1st Time using DVC

My wife and I just become members this past December (OKW). We are going to OKW with our three young children(two 5 year olds and a three year old) and wife's parents this coming May. Is there any advantage to purchasing park passes through member services? Is there a discount? Any suggestions as to the type of pass we should purchase (we are staying for 5 days, are planning on only visiting MK and AK - no water parks?

Welcome home!! I think most members will agree when I say that you will love your DVC! As far as park passes go, you can get a DVC discount only on length-of-stay passes and annual passes. Do you have a Disney Club card? You can get park pass discounts thru that. Have fun!!

Congrats on your DVC purchase! You will love OKW - I joined there in '94, and I have never regretted it. As far as passes, since you are visiting only the 2 parks, you might want single day tickets, but I would go on and purchase a 4-day park hopper. You might want to go back to MK for a parade or something after AK closes. If you have a DIsney Club membership, you can get a small discount on these. You can purchase them before your trip at a Disney Store, or you can wait til you get to WDW. I like to buy before I go so I have one expense out of the way, so to speak. If you are a AAA member, they also sell discounted park hoppers, but I am not sure if they sell the 4-day. If you do decide to buy at WDW, I would definitely buy at the Guest Services desk at OKW, rather than standing in line at the park. The unused days on your park hopper would be good until you use them, so you would have a step-up for your next trip. That's another great thing about DVC - you KNOW there will always BE a next trip!

There are two discount programs through DVC. One is a 10% discount on UMP passes that cover you through your entire stay. The second is a new program available only to DVC members called Magical Years Pass. You pay $749 (adult or child) per pass. For 4 of the next 5 years you get 5 days per year admission to MK, Epcot, MGM and AK with freedom to park hop. You are also allowed a choice of two per year from PI, the water parks or Disney's Wide World of Sports.

All other types of tickets don't get any DVC discount. You may want to consider getting a Disney Club for discounts on these. Many DVC members purchase an AP if they are going to be visting for more than 8 days in any 12 month period.

Just curious, any particular reason you're skipping Epcot and MGM?

I was curious as to why you were skipping the other two also. When our kids were "kids", they loved Epcot the best. Now as adults, they still do. You don't say how long you are staying. We usually try to take 2-3 trips in a calander year and get an annual pass during that time. Then we stay home a year after the pass expires and start the process over again. Last year we were in the parks 29 days total, so we figure it cost us $10 per person per day. I think that is a great deal! Of course, the down side is that we won't be going to Disney World until next January now!

We were in Disney this past fall and the kids REALLY liked MK and AK. Epcot didn't do much for them. We planned on, but didn't make it to MGM. How does it compare to MK and AK for "the little ones?"

MGM doesn't have quite as much for little ones, but they would like all the characters here that are not in MK (toy story specifically) and Little meraid show, Beauty and the Beast show, muppet vision, Doug live, etc. There is quite a bit there.

Don't forget about "Bear" at MGM. You get to sit on the floor right in front of him and his friends. Your 3-year-old will love it if he/she is familiar with Bear. Also, Fantasmic is terrific! It is a little scary as is Voyage of the Little Mermaid, but my 3-year-olds made it through. They also went absolutely nuts meeting ALL of the Toy Story 2 characters...you may want to try MGM!

I noted the other day on this website home page a discount service that was very close to the discount you would have recieved via the Disney Club Card. I mention this fact in case you don't have the card. I am not sure Disney Card is worth the cost of $ 29.95, which was something you were able to get free a last year. I enjoy Disney; however, I don't see them giving any great discounts.
