$1B Disneyland Resort Expansion - OC REGISTER

They're not going to expand the park into the backstage areas behind Toontown, the location of the farm, etc. Those are needed. That's where they store the parade floats, have rehearsal facilities, launch fireworks, etc.

You also forgot to mention the Simba parking lot.

Simba is the "parking lot next to PPH" in my post and Pumbaa is the "Disney Way & Clementine" parking lot I mentioned.

If you look at this map, you can see the horse farm on the right and Mickey & Friends on the left. All that parking next to Mickey & Friends belongs to Disney and they could move a lot of buildings over there, even the horse farm, but then they'd have to expand the berm to preserve the sealed off feel from the real world that Disneyland is famous for.

I've always hoped they'd build a water park in Simba, but a water park just isn't as practical in So Cal as it is in FL.

There were rumors when Disneyland bought the Grand Hotel in the late 1970's that Disney was going to reroute the Monorail to it and doll it up. That was when Disney didn't own any hotels in Anaheim at all. Instead they just flattened the hotel.

I wouldn't mind seeing mini golf come back and I can't believe they didn't buy the Anaheim Plaza Hotel, which sold for only $47 million. It is a much better property than the Carousel.

Disney bought the Carousel Inn, I wonder if that is part of the expansion plan?

the thought is they plan to demolish it and build a sky bridge type walking suspended aparatus do hickey. and build a parking garage behind it

In another article about this from the Orange County Register, it mentions the possibilities of where some of the Star Wars and/or Marvel stuff could go:

http://www.ocregister.com/articles/disney-668814-billion-falcon.html

It mentions that Toontown and the Big Thunder Ranch area have been considered, but that they are not as likely now, both for their own reasons (the former is popular with children and must close during fireworks, the latter is a moneymaker due in part to its use for private events).

I know I've said this countless times before, but in this context, I think that it bears repeating that I hope that this is true and they use some of the spots that are more likely, which include, according to the article, Tomorrowland, Hollywoodland, and behind Cars Land.

Anyone know how much the current parking structure cost? I hope a boring parking garage doesn't eat up half the expansion funds... And if they built a fancier hotel than the GCH, they'd charge so much that no one I know could afford to stay there! But I would love an additional Star Wars attraction, or something with the superheroes even a dedicated meet and greet space. Does anyone have any speculation about what is going on in Innoventions?

A parking structure the size of M&F could easily cost a good portion of $1B. I'm pretty sure Disney got Anahiem to pay for the current structure and leases if for like $1/yr

According to the LA Times M&F cost $90 million
http://articles.latimes.com/1996-10-09/news/mn-52109_1_disneyland-expansion
In all, $450 million of city money will be invested in improvements to the city's tourism area. This includes street improvements, landscaping, utilities and a $90-million parking garage to be used mostly by visitors to the new theme park and, on a limited basis, by Convention Center visitors.

The Carousel Inn is only the right side of the buildings that are circled (white roof), the left side is the Camelot(grey roof). It's a very narrow strip, and not sure what could be done with it.

Sorry, not to be sour grapes, DL gets a $1B epansion and the World gets NFL....I will probably never see DL, so when I read about things like this and see nothing for WDW, I get a little saddened.

But WDW is getting a whole new Avatar Land that is quite the expansion. I love both parks but really DL has a fraction of the attractions that are at WDW.

We consider WDW "home" for Disney, and we just spent 5 days at DL in May, it can happen, it's actually a cheaper stay because of several reasons. As to DL getting something and WDW not... well, we're getting Avatar-land, expansion of Pixar Place, finishing up the Hub expansion, Rivers of Light show (I believe an equivalent to WOC), and just had completed the expansion of Fantasyland in MK. I don't think we're being shorted at WDW.

California is expensive, what drove that home to me was looking at the gas prices alone, over a dollar more expensive than both home and Florida, and has been as much as almost two dollars more. Labor is another added cost since they have to pay Cali's higher min wage than Fla. The Billion isn't going to get DL as much as the same amount would in WDW.

You've got that right Gator Chris, it will be so nice to see all that money invested in something more tangible for guests.

At the great risk of starting an argument with others on this forum and possibly you (I hope not! :)), and at the risk of trying to define what an "attraction" is :scratchin, and whether it is or is not the same thing as a "ride", DLR's two parks have just about as many rides as all four WDW theme parks by my count (62 for WDW and 59 for DLR).

I believe Avatarland will be getting three new "rides" which will push them farther ahead of DLR in this area. But DLR will likely be getting some new rides related to Star Wars - and maybe a whole new Star Wars Land. I expect (hope?) to hear an announcement about this at the D23 Expo in August.

Further out there are persistent rumors about CarsLand or just RSR coming to DHS in the old Backlot Tour area. Which I think would be awesome for DHS even though I think it is cool DCA has this all to itself for the time being. I just hope they do not remove Lights Motor Action to help make way for RSR.

As time goes on I expect WDW to add new rides faster than DLR because of the greater availability of space there. But as of today it is not that different.

Nothing for WDW with its 27 hotels, 4 theme parks, 2 water parks, 4 golf courses, 2 miniature golf courses, stables, bike trails, boats, tennis courts, ESPN complex, Disney Springs, etc? Not to mention the $500 million New Fantasyland.

You should do yourself a favor and go to DL instead. The rides are much better, the weather is better, and the logistics of getting around are far better.

I'm a WDW vet, and we just went on our first trip to DL in May, and I think that everyone should experience both coasts. But, and this is a big one to me, WDW is home. I like that it can be much more immersive that DL can ever hope to be, because there is some much more room to separate you from the outside world. DL, we were still able to hear the traffic and emergency vehicles while in ride queues.

You are totally right of course. But one man's "immersive" is another man's "long waits for buses and boats". I am accustomed to both now. :)

Agreed. Our family just made our first trip to WDW last August. We loved the hotels, Poly & Wilderness Lodge, the variety of restaurants, and the Animal Kingdom.

I will add though that $1B isn't that much. Carsland took $1B (and it is gorgeous and possibly the best area of any Disney park) but if you subtract the cost of the unexciting but necessary projects like the parking structure and "other improvements" I'm not sure how much is left for many exciting attractions? One?-still better than Magicbands though!

There were other things besides Cars Land in that $1B figure, including BVS and all the infrastrcture.

Edit: I think Little Mermaid, World of Color, Buena Vista St, Cars Land and Carthay Circle Theatre would have all been considered part of DCA's expansion.
