DH has watched them lay off a dozen people at his work in the past 3 months, including one of his good friends. They all came into work thinking it was just a regular day and went home without a job.

DH has been out of work since June. He thought it might happen, as he could see that there was less and less work available, however the bosses kept saying that they wouldn't be laid off...well of course they were. There was no way the company could keep all those people when there was no work for them to do.

DS was hired by a company in early September. He quit another job to go there. After 4 weeks they laid him off because there wasn't enough work for everyone. Two weeks later they called him back, but laid off 5 other people. :confused3 I guess they felt he was a better worker (at least the mom in me would like to think that).

The credit crisis is playing havoc with many businesses. I just hope that the whole mess doesn't last too long, not only for us, but for everyone else who has been affected.

Correction I just talked to DH and he said the number is closer to 30 people. This is in a medium size car dealership.

In a way being laid off is a blessing. I don't mean it is good. It's not. When you know it could be coming life at work can be hell. It's like you are always looking over your shoulders.

It happened to me 15 years ago and when it did it was like a big weight was taken off my shoulders. Things get tight but then you realize life goes on.

My husband learned 2 weeks ago that he's being laid off at the end of the year. Originally back in May, they were closing his building, but his department was going to be relocated locally. But they decided the economy is just too bad right now to do that, so they're getting laid off too. They are getting tons of overtime right now, so it's not like there isn't any work. They'll just be moving it out of state when they close the local office.

He's in manufacturing.

My Dh's job search has been tough, since many companies are now instituting hiring freezes. The best advice I can give is to keep up the job search, even when there appear to be a few possiblities on the horizon. I can't tell you how many times DH has been the second choice candidate, after two or three interviews, face to face visits, etc. :headache: Job searchers have to try to keep up the momentum every day. Don't take time off to relax for a while, you need to start right away. Spruce up your resume, let your friends know that you're looking. Start that "networking" right away. My Dh approaches the job search as a job in itself, which he works at every day. It's hard to keep your chin up, but there's no choice. These days, there's no stigma to being laid off anymore. Everyone has been through it. It's a reality of our economic situation.

Best of luck to your neighbors! I hope they find something soon.

This is happening way too often. We've been through this in the past and are still recovering. I don't know what we would do if it happened again.

Best of luck to all of those who are searching for a job right now. It has taken me almost a year but I start my new job on Monday. I am so thankful. It didn't come a moment too soon for us. It is only a "two year term" position. but the money is good & the benefits are great. Hopefully things will pick up by the time my term expires.

This isn't the first time in our marriage that DH has been laid off. He works in an industry that is very much tied to the economy so we have learned to plan ahead, even when things are good (which is why I can still have my WDW trip ticker going). It has never failed that when he goes back to work, the position is much better than the one he was laid off from. So we're just waiting for the economy to straighten itself out some and then we'll be back on track.

This is good advice for all people who are laid off and their families too. Don't assume that because someone is laid off that they have nothing to do all day. The job search is extremely time consuming.

Congrats on your new job. I hope it's everything you want it to be.

I am very sad for all the people I keep coming across and can't help but wonder if this is a local oddity or if there are other sections of the country seeing the fall out from a few weeks ago too? I really hope this isn't a snowball gathering momentum....
I don't think it local. There are many parts of the country being affected, but it does vary a lot by region. Things are not really bad where I am.

The house a few doors down has been on the market for 6-8 months. But I just looked it up online, and I think they are way overpriced (by about $50,000). And that's assuming no decrease in prices in the past 2 years. So that does explain why it has not sold. I thought it was the weird orange door.:)

I hope it is not a snowball, but who can predict the future.
