2 way radios

I am wondering if it is a good idea to purchase 2 way radios before going to WDW. I know they rent them. If I buy some, what is the KM or Mile range I should look for?

WDW in April... can't wait :)

We used to bring these before cell phones. Now we find them obsolete in the park. However they were great on the cruise.

We use our cell phones in the park. I have never had a problem getting service. I find it as a guest to be a pain when someone or kids in line next to us are using a two way radio. With a cell it is kept between the two people talking not the entire line of guests.

We used DSSs two way radios and had problems finding a channel for just us. At the same time, it was slightly amusing listening to other peoples conversations.

SIL brought for using in parks in January and after 2nd day, just left in the room because could not get good reception. Too many dead spots. Suggest using your cell phone.

I was just thinking about this same issue a few days ago ... thanks for confirming that we'll just go with the cell phones.

Just to add my two cents (you get what you pay for).

If you don't have a licence you can only legally operate FRS (low power) radios.

If you get a GMRS radio (the ones you see in the stores with the 10 mile range) you need a licence from the FCC.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Mobile_Radio_Service

Most of the radios sold are GMRS or FRS/GMRS hybrids and do say in the documentation that if you want to operate in GMRS mode you need to pay the FCC $85. I would say most (all) don't and I don't know how they would track you down but it is the law.

Of course the point is moot because they don't work. Even with "privacy codes" there are only so many channels and you will never get a clear channel.

We tried them in a small amusement park and it never worked. My wife kept hearing "hello are you there" and kept trying to answer me. I got yelled at because I wasn't responding to her. :confused3

You would be better off buying a disposable cell phone if you don't already have one.

I did some research and you can buy Virgin Mobile phone online for $9.99 includes free activation, free shipping, and free $10 airtime. Pretty good deal for a phone to use while on vacation. You just put in the area code where the phone will be used most. Can be activated via instructions online.
