I would never in a million years have time to write a day-by-day trip report, so here are my random thoughts on our 2/21 Eastern Magic trip. This was cruise #3 for my son and I; he turned 8 during the cruise.

We flew in Friday and stayed at the Radisson the night before on the $89 rate I had secured quite a while back. Our room was as nice as always, and this time was directly in front of the koi pond. Very nice! Rented a car from Budegt again at the airport and dropped it off up the street from the Radisson. Hopped on the shuttle, bopped to the terminal, and managed to be first in line. :)

The cruise was, as always, just awesome. :) Getting to sit together for dinner with 3 other DIS families made it that much better!! I really had a ball... they are all just super people. And our sons got along so well, we hardly saw them for much of dinner! I'm sure that made our serving team happy. :)

Servers were Jean (Zan-Zan) and Zita, and they were just so great. Really fun and always made us smile. Head server was Simon, and he was great!! He always had terrific puzzles and riddles for all of us to solve. We had late seating, as always. I don't know how you people do early seating. :)

I am always amazed not only at the eternal freshness of the ship, but in the crew and staff as well. Everyone from the bartenders to the person polishing the railing smiles at you as though you are the first guest to ever board the ship. It makes you feel so happy.

I *love* the new Cove Cafe. It was such a quiet, less-bright, cool, peaceful place to go sit for a while. They have an amazing array of books and magazines -- something for absolutely everyone. And they make yummy caffe latte. :) And for smokers -- finally a place of our own. Outside the Cove Cafe are wonderful little tables for having coffee and reading, with an ashtray at each. Hallelujah! I loved sitting there at night and listening to the soft music at the Quiet Cove pool area.

Now for the rants:

I hated the category 11. Not just because I had cruised in a cat. 7 before, but because it was just way inadequate for us on lots of fronts. I knew it would be a bit smaller, but my son and I were constantly bumping into each other. There is WAY less storage than the other categories -- no steamer trunk, and 4 very shallow drawers. Where were our clothes supposed to go?? And while I could live with the single bath, there is NO reason to not have some sort of storage in there. All that is there is that tine little shelf over the sink. No corner shelves, not even a shelf in the bathtub to put shampoo.

And I knew the room layout, but didn't click that in my mind with the layout of the ship. In these rooms, the bed is sideways -- that is, when the ship rocks, you rock head to foot. Not entirely unpleasant, but rather disconcerting. And I am one of those weirdos who is happier in 20' seas. Someone who does not like movement that much might really be unhappily surprised by the head-toe rocking.

I really had tried to talk myself into being happy with it, because so many before had said that there was little difference between the 11 and other categories other than no window and no split bath, but I really really hated it.

Second rant:
For the love of all that is holy, leave the strollers at home. I still can't fathom why people bring babies onboard, but hey, that's fine. But THERE IS NO ROOM for your lovely Maclaren double-wide in Shutters!! And when you see before you that there is one foot of walk space between the rows of chairs at the pool, use some common sense and don't put your stroller there!!! It boggles my mind.

Last rant:
I heard way more parents snapping pretty meanly at their kids this time... This isn't Disney World -- go lie in a lounger and have a drink or something, and let the poor kids go to the kids' club and have some fun. :)

That is all... any questions? :)

Hi Gina - thanks for the trip report. We just got off the ship on Feb. 14th and I have to join in your rant about the strollers. I can see people bringing them for the ports but is it really necessary on the ship? One stroller took up all the space in the elevator... and most of the time the kids were being held anyways, and the parents were trying to push the stroller without the kids in them... If I can add a rant to your post, there was a dad who had his little girl with him in Treasure's Ketch... He thought it would be cute if he danced with her throughout the store - this went on for over 15 minutes... the store was packed, it was the last night on board and no one could get near the jewellry counter and he seemed to think everyone would enjoy watching this... then he proceeded to twirl her around so many times that she got dizzy and crashed into the glass displays - that hold all the really expensive stuff... Fortunately, nothing fell over and she didn't get hurt but that didn't stop him, he proceeded to dance some more... I have lots of patience for children, but very little for some of the parents who accompany them...

Anyways, I'm glad you had a fantastic time and thanks again for the great trip report!!!

Gina,

You are too funny! I agree 100% with your comment about the strollers!

As I said at breakfast yesterday, thank you for arranging to have our families sit together at dinner. It made the cruise so much more fun for us! We enjoyed discussing everybody's days, letting the boys have fun at dinner and running into each other at other times. I am glad we got a chance to get to know you and Tyler Dean.

Gayl

P.S. I posted some pictures of us on the Yahoo site.

Gina:

There were SOOOOO many little children on this cruise as compared to our last Disney cruise! Dinner was unbelievably loud at the early PLA rotation!

I also noticed more wheel chairs this cruise.

We stayed in a cat 12 this time (last was a 10 or 11 - don't remember) because we were paying for three rooms at first (another story - one had to cancel) and if it weren't for the over-the-door shoe holder, we would have been MISERABLE!

MY dh did comment during the week that at cat 12 is okay for 2 people but adding our 14-yr-old to the mix was a little tight in storage and room.

My step-dil commented that she witnessed a mom change a poop diaper on top of a table near the pool and then placed the diaper in a cloth napkin and put onto a chair (on Sunday). She was sooooo grossed out! People could not believe this woman. After a while, a CM who witnessed what happened alerted someone higher in command who approached the woman about this behavior.

It takes all kinds!!!!!

Hey all-
Highlights

The SURIAL (yummy- hubby, mud, steam, showers, time away from children)

Swimming with a dolphin!

Hanging out on the deck and in the rainforest with DIS pals!

Meeting so many wonderful and fun people!

Our servers- Anton from Bulgaria and Sunny (thailand? Phillipines?)! We all (us gals anyway) wanted to take Anton home!

Sompop- our room host- WOW! Towel Animals rule

Not being given the excellent speech until the last meal!

Drink of the day!

PALO!

A Verandah- many times we imitated Verandah Man!

Lowlights

2500 meals a day (times three) does not make gourmet cuisine- tasty but not fabulous. Sunny returned several tepid and not so yummy meals for us- returning with something different-if not better

Cranky- almost abusive parents- who the heck needs to shake thier kid to make them behave while they are in line to see Cinderella? Who was that guy who seemed to always have his son (by age ten, this is probably not working anymore) with his nose in the corner...
Parents who allowed their kids to run WILD- and I mean WILD all over the ship at all hours of the night.

The comedian at the last variety show- my eight year old now knows that drinking booze makes you steady. Greaaaat.

strollers- a necessary evil...

More to come...

I'd go back in a minute though!

Great reports!! We aren't sailing until July! I know what you all mean about the kids out of control(as well as their parents)! With some people it is all about them!

I'm really enjoying the honesty and candidness of this thread...thanks for the reports!!! For the most part, you all read my mind!

Gina or anyone who has recently done the Eastern, I have some questions about docking.

If you could be specific, I would appreciate it. On the forum board there is a thread about where the ships docks.

At St. Thomas, did you dock at WICO (Havensight near the tram), or Crown Bay or Charlotte Amalie or did you tender in. If you tendered in, where did they take you?

In St. Martin, did you dock at AC Wathery Pier (Point Blanche)Which I believe is right next to Great Bay Beach. Or did you dock somewhere else and tender in?

Thanks, Lorie

Lori,

I just returned from the 2/21 Eastern cruise too. We had a great time! As far as your docking questions go, in St. Maarten, we docked near Great Bay Beach, however we did have to take a water taxi to get there. I am not sure what the name of the pier was, but we did not tender in. In St. Thomas, we docked at WICO and did not tender in. There is a website that shows which cruise ships are docking where in St. Thomas on any given day, but I can't remember the address for it.

Hello fellow 2/21er's! It was great meeting all and agree with everything. I think strollers are needed but not in the most crowded areas of the ship. Lisa sorry we never met even though we sat 20 ft. from each other.

Will add my rant about kids jumping into "murky" Goofy pool from all 3 levels of the deck. Parents were there and did nothing so I did! It clearly states No Jumping but some must think it means no jumping from deck 10.

Only other complaint is availibility of characters at night. With early seating most of the better groupings(Mickey & Minnie together, Lilo & Stitch, etc.) were too late for my kids.

It was great also not getting the excellent speech until the last night with great servers Melwin and Paula.

Cabaret shows were geat and Diversions was very nice. My FIL lost his watch to Mike Super at his cabaret show. British Pub Night, even though it is the last night, was not to be missed.

We were lucky to be upgraded to a verandah cat. 5 and now don't know if we could sail without as we spent a lot of time there while kids chilled inside. Loved deck 7 again.

Cam(DS5.5) was surprised one night with a certificate and pin stating he was the #1 Stitch fan onboard. A CM asked him in Mickeys Mates who his favorite character was. He said Stitch and she said she was friends with him and would tell him. Later that night the cert. was on our door.

Speaking of door, magnetic paper worked great to make signs for the door. It made the room easily identifiable for the kids.

That's all for now,

bruce/woody

Gina-how about those waves Fri. night?

Gayl,

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to get the scoop from people just on because there are a number of sites that list the schedules, but they are all different! For some, it has St. Thomas docking at Charlotte Amalie, but some people say it can not dock here because it is too small.

Thanks again, Lorie

In St. Maarten, your choice is to either take the 15 minute walk to downtown or the water taxi. The water taxi is a bargain at $5 for an all-day pass!

Question to the other 2/21 cruisers --- how long did it take you to get rid of your sea-legs? I could have sworn that Castaway Cay was moving as was the Hyatt (did the dayroom the day of disembarkation) and my house too!

Lisa

Lisa,

I found myself swaying a little as I washed dishes on Sunday night! Sadly, I had to make dinner for my family and wash all the dishes by myself (no waitstaff to take care of everything!). I am really missing the cruise and all the excellent service!

Gayl

It took a couple of days to wear off. As far as everything else, when I get home I ask what the chef recommends and I get a blank stare and a plate of food:D . Just kidding as today is DW's 40th bday.

woody

My kids have been playing "Dinner at the Restaraunt"
They plan menus, act as servers, and fuss over us!

Sadly,they do not clean up!

I really enjoyed this cruise as a single mama I appreciated the kids club the most. So did DS - age 11.

I loved our big table of DIS members at dinner.
I loved meeting Dis members at the sailaways.
I loved the deck 4 chairs.
I loved falling asleep under the trees at Maegens Bay.

Using magnetic paper sounds like a plan... what exactly were you taliking about. I think I have a clue, but would love any ideas you have for helping DS8 get to her room.

Sailing on 10/16/2004 and can't get anyone to tell me how to get one of those cute little counter thingies!

I was on this 2/21 cruise and also made magnetic signs. At most office supply stores(Officemax, Office Depot) you can find Magnet Sheets. Mine are made by Avery, #3270. They have paper on one side and a very thin magnet on the back. It prints thru your regular ink jet printer.

It worked great to mark our room and I made a special one for my sons birthday.

So did you like the Eastern ports??? I just booked an Eastern Cruise on the Magic for Josie and I.:hyper: It is pretty far ahead, but it gives me plenty of time to pay for it. I got one of the secret porthole rooms on deck 5 for October 15,2005. I got a great price through mouseearsvacation.com.::MickeyMo

I am going on a ALL GIRL trip on Royal Caribbean in Jan and it goes to Key West and Cozumel. So I decided the Eastern would be good for my Disney trip.

I know you travel alone with DS and you seem to have a great time. I hope to add a third person before I leave. I also have friends and family that may end up booking. No one is as crazy as me to book this far ahead. Gives me something to look forward too. I am excited about planning already!:hyper:

I should have went ahead on the Magic that I had planned when my husband walked out on us. Oh well it was too stressful then.

You know I told you I had a great guy in my life and he is wonderful, but I told him I need a break and time to myself. I am still working through a lot of issues. It has been difficult, but I am working through it. I told him if we are meant to be together then things will work out.:( I am just so confused..... It is hard being a single Mom. This may be a mistake, but I think I need time to figure out what I really want. I don't want to stay with someone just because I don't want to be alone!:(

I have to worry about DD and I right now......So I am excited we have a cruise on the Magic to look forward too.

Hope things are going good for you! Take care,

Michelle:wave2:
