:p I have scheduled Spirit of Aloha for August 3rd. Two questions:

1) How is it. Good? Bad?

2) Is there any interaction with the kids? Or, is there no audience participation?

Thanks Guys & Gals! :earsgirl: :earsboy:

I was at the luau in May with my DD4. I did not particularly care for the show. The food is okay, but the entertainment is pretty lame. To me, it was not worth the $50 a person. In hindsight, I should have just gone to Ohana for dinner. There is a part where kids can get up on stage and hula. There is also a part for honeymooners and couples celebrating an anniversary can get up on stage and slow dance.

Thanks F1Julie. My kiddies are 8, 9 & 14. I was just hoping there would be a little more kid involvement for the younger two girls.

Thanks for your time. ::MinnieMo ::MickeyMo

I know we're in the minority on this board, but we really enjoyed Spirit of Aloha. We went with a family group of 10 -- the youngest were 7-year-old twin boys. Everyone enjoyed it. The food was tasty and the show was great. I think people call it "lame" because the first part is a little juvenile -- about a girl coming home to Hawaii after something.... school on the mainland perhaps? I don't remember. But, once the traditional polynesian, New Zealand and other South Seas dances start, it's really great. Also, they have kids who want to do so come up on stage. They teach them the hula and it's very cute.

The twins really enjoyed it (especially the fire twirler), as did Grandma. We're doing the Hoop Dee Doo this year, so we'll see if we like it as much. We would not hesitate to repeat the luau. Also, perhaps it's because I live in New York City, but $50 for dinner and a show struck me as a real bargain.

We've done Paradise Cove Luau on Oahu and Old Lahiana Luau on Maui and this compared favorably to both -- for considerably less money!

I will be providing a more detailed review in another post, howver we really enjoyed the Luau.

We have done the HDDR twice and were concerned we would not like the luau as much, but we did...

Me and the kids also went up on stage and did a hula.

I have found that although I read reviews on the board, in the end if I'm curious about a place I try it for myself. There are several places that get bad reviews on the boards that we love (i.e. whispering canyon).

We're going to give it a try:D All the times we have stayed at the Polynesian we have never done the Spirit of Aloha. We are going to be at the Polynesian on our 10th anniversary and are celebrating with the kids so we thought it would be a nice way to end the day:D

We really enjoyed the Luau. Especially because we were seated in the front! I thought the food was delicious. The rice was excellent and the chicken was very moist. I would not hesitate to do the luau again. Just for the record, you are really paying for the entertainment not the food. So I wouldn't go expecting gourmet food. Personally I thought the food was better than Ohana's, and my DH and I enjoyed Ohana's. The performer's interaction with the audience is excellent. One of the male dancers (yummy) even pulled me up to teach me a dance. Of course I was extremely embarrassed, but my DH enjoyed my humiliation quite thoroughly! Go and enjoy and experience it for yourself. Only you can be the judge!

We are going to the Spirit of Aloha show this October. I have a question about the rice. Is it just plain rice or is there some sort of seafood in it? I went to the luau a very long time ago before it became the Spirit of Aloha show and I seem to remember something I didn't like about the rice.:( Has the food changed a lot since the original show or is it the same as before? Thanks for a helpful thread!:p

The rice had no seafood in it. I believe it had a few veggies in it, like fried rice.:D

I preordered from the Cali grill for our dinnner there! :D

If you are going Aug 3 I hope it is for the 8:00 show...We went to the 5:15 show and it was so hot that we could not really enjoy it. It was very hot and my two girls were red faced and hair wet it was so hot. We could handle the heat in the parks but when you are sitting down to eat and for a period of time it was just to much. There are ceiling fans but it did not seem to do much good. The food is good but O'hannas is 10x's better. You are really paying for the entertainment. I hope yours is for the last performance of the night because I think that will make a big difference.

We attended the SoA show on 7/22/04 and enjoyed it very much! We were at the 5:15 show and it was hot but we did get comfortable after we sat at the table(helped by the large pitcher of ice water we downed as soon as we sat down).

The first part of the show was cute and we liked the "Hawaiian rollercoster ride".
THe pineapple was as sweet as honey and the mandarin orange/poppy-seed dressing on the salad was yummy. My DD and DH who dislike coconut ,enjoyed the coconut bread!
THe main course/chicken/ribs rice and veggies was good and the waitress was very prompt at refilling our drinks...( She even brought me a wine to go..........LOL) She also brought 3 box lunches for the kids in case they did not like the main dishes.(included a small hot dog..mac and cheese )

I did not care for the rich chocolate dessert but it was a cute volcano presentation.

The special dances.......all kids hula, wedding/anniversary and birthday hula were cute and just enough audience participation.

My 2 year old fell asleep and the staff quickly remove the high chair and made a "bed " for her (with 2 chairs and napkins for a pillow and blankie).

She woke up for the Traditional dances and we all loved it!( DH, DD 15, DS 10 and DD2)

If you go don't forget to get a family pic taken while waiting to go in to the show.........It is one of the few pics I have with all of us in it!
It was well worth the money!
Carol

(PS I did not ask for the wine to go , it was a surprise..........maybe I looked more worn out at the end of our week there than I thought!! HAHAHA)

You would be better off having dinner at Ohana IMO. It's indoors (airconditioned), the food is much better, there are activities for the kids and it is half the price.
