2 BDR vs GV questions from a newbie

Hello all from a Newbie,

Getting ready to book our first DVC Trip WOOHOO! It's our parents 50th so we are taking them and my brother and SIL and hopefully niece. All together there should be 11 of us. I was mapping out (points, bedrooms etc) a GV vs getting 2 -2BDR. Seems like we would have a bit more privacy with the 2 BDR's. Any experience with this? Everyone here is so knowledgable, so I think I have come to the right place.

Here is another dumb question (but could be important for some of our family memebers ) Does each BR have it's own TV? I know I know!! Not there to watch TV but some folks...well...anyway, TIA!!

yes, each bedroom has it own TV and the livingroom has a TV with VCR/DVD - either or both.

as to what is better - depends upon your family.

with mind I generally get a 2-bedroom for my brother and I get either a 1-bedroom or studio for me. We stay at OKW - so the studio has 2 queen beds and 1-bedroom does not....

if you family gets along - the GV can be great.

If not - I would consider getting a 2-bedroom and 2 studios....cheaper points - and sleeps 16....

remember that a studio is as big as most hotel rooms....

only you know what will work best for your family.

More important than the TVs is the bed arrangement. You don't say which resort, so I will address OKW, since that is what I know best. At OKW the GVs have a king bed in the master, a queen sized sleep sofa in the living room, 2 queen beds in one upstairs bedroom, and 2 full size beds in the other upstairs bedroom. There are 4 bathrooms, a full laundry room, kitchen, dining room, and living room. Depending on the bedding needs, this may or may not serve you well. In a 2 bedroom, there are two queen beds in one room and a king in the other plus a queen sleep sofa in the living room. The second bedroom of a 2 bedroom will NOT have a DVD player. Usually it is just the living room TV that has a DVD player in all the villas. That being said, we have stayed in an OKW GV with 11 people in 3 family groups. It worked out fine, but we did have one small child sleeping on the floor in his parent's room, because he was too young to go to the living room alone.

I understand your question because it is the same one I asked myself when my family traveled together--12 adults plus an infant. We ended up with 3 - 2 bedroom lock-offs so that each group could close the door and have complete facilities and privacy. Our family gets along fine but I think that the intensity of the goings-on at WDW can put people more on edge than usual and so I thought it best to allow for "down" time behind closed doors. This also allowed everyone to set personal schedules for sleep. The major downside was that we did not have a big dining area for the one meal we ate as a big group in the villas. (Our rooms were right next to each other, so we still managed okay.) When we do it again, I will do it the same way. Your family may be entirely different. Just sharing our experience.

The floor plan on the DVC site only shows 3 bathrooms. Do some units have 4 and some 3? Or did I overlook one?

(I hope there are 4. Not that we need them. It's just nice to have more than we need. )

you missed it - on the bottom floor close to the kitchen at OKW.

Our home is SSR. Exactly my point, we love each other, but it is nice to close the door and not have to worry about anyone else. But of course I have to do the point shuffle and cross our fingers that we can get what we want when we want. We'll see-if it's meant to be it will all work out!

Just a clarification about the 4th bathroom at the OKW GV...it is technically a 3/4 bathroom because it does not have a bathtub, just a shower. It is very nice though and the shower was great. We stayed at on OKW GV in November and loved it but there were only 6 adults, no kids. With more than 8 adults, I think I'd prefer a 2 bedroom with a studio or two, esp. at OKW where the studios come with 2 queen beds and the points are cheap.

The 4th bathroom is in the hall just outside the door of the master.

Oh, yeah. When I looked at the layout I assumed that area was part of the master bath because of the way the master bath in the 2BR opens up in that direction.

Cool. 10 1/2 months to 3 3/4 baths!

We've done it both ways it does depend on who you're taking with you. One of the things to consider is you cannot always guarantee the units will be co-located. Another is the GV provides great central gathering space for family time and getting everyone together to go out.
