2 questions re: Memorial Day timeframe

We're planning on a DVC trip for week long Memorial Day 2008 trip and I have 2 questions I was hoping to have answered.

1. Does anyone know if the week leading up to Memorial Day would be less crowded than the week following that holiday weekend?

2. We're planning on booking a 2 BR at OKW. Good idea to book our home resort (BCV) 11 months out and switch over to OKW at 7 months?

I would imagine that the week before would be less crowded. Unless the schools start in late July, they won't be getting out before then - and there are very few of those.

You may run into more "local" schools having field trips during that time, but it won't be the massive numbers of students like at Easter or Christmas time.

Figure out which week works best with your schedule (and flights, etc) and book that one!

I go to an annual conference that always starts the day after Memorial Day, and twice it's been at WDW (in 2001 and again in 2005). Both times, I was able to take a "recess" or two in the parks.

My sense (on a scale where 10 is "jammed" and 1 is "no lines anywhere") is they were running in the 5 to 6 range. Ergo, some waits but definitely not a mob scene.

That stated, my sense is most "stand-alone Monday holiday periods" (e.g. Memorial Day, Columbus Day, Verteran's Day, etc). at WDW likely all follow the same general pattern: the week before the holiday weekend, crowds start to build in the Thursday/Friday period, inevitably peaking on Sunday or Monday. They then drop quickly back to non-peak levels . So I suspect the week of Memorial Day will be better than the week preceeding.

Thanks for that insight...I never really thought of it that way! I was thinking more along the lines of people taking off the week following the holiday, but you're right...many people probably plan a long weekend which ends that Monday.

Just another thought on the Memorial Day dynamic: any family crowds you encounter at WDW the week of Memorial day are likely to be from the sunbelt, because that is the region where schools system sessions end in mid to late May. You are not going to encounter a lot of people from the North/ Northeast, since their schools are still open, in the busy "end of session" period (tests, special activities, etc).

In fact, that's been the basis for a recurring complaint from many of the attendees (who are from the North/Northeast) at the conference I mentioned, i.e. "why do the sponors schedule this thing at family resort locations during times when our kids are in school?"
