We will have 2 DAS users and 2 non. When making the preselections, can I put the 4 of us under one DAS for one of the choices, and then put the 4 of us under the other DAS for the other ride choice? I want to make sure if one kid needs to head back to the room, the other kid will still get to use the other ride pick. We also might randomly split up if one kid refuses to go on the other kid's choice.

a DAS holder can not use anothers DAS. so each of yiour DAS will need each preselections. that is also true with park selections. say DAS 1 has Haunted Mansion and DAS 2 also wants to ride both will need the same or close time to ride

I haven't used DAS since Jan 2020 at WDW. I can't remember if we were still doing the umbrellas or not, but I know we had both DAS and we'd get return times for everyone on what I thought was just one of the DAS's. Were they doing this automatically for us without saying anything?

No, they would not have put both DAS users on one DAS user’s Return Time.
Each DAS registered person would have had their own DAS Return Time, but they can both be scheduled at the same time, by tapping the Select All box. If your whole group went on the same attractions, you may not notice it.

My Family only has one DAS Registered Person, so she is automatically selected when we go to make a DAS Return Time. If we had more than 1, they would be listed under the Registered Guest section.
If both DAS 1 and 2 wanted to go on Little Mermaid, they would both be checked to add to that DAS Return Time. Then the Guests Joining would be chosen to include. Tapping the Select All box would add both DAS users and all the other guests to join the same DAS Return Time.
If DAS 1 wanted to go on Little Mermaid, their box would be checked along with the boxes of the ‘Guests Joining’ on that DAS Return Time.
Then DAS 2 could choose another attraction to get a Return Time for and add any of the Guests Joining who are not already on DAS 1’s Return Time.

Ok, so if we're all going on a ride, I can select all of us at once? I don't have to go back in and get the same ride for das 2 separately?

So what happens if we have a return time for all 4 of us and das 1 and me call it a night, but das 2 and dad want to stay and go on the ride? Will the non-das rider automatically be able to ride with das 2? I'm trying to plan for this likely scenario and wondering if should be booking us separately as 2 groups (2 and 2), or ask to make 2 groups when doing the preselections.

You can’t put all four of you on one DAS for a ride . A DAS holder can’t be listed on another DAS for a return time.

The DAS holder must ride - so you should book your DAS return times accordingly. Book as two groups.

From what SueM said above though, since I can book both DAS at the same time by "selecting all," it seems if one DAS rider doesn't go on, the non-DAS riders can still go on because there is one remaining DAS with a return time. It doesn't look like the system differentiates which DAS those riders are tied to when using "select all"?

Maybe? Ask when you do the pre-selections. If they are tied to the first DAS holder, and that person doesn't go on the ride, then the tap in at the turnstile won't work.

That, I don’t know.

There have been reports of CMs following a different process for booking DAS Advance Selections when there is more than 1 DAS holder in the group.
At first, they appeared to be making 2 separate DAS Advance Selections for the same attraction, with some of the ‘Guests Joining’ attached to one and some to the other.
The problem with that was that sometimes the DAS Advance times didn’t line up together.
From screenshots people have posted, it appears that those DAS Advance planning CMs may be able to schedule the whole party under one DAS holder.
I would suggest discussing your scenario (what if one DAS holder doesn’t ride) with the DAS Advance Planning CM.

In your situation, when making DAS Return Times in the park, I would probably not use ‘select all’ for any attraction.
I would make a separate DAS Return Time for each of your DAS holders and choose who to add as ‘Guests Joining’ based on who would be sitting out with the non-riding DAS holder.
Since DAS Return Times are based on current Standby wait time at the time it is made, it‘s likely the Return Time would be the same for both. If it isn’t, just wait until the 2nd DAS Return Time starts to enter the attraction.
The CMs at the Guest Experience umbrellas can help with things like cancelling DAS Return Times or removing guests from a Return Time
