THE QUICK AND DIRTY DETAILS:

I've never done a pre-trip report, but decided to give it a shot! :surfweb:

I've looked at other reports, and I like to read the ones that fit my family in some way. So, if you're looking for a report for a trip in February, with lots of adults and 2 babies, staying at a condo offsite, and spending time at Universal and/or Sea World, and possibly taking the Amtrak Autotrain, this is your trip report!

So far, this is who is going on the trip: me and my husband. We celebrated our 25th anniversary-Feb. 5th-at Disney World 2008. So where else should we spend our 30th?? :rotfl:

OUR DISNEY HISTORY:

My husband went waaaay back in the 70s, with his mom, brother and sister. (dad could not come.) Back then it was just the Magic Kingdom, and only the Contemporary, the Polynesian and what was the Disney Inn-now The Shades of Green. They stayed at the Contemporary, toured for 2? 3? days, and then went to the beach-he doesn't know which one.

Me, I never went growing up. Big family, way too expensive! We might as well have gone to the moon.

After our marriage, we had 2 daughters very quickly: first one born just before my 21st birthday, second just after I turned 23! So, they're 2 years and 2 months apart. We found out that I was pregnant-very unexpectedly!-when they were 9 and 11. We had actually started kicking around the idea of going in the fall of 1995, but the baby would be born in September! No way did I want to take a newborn on mine and the girls' first trip, so we quickly moved it up to May. I was 5 months pregnant.

That was a fantastic trip! We stayed at the brand-new All Star Sports and loooved everything! My only regret was that I could not ride things like Splash/Space Mountain. Animal Kingdom didn't exist. My husband was skeptical that we could actually spend a whole week at Disney World, but realized that Epcot and the Studios-which didn't exist on his trip as a child-really made a week's stay necessary, indeed, not long enough!

We went back in September of 2000. We went during the week our youngest-a 3rd girl!- turned 5. Another great trip. Because we were a family of 5, we stayed at the Marriott Orlando World Center. Wow-what a nice hotel!

After that, our oldest went off to college in the fall of 2001, the second went off to Poland to be an exchange student. September 11, 2001 was a very scary day for her especially, because we live only about 20 minutes from Shanksville, Pa. Both girls heard news reports of a plane hitting the ground "somewhere in Somerset County, Pa.", "80 miles east of Pittsburgh", "not far from Johnstown, Pa.", etc., and had no idea WHERE more specifically, but knowing that all the descriptions could be us!!

The phone system shut down completely around here, so neither daughter could call us after a while, which made for frantic times! Obviously, we were fine.

Anyhow, we spent the years 2001-2007 putting the 2 older girls through college. I realized our 25th anniversary was coming up, and started thinking of where we should go. I also wanted to take our youngest, who was 12 at the time, to Disney World, because she barely remembered the 2000 trip. We decided to combine the two! We also decided to drive there, which was fine with me. Our oldest was living in the Maryland suburbs of DC, so we drove there, and left on our trip from her place.

I almost forgot, last minute, we decided to take my niece! Her parents had just split up, and she was having a rough time. :( Because we were driving, she easily fit into our car, and it was rather inexpensive to add her to our stay-we used the dining plan. She was young enough to be a "child" in Disney's eyes too!

We stayed 5 nights at the Wilderness Lodge, and 3 nights at the Dolphin, using cash + points. We all loved the Wilderness Lodge sooo much! I'd love it even more if it were an Epcot resort, because I love Epcot so much more than the Magic Kingdom.

Next trip was November of 2009, just after Thanksgiving. This time, it was just me, our youngest daughter, the same niece-and her little brother and her mom, my sister. We stayed at Port Orleans Riverside. I liked it, but it's certainly not my first choice for a Disney hotel.

We had the free dining plan, and had a great time. My daughter and I would be at rope drop every day, and my sister and her 2 kids would sleep in, eat a leisurely breakfast and get to the park around 10-11. We'd spend most of the rest of the day together, eat supper together and take a bus back together. It worked out well.

I've always wanted to go to the Food and Wine Festival, so my husband and I went last November, from the 5th to the 8th. I'd bought us each a 10-day non-expiring ticket a few years before, for Christmas. We stayed at the Swan, again using cash and points, and spent one day doing nothing in particular, one day at Epcot, and one day at the Animal Kingdom. We went straight to the airport from the Animal Kingdom late in the afternoon, and were home by late that evening!!

So, we still have 8 days on our non-expiring tickets. We also have 10 admissions to water parks, from our trip in 2000!! At that time, the ticket structure was different, I don't remember, but we had admissions to the water parks built in our tickets then. Our oldest was sick for a few days, so we spent an off-day touring a timeshare (strictly for the bonus of $100 Disney dollars!) and hanging out at the hotel pool. Because we didn't go to water parks for 2 days that I had planned to, we still had them on our tickets. Back in 2008, my husband took our 2000 tickets with us, they scanned them and told us we had a total of TEN admissions to either Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach! Yay! I plan to use at least 4 of the 8 days up, and we will probably go to Universal Studios and/or Sea World! And of course, a water park day-if it's warm enough!!

WHERE WE'RE STAYING AND WHO WE ARE:

We'll be at Silver Lake Resorts. We ended up buying timeshares, both in Vermont, both bought off Ebay for $1. One is for week 51, at Mountainside Resort in Stowe, and we deposited it to trade. We ended up trading it for a 3-bedroom unit at Silver Lakes! A full kitchen!! Multiple bathrooms!!

If we all go, my husband and I will have one bedroom, our oldest and her partner will have a second, and our second and her husband will have the third. The second daughter has a daughter of her own, she just turned one at the end of July. They are also expecting a second child, who will be approximately 8-9 months old on the trip.

Our youngest will be a senior next year. Missing school then could be a problem. I hope we can work it out, but so far, she is an honors student, who gets almost always straight As. We don't pressure her to get them, she is OCD enough to stress over her grades, so we deliberately are very low-key about grades. She's been known to simply forget assignments and then fail to do them-that's what brings her grades down! It's obviously way too early to worry about it now. She's one of the youngest in her class, she just turned 16 and started her junior year in September.

Oldest daughter has been in a relationship for over 2 years now with an older man. Older than her dad, actually! We all love him a lot, he has 4 sons, the oldest isn't much younger than our daughter. They are very unlikely to decide to have kids, though, which bums me some, but hey. That's life, right?

So, if all come, it will be me-I'll be 50-, my husband, who will be 51, oldest daughter will be 30 and her partner, who will be 51 too. Our second daughter will be 28, her husband will be 26, their oldest will be 2 1/2, and the new baby will be 8-9 months old. Our youngest will be 17. She'll be sleeping on a couch!!

Oh, yeah: the Autotrain!

We're just kicking this idea around now. Driving down was nice because we didn't have to worry about overweight luggage. Liquids being under the limit, or possibly exploding in our checked baggage. Heck, we brought wine! Driving is definitely appealing, but it brings all the negatives along with it: mostly, the depressing drive home.

We may drive down and then just take the Autotrain back. That will add something to look forward to during the trip!

We also may add a few days at the end of the trip, just for me and my husband. We loved the Swan so much that I'm going to keep looking at the SPG site to see if I can get a few nights there, probably using cash and points. I use my SPG AMEX card as much as I can to get as many points as I can. That's how we stayed there before! You can get a night there-if it's available-for $60 and 4,000 points! Cash and points aren't available for our stay yet, I'll have to keep checking.

Because this trip will be focused partly on the toddlers and partly on a visit to Universal, I think adding a few days at the Swan, to visit Epcot, will be a great way to wrap up the stay. There's not much for babies to do at Epcot, so we may not even take them there. But, if we stay at the Swan after everyone else leaves, my husband and I can get our Epcot fix in! Everyone's a winner!! Well, really just me and him. :)

EVERYONE ELSE'S DISNEY HISTORY:

So, my husband went to Disney World in the 70s; on a trip with me and the 2 older girls in May of 1995; with me and all 3 girls in September of 2000; with me and our youngest and my niece in Feb. 2008, and with just me in Nov. 2010.

I went on my first trip in May of 1995, (5 months pregnant) Feb. 2008 on the 25th anniversary trip; November 2009 with my youngest; my sister and her 2 kids; and November 2010, just him, for the Food and Wine Festival.

Oldest daughter, May of '95; on a trip with her school during Christmas week 1999 through New Year's Day 2000, then September 2000 with us. Since then, she did get to go when she was a nanny, in Feb. 2008, a few weeks after our trip. Her trip was free! She spent some time on her own.

Second daughter, May of '95; September 2000. She got to go to EuroDisney while she was an exchange student, however! I don't feel bad that she's "behind" on her trips, she's been all over Europe!

Third daughter is the spoiled one: she's been there in Sept. 2000; Feb. 2008; Nov. 2009 AND just this past spring, with her school.

My son-in-law hasn't been there since he was in high school, I think. I'm not sure.

My other "son-in-law" hasn't been there for at least 10 years too.

And of course, the existing and the future grandchild have never been there!!
