We have tall kids.... though we are not going until next may and she will be three then, I am wondering if we should take her on splash mountain, and other thrill rides???

how did your kids react to such rides??? I WOULD NEVER make her ride something if she acted or felt scared,(my parents did that to me) but I would LOVE to be able to ride some big rides with her if she wants to.

Any advice or tips would be helpful, TIA!

My kids are tall too, DD3.5 (she'll be four soon) is pushing 44 inches, just like my DD13 at that age who has already grown to 5'8" and is showing no signs of stopping. I think my DS was 46 inches on his fourth b-day.

What my kids always liked doing was looking at the Birnbaum's book. You could try sitting your DD down and reading her the discriptions of Splash Mountain to get her excited. You could also show her the planning video and others of rides online.

Have fun! :goodvibes

It really depends on the kid. I cannot imagine a 2 year old being okay with Splash or Space Mountains but someone will probably pop up and say their toddler LOVED them.

Figure out what scares her. Ride Dumbo to see if heights bug her, teacups for motion, Pirates or Mansion for scare factor. If those don't faze her, consider bigger rides but I would guess two is not really old enough to enjoy them.

My DS was 40" at 2 1/2.

He rode BTMR and Splash Mountain, but not things like ToT.

My almost 5 yo DD will finally be 40" for our October trip. She can't wait to ride all the "big" rides.

Yep, that would be me.... My DD was 2 3/4 the last time we did DL and she still tells everyone her favorite ride is Tower of Terror. She also loved Space Mountain (only 40 inches at DL). My kids have been around rides their whole lives though as we have two major theme parks nearby where we live. It totally depends on the kid. I would just try to anticipate everything that will happen and see if those are things your kids will like. For example, my kids did not like being wet when they were toddlers, so the log type rides - while not too scary for them - were their most hated rides until they got used to the wet feeling, KWIM? My DD (now 4) who loved tower of terror will probably find Dinosaur too scary due to the realistic theming... My DS went when he was 4 and LOVED it, but he doesn't frighten easily in that way.

My son LOVED them all at a young age. We asked him if he wanted to and he said yes, so off we went! He didn't start not liking some of them until almost 5 when he learned what fear was. Mainly it was if the ride got dark (tot and space mtn) that he doesn't care for much anymore, he is only 5 now so I am sure he'll outgrow it. He loves the thrill part of anything.

Handle 1 ride at a time. Do the kiddie rides like Pooh, Peter Pan, IASW, then move up to Dumbo- from there try the dark rides, do HM, and if that's ok- do Pirates (it has a VERY small dip, a good 'first hill'...if those work? Keep going up to the higher level rides- perhaps Barnstormer, and keep going :)

I will be the one that says my kids (2 of them, at least) loved thrill rides from a very young age (about 3) I say if they want to ride it, let them, as long as they meet the height requirement!

We have a son who has always been off of the growth chart for height. He was large enough to ride many rides by 2 - 3. However, and it looks like I'm in the minority here, he was and is terrified by most of them! Now at 7 he is 56" and can ride everything but wants to ride nothing except the rides that he is way too tall for. At first we tried to coax him thinking he would love some of the more tame rides once he tried them but boy were we wrong :( . I would let your little one be the guide and use the parent swap if you need to.

My DS is also very tall and scared by rides that he could technically ride on. I think Goofy's Barnstormer is a good 'test' ride, because it's short. If your child LOVES it and isn't scared, then other coasters might go well. My DS sort-of enjoys it, but has that nervous laugh that lets me know he wouldn't like a wilder coaster. He *loves* cars, so I took him on Test Track when he was 36 months. I felt horrible during it, because he was really scared, though he said he liked it. When we got off, he didn't want to go back on with his dad (we had child swap). By a few hours later, he said it was his favorite ride, but still didn't want to go back on. :confused3

Anyways, since we (and you, I see) have a younger child, too, it was almost better not to need to go on all the wilder rides, because we could do more as a family instead.

thank you for sharing everyone, I am not sure how to quote other posters so bear with me!

It has been SO LONG since I have been that I forgot about the possible scariness factor of seemingly innocent rides.

I never even THOUGHT about dark or loud rides being an issue. I was just thinking about the "thrill" type rides...:confused3

I think I will take the advice of starting slow and working up to the bigger rides..

I had forgotten about that flume in the PoTC ride! maybe a good warm up!

My daughter is just a little taller than average. On our last trip, she was 40" and 3 years old. Although there were quite a few that she could ride, we didn't even try the thrill rides, the closest thing to a roller coaster she went on was the Barnstormer in MK and even that, she didn't seem too excited about. I think our next vacation in a couple of months, she will be 3.5years old, we will see if she can go on a few. I am a true believer of the fact that height restrictions are only recommendations. If your child is not ready for the roller coasters even if they are well above the minimum height restriction, then they should not ride it.

My son on the other hand, couldn't wait until he could ride the roller coasters, when he was about a quarter inch less than 40", he would sometimes be allowed to go to space mountain and other times, they didn't let him. He was so disappointed that vacation, because some rides he was allowed in while others not. But our next vacation 6 months later, he was absolutely ectatic. He was able to ride most of them. However, I did have my concerns because I thought he was too young, but my husband said that if he wants to, let him try. When he tried it, he absolutely loved it. Of course, it was another 10 rides before we can go to the next one. But he really had a great time.

I think it all depends on your child.

DD has been riding BTRR, Splash since she wsa two - and loves them...
She waited and waited for space and loved it as well (at 3ish) The only ride she has always chickened out on is Mission Space - she absolutely LOVES everything else - Space Moutnatin, TOT, Test Track, Soaring, Everst, you name it - she loves it - except Mission Space -we can't figure it out -

but as others said - just take it one by one - BTRR is a little more jerky then the others and I usually put my hand between her head and the side of the car just so it doesn't bop her one...

you are all so lucky! my daughter is almost 3 years old and only 35 inches tall but she is a daredevil. she has only gone on a big kid ride which is matterhorn but i cannot wait till she can go on splash and space. she needs to have a growth spurt or something!!

You should call your pediatrician and ask. Although she may be at a good height to ride, maybe some of the shaking and twisting my not do well for her insides!

DD was 2.5 when we first started taking her and what she was willing to do each trip differed. Her first trip she was pretty open to trying rides but wasn't tall enough for the big ones.

Snow White - YES
Goofy's BS - YES
BTMRR - not tall enough
Pooh - YES
Peter Pan - YES
Pirates - NO
Haunted Mansion - NO

At 3:

Snow White - NO
Goofy's BS - Would ride but did not like
BTMRR - not tall enough
Pooh - NO
Peter Pan - NO
Pirates - NO, would go but needed a flashlight and held on for dear life

At 3.5:

Snow White - YES
Goofy's BS - YES
BTMRR - YES, relucant at first and then loved
Pooh - YES
Peter Pan - YES
Pirates - YES
Haunted Mansion - YES, loved actually

My middle son was 40" exactly on our trip when he was 33 months old. The only 40" requirement rides he did were Splash, Thunder and Test Track but he LOVED all 3 of them. I got lots of awful looks coming off of Thunder Mtn. as I carried away this screaming toddler. People assumed I had forced him to get on the ride and he was terrified. The truth was that I had forced him to get OFF the ride and he was ticked off about that! He wanted to stay on and ride again! ;)

I say it depends on the kid. Try a test run on Goofy's Barnstormer and see how that goes. If it goes well then give the others a try.

My kids ideas of fun rides change yearly. We have a membership to a local pool/amusement park and the rides they are riding this year are totally different from what they wanted to ride last year. Last year my DD's were 2 and 4. The 2 year old would ride anything and never seemed scared and never cried but the 4 year old was scared of nearly every ride. Now this year they are 3 and 5 and the 3 year old who was the fearless 2 year old last year won't ride the same rides she loved last year. And my 5 year old who was scared of everything when she was 4 is now riding almost anything. I'm just hoping that my 3 year old gets back some of her fearlessness before our October trip.
