A long report, just a warning
This is my first go at a trip report, hopefully I don't bore y'all!
I'm going to touch on the ports of call mostly, as the days at sea were basically uneventful ones.

This was our 3rd cruise overall, but our first with Disney. Being DVC'ers we decided we could survive skipping the parks this year to give DCL a try. We looked into using points for one of us and cash for the other, but in the end went with points all the way. After crusing with Princess last year on the Eastern Caribbean and enjoying our balcony, we booked a veranda room #6098.

Knowing how the weather can be flying out of Detroit in the winter we left 2 days early and stayed at the Radisson. Thursday was pretty much lost to travel, but Friday we were out and about enjoying the warmer FL temps. We missed out on the meet Friday night as we hooked up with family and by the time we got back, there was no one out by the pool.

Saturday morning we got up and with great anticipation, headed toward KSC to get a glimpse of the shuttle landing. There were hundreds of people at the Visitors Center and we all were charged to be part of this experience. As time wore on, you could feel the change in the mood of the people in the lot. It went from excitement, to confusion as 9:15 came and went. Especially since we saw a KSC security car go tearing out of the parking lot at about 9:05. (I'm getting goosebumps over again just typing this)
Somebody had their car radio tuned to a local news station, and eventually we all tuned in too. NASA was launching a "contingency plan" we didn't know the lingo, but felt it wasn't good. Everyone was looking around in disbelief and couldn't beleive our ears when we heard for the first time that they thought the shuttle was "lost". We all fell into silence, people gathered together in silent prayer. Our hearts just broke for those lost on the Columbia and their families who were waiting for the landing.
A horrible tragedy for sure, but we all prayed for them to now be in "a better place".

Eventually, the groups broke up we got into our car and left. Once we got back to the Radisson, there was more information, and even video available in just that short amount of time.

We returned our rental at Avis and hopped on their shuttle over to the ship. Ahhh, The Magic....she really is a classy looking ship!
Dropped our luggage with the porters and headed for security. Check in was a breeze and soon enough we were on line. We were fairly far back but it moves quickly once they begin the boarding process. Got our picture taken and made our way on board to be announced. Kinda hokey, but still cool for us first timers! We went to check out our stateroom and drop our bags. Then off to Topsiders for lunch. We didn't do Palo or any Spa things so no rushing off for ressies. After lunch we wandered all over the ship. We loved all the artwork! We got through the safety drill, dropped our life preservers in the room, grabbed our cameras and headed up for the sail away party. Disney really does it right!
We had LAPLAPL for our rotation, late seating. All adults at our table, and curiously enough, all DVC members and one DisBoards lurker! Great group of people, we had a blast at each dinner and were usually the last one's out of the restaurant each nightl. I'm sure they all loved us!

Key West was ok, we didn't book any excursions, and that was fine. We spent the day wandering in and out of the shops, walked to the Southernmost Point in the US (looong walk!), saw Hemmingway's house and all that good stuff. We were back on ship by 4 or so and eventually wandered up on deck for the sunset. Had a great spot for picture taking, loved the flyover by the biplanes and even a flyover by some Pelicans!

Grand Cayman was great. We rented a car from Budget and after my 6'4" DH saw the size of that Suzuki Jimmy, he said , "You drive". Lovely. Ok, well, let's see, they drive on the LEFT side of the road in Grand Cayman, and the driver's side of the car we had was on the RIGHT. I can't tell you how many times I attempted to use the turn signals and actually ended up turning on the wipers!
It's a beautiful island, we drove up to Rum Point, what a picture postcard spot that is! Found the "blow holes" along the coastline, that was completely mesmerizing. We made the trip to Hell, kind of a tourist trap if you ask me. We made it to Seven Mile beach, but it looked terribly crowded. It was great to explore on our own, at our own pace. If something looked interesting, we just stopped to check it out. We booked a trip to Stingray City with Stingray City Charters. There were 6 of us along with our "Captain". What an experience! We all got to hold a Stingray as well as feed them. Really amazing creatures. We also had time to snorkel at the barrier reef where Leland, our Captain ,fed the moray eels and nurse shark. We had all kinds of time to explore the reef and see all the creatures living in there.
I know others have used Captain Marvin's or Captain Brian's, I would recommend Stingray City Charters to anyone. They go out in smaller boats so you get more one on one attention, but no professional pictures or video of your time with the Stingrays.

On Cozumel we had booked the Dolphin Swim at Chankanaab with Dolphin Discovery. We grabbed a taxi over to the park and had plenty of time before our 2 p.m. swim. We checked out the tour of the "ruins" and had good seats for the sea lion show. We snorkeled for quite a while and saw tons of fish. I couldn't tell you what kind we saw, but we saw lots of them! The park is very clean and well kept. There were lifeguards at the beach, and they kept a close eye on all that were in the water.
Time came to get ready for our swim. They provide lockers for you to store your gear, which was great. Each person is issued a life jacket, and then you watch a short video on how to behave around the dolphins. Then the moment we all had been waiting for..the walk out to the swim "pen". They have a videographer and photographer there and tell you when you are interacting with the dolphins to make sure to look at the camera and smile! Our two dolphins were Scarlet and America. We started out on the platform with each of us getting and giving a kiss to Scarlet and then a handshake to America. We all got to do the dorsal fin tow, wow what powerful swimmers! We also swam out in pairs and held a bar up out of the water and Scarlet and America jumped over the bar. Next was the "foot push", you lie out on your stomach with your arms out like Superman, your knees must be locked, and feet pointing downward. Before you know it, you feel something touch your feet and you are being propelled accross the water at what seems like lightspeed! You actually are pushed up out of the water to almost a standing position. Incredible!!!
Afterwards we all got back into the water and formed a circle, Scarlet and America weaved in and out between us, allowing us to pet them as they swam by.
Absolutely an experience of a lifetime!!

Castaway Cay. We walked down to the family beach because we intended on snorkeling around the "trail". What gorgeous weather we had, and the water temps made it easy to be in there for about an hour and a half! It's a fairly large course, even though there were quite a few people out there with us, we really felt like we had it to ourselves. We were pretty wiped out afterwards
:D Lunch at Cookies was delicious. We stayed a little longer after lunch but the sun was hot, and there wasn't too much shade to be had. Our impressions of Castaway Cay.....
We enjoyed it very much. We did think that some of the sunken treasures on the snorkel trail might be too far out for some younger snorkelers. But overall, Disney got it right one more time. A great place to hang out, clean, well kept and everyone on the island was very friendly.

For those of you that stuck with me through this rambling account of our trip, thanks! If you have any questions, I'll do my best to answer them, and I promise my answers won't be so long winded!
To Marie and Brendan.....I beat you to the trip report, so now you get to fill in all the blanks on meals and "stuff". Hope you had a great trip through FL and I look forward to reading your trip report.

Hi fellow Michigander,

I really enjoyed reading your post. We disembarked from the ship (a wonderful 7-day eastern) the day you got on and were driving to Orlando when we heard about the shuttle. It was quite a shock to us as well.

This was our first Disney Cruise and compared to others we've done, we thought it was wonderful as well. My parents who've also been on RCCL, thought that Disney does it right too!

Interestingly enough, we listened to a talk about DVC while on board and guess what? They hooked us! We just put the down payment down yesterday for 200 points at BCV. With a 3 and 4 year old, we figured we'd get many years of use from it. And let's face it, Disney really DOES it right so you can't go wrong!

Thanks for the great report and here's to many more Disney vacations!

Deb

Hi Deb,
Thanks for your kind words about my post.

Congrats on your purchase into DVC. Welcome Home!
It's so cool to hear that for the first time you enter your resort for your first trip using your points! We're neighbors at DVC as well as here in MI, we're at the Boardwalk. You'll love the BCV, as they say, it's all about location, location. location!!!

Here's to many years of vacation fun for you and your family!

I have heard a lot of people compare DCL and different cruise lines, like RCCL... But, not a lot about Princess.

I am assuming that it is quite a different cruise 'experience' between the two lines. Since you have done both, could you do a quick rundown on your thoughts and personal things you really noticed.

Thanks!

We cruised on the Golden Princess to the eastern caribbean. If memory serves me right, the Golden holds something like 3600 passengers and 1800 crew. We felt lost among the masses. We could never find a chair by the pool ! Princess has "freestyle" dining as well as the 2 set seatings. Talk about confusing! We opted for the late seating so we could have more time to enjoy the ports. However, Princess had their shows scheduled to accommodate those on the "freestyle" dining. We never saw a single show until the final night where they had the crew talent show. The meals were adequate, but nothing to rave about.
The ship's decor was nice, but what we loved the most was our balcony. It was quite spacious and we spent quite a lot of time out there. Our veranda on the Magic was not as big.
As far as the crew on Princess, the were fine, but they just weren't up to the standards of Disney. We don't travel with kids, but noticed that Princess didn't seem to keep the kids interested in their activities. I heard kids on Disney asking to go back to their clubs 'cause they didn't want to miss any of the good stuff.

Don't get me wrong, we enjoyed our cruise with Princess, but we will think twice about getting on one of their big ships again. We really felt lost , and missed the individual attention that we had gotten on Norwegian and Disney.

We loved the decor on the Magic. There is tons of artwork everywhere you look. We never ran into a crew member who didn't smile and say hello. We had some long conversations with certain crew members who loved sharing their experiences on board ship as well as telling us about their home countries. The food was excellent, we never went away hungry, there were so many choices and all were quite tasty. We enjoyed our dining rotation, but have to admit we don't mind having the same dining room each night. But hey, when in Rome......
The caliber of shows on Disney were excellent. I heard some grumblings about a couple of the shows, like Hercules the MUSEical....but after talking to those people I found out that they never saw the movie. It really is one of those shows where you won't get most of the "gags" unless you saw the movie. We really enjoyed Disney Dreams and the lead female singer in the Lion King section has an amazing voice!

All in all, Disney does it right. They have guest service down to a science. I never heard any member of the crew tell a guest that their particular request was impossible. They always said they will check and see what can be done.
One major reason we will cruise Disney again is that we had an issue arise where we weren't all that happy with the resolution, and by having an adult conversation with certain Cast Members we were able to work out a solution that was agreeable to all involved. I know that we wouldn't have been given that consideration on Princess, we were just one of way too many onboard to get any kind of personal service.
Hope this helps.

Hi Judy. We were on the 2/1 also. We drove from MCO to Kennedy Space center that morning. It sounds like we were in the parking lot together. We were at the back of the lot, left side and the police car was just across the way behind us. I knew when the golf cart went whizzing by and then the cop sped away something was wrong. Did you see the fighter jets sudden take off in another direction? That was truly a heart wrenching experience. We had a hard time explaining to my DD8 what had happened. After all, we got her all psyched up to see the shuttle and then trying to explain why it didn't land. Very difficult. We were dazed the entire day.

Great trip report. We took the trolley to the Southernmost Point. It seemed like a long way in that! Must have been a really long walk!
Kris

Kris,
Sounds like we were in the same area at KSC. Were you near the yellow Ford Escape with the guy with the killer telescope? I don't envy you trying to explain things to your DD, as an adult it was hard for ME to comprehend! We too were dazed for most of the day, but the sailaway party helped take our minds off it for a while.

In Key West, we walked the length of Duval Street cut over to the Southernmost Point, and walked back up Whitehead Street. It was definitely a long walk! Now you have my curiosity peaked, I wonder if I can find the distances somewhere:confused:

We just got back home from a trip to MA to visit family and got caught in the blizzard 28 inches of snow! Oh what I'd give to be back on the cruise!!

Judy, loved the report. I am so excited to do the Western stops! I am the only "strong" swimmer in my family so I anticipate that it will only be me with the Dolphins but how about a 7 year old with the sting rays?

He can swim and with a life vest (which I am sure they require) he can hold his own very well. I think he would love this! Did you see any kids out there?

Did you wear life vests with the Dolphins?

I am on my way to buy the passporter to learn more about the excursions!

Thanks.

Mitcam,
Thanks for the compliment on my report:D
We really enjoyed the Western itinerary, we cruised the Eastern last year with a different cruise line.
To answer your questions......

You really don't have to be a strong swimmer to swim with the dolphins. Yes, everyone wears a life vest, it's the first thing they do is fit you for one! They have 2 trainers out there with you, one on the platform, and another in the water with you. The one in the water helps you out to where you need to be for the individual tricks. I'm a strong swimmer, and he even pulled me out a couple of times. Your 7 year old can do the dolphin encounter, where they stand on a platform. I would check out their website at
www.dolphindiscovery.com to get the definitive answers on age limits.
As for the stingrays...we had some young ladies on our tour. We only totalled 7 of us on our boat including our Captain. They did supply life vests for the kids and even the adults if they preferred. Where we anchored our boat the water was a little higher than some of the others. I'm 5'11" and the water came up about mid-chest on me. The girls on our tour were probably about 5 and 8, and both loved being in the water but couldn't touch bottom. Even though they had to hang with their parents....the youngest one was hanging on for dear life when she heard a lady in the group next to us let out a blood curdling scream when a Stingray brushed by her! I have to admit, it does take a little getting used to, I had more than one Stingray come up and think my foot was food. It was the weirdest sensation!! Actually it kind of tickled, but I can see how people could get a little freaked by it!

Feel free to ask more questions, hopefully I can answer them, or atleast point you in the right direction for answers.

Yes, we were also on the 1st Feb cruise (and also the 8th Feb)!
We didnt find out about the shuttle tragedy until 3.00pm, when we rang home to England and were informed. We hadnt seen news reports, or heard anything from fellow passengers while travelling to Port Canaveral. In fact, we even chatted about how nice it would have been to be at KSC for the shuttle arrival. Naturally, there were many sad faces as we sailed away, with KSC in view and whilst we were glad to be on vacation, our hearts went out to family and friends of those lost earlier that day.

However, as we know, life goes on - and we had a wonderful 2 weeks on board.

I also agree that the staff are terrific! Nothing was too much trouble for them, and they have a permanent DISNEY SMILE at all times!

Indeed, we did prefer the Eastern trip, but loved Key West. Not sure I would bother again staying at Mallory Square for the sunset! You get a much better view from "The Magic"! Grand Cayman apparantly is still British - but Ive yet to find anywhere here in England that resembles GC! Apart from the Hard Rock Cafe!

Cozumel was lively and fun - especially Carlos & Charlies!

Castaway Cay is paradise!

The eastern trip is far more scenic, for those of us who appreciate beautiful beaches and lush green trees.

Just a query: Can someone please explain to us why - on both weeks, some guests just sit around the pool all day and never take advantage of the lovely places that the ship visits? It seems an awful lot of money to spend, when you can do that in any town. Why go on a cruise? I know the sunshine is wonderful, but PLEASE make the most of life: its way too short as it is!

Also, a gentle "dig" at the 2 ladies on the 8th Feb cruise, who - EVERY EVENING decided to arrive for dinner up to 1 HOUR late! Perhaps they wanted to make a GRAND ENTRANCE, but in fact they annoyed fellow guests, and their poor servers then had to work many extra hours over the course of the week!(They work up to 90 hours a week as it is!) Disney being Disney never complained to these selfish women, but surely if you turn up during the dessert course, you should just be offered dessert and coffee! Good Manners cost nothing. Hopefully, these women will NOT be returning to The Magic. Had they been seated with us at dinner, they may have been WEARING their food by the end of the vacation!!!

Well done Disney - another wonderful vacation for us! Nat.

Great report - thanks for sharing. We leave on the Western on May 10th and your report has really gotten me in the Disney mood.

We sailed on the Wonder Feb. 2nd and found out about the shuttle as soon as we landed in Orlando on Feb. 1st. Made for a very sad day.

BTW - did you happen to see two crazy people waving to the Magic with Mickey Hands as you passed Grills (a bar and grill) on your way out to sea on Saturday. That was DH and I!

Glad to hear you had such a MAGICal trip. Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks, very nice report.

Did you book yourself your dolphin swim ? How long in advance did you book ?

Thanks for all the kind words about my trip report.

Mary,
Yes I did see Mickey hands waving at us. I had read that you were going to be there waving at us. I broke away from the party just at the right time we were sailing by you.....great timing!

momofofo22,
We booked the swim on our own thru www.dolphindiscovery.com
and I believe my husband made the arrangements sometime in November for our February cruise. We did not get our first choice of times, but to be honest the 2 pm swim couldn't have worked out better. We got off the ship and went straight for a taxi to take us to Chankanaab. We had loads of time to explore the park and snorkeled to our hearts content. That said, I would recommend getting your reservations as soon as possible. They limit the groups to 8 swimmers so they fill up fast.

Hope this helps.

Judy:jester:

Thank you for the information.

I will make the reservation as soon as possible.

What a great trip report!!! We are going on our first Disney Cruise in Novemer on a WEstern Itinterary.

Regarding your Dolphin encounter - your husband booked in himself - if for some reason your day at Cozumel had been cancelled by Disney - would you have been able to get a refund from them?

Just wondering.

I can do the Dolphin encounter $30.00 less per person if I book it myself, but am concerned about getting a refund if we are unable to dock in Cozumel due to bad weather.

Any ideas?

I just double checked with my hubby about what happens if Disney doesn't make it to Cozumel. I can't seem to put my hand on the document at the moment, but Dolphin Discovery does have a policy that you will not be charged if the cruise ship does not make it. I'm not sure if that policy is stated on their homepage or if we got it with our confirmation. We corresponded with them via email, and they were very helpful in answering all our questions.
Sorry I can't find the specific paper to be able to quote their cancellation policy for you, it's somewhere in the pile of papers from the cruise.

Try emailing them at dolphindiscovery.com, that way you'll get the straight scoop!

If you do book with them, enjoy! It was the highlight of our trip!

Hey,
my dad is from allen park, my aunt lives in muskegon, and my uncle lives in farmington hills, so I have a lot of family in Michigan. anyway, it sounds like a blast. my family and I (15) go on the western in july. two things, first of all what was the dining rotation like? for example, which nights were the formal nights with the catpain's gala and then the tropical night and the small world night? I am extremely confused with how that works. Also, which were you favorite sites to visit? cozumel sounds amazing. anyway, I hope you had a great time and Go State!!!!
