.............

I was basing my dates on the fact that in 1990 we have photos stadning by the sign explaining to visitiors that the ride was closed. Also, in our scrapbook it is noted that we'd never get to ride the ride due to it's closure. I'm not sure why thats put in there. Maybe we talked to a CM and was told something....I dunno. I just know that it's in there. We didn't return until 1996 - which of course, it was closed. So maybe my presumption was that since it was closed the first week of June 1990 and then again in 1996, that it had been closed the whole time.

Perhaps they doing some kind of work to it in 1990?

Either way, even closing in 1994, my point was that it has taken too long for clean up, whether 15 yrs or just 10 yrs.

We just took the "Keys" tour on the 7th of July. We were told by our tour guide that the reason it has taken so long to replace the attraction is that the water system at 20K fed all all other attractions / fountains etc. ( not drinking fountains though). LOL They had to reroute all of the water lines & it took several years for this to get done.

CMs sometimes (not always) are sucked in to WDW urban legends(the bus drivers are notorious for this) and passing them along to guests. It would be cool for MK to get a new "E ticket" attraction. Agreed about the meet & greet areas. I'm sure that is an option that has been considered
