We did one YEARS ago (1995 I think) when it was slightly different. We were taken by coach to Miami and then flew to the Bahamas (on the RICKETIEST old Laker Airways plane!!) and then stayed at a Bahamian Resort for one night. The next day was free to do excursions at your leisure before flying back to Fort Lauderdale early evening.
To be honest, it was a bit of a waste of time and money. Bear in mind each person on the trip (inc kids) have to pay a departure tax, which even in those days was about $80. It takes a good 3-4 hours to get to Miami, so most of the first day is lost. Personally, we found the Bahamas a bit tacky...may have been nice in 1975, but now its run down and a bit grubby. Maybe someone who has been more recently can give a better review.
On the positive side, the locals are a total blast and we were in stitches the whole time. They are soooooooo laid back you wont believe. Also, the Resort we stayed at, had the most amazing free form jacuzzi...HUGE, hot and just wonderful! Lastly, you DID feel like James Bond walking off the plane when you landed!!!
That same holiday, we also did a trip to Marco Island, Naples and the Everglades which involved a cruise and that was FANTASTIC!! We saw Alligator and snake handling, had an airboat ride, shopped in Naples, then a cruise (with free drinks..mmmmm, rum punch!!) I think Virgin still offer something similar and, in my opinion, it is a MUCH better trip!!
