........................

I guess I'll be in the minority and say that I don't really see the big problem.
My MIL lives on a lot that butts up to a wooded/creek area. She puts out corn for the deer, and they regularly visit. She LOVES it!
If you're in a rural area anyway, chances are you're subject to the same ticks that the deer would bring in. Also, deer are wild animals. I can't see them "forgetting" where to get food once you're gone. Trust me...when they no longer find food at your place, they'll look elsewhere.

I'd say if it's something you'd like to do, then do it. I think you're right. It would make lovely photos. :thumbsup2

I guess if you ignore the fact that in many places it's illegal to bait deer, and ignore the spread of disease that wildlife biologists attribute to deer baiting, you might be right.

Chronic wasting disease is but one of the diseases that is spread by feeding deer, and why it's illegal in Michigan.

I'm not sure if it makes any difference (and I've already decided that I'm not going to do this) but I am not in a "neighborhood" type setting.. I am in the mountains - an extremely rural area - and there is a very large deer population all around me.. (They will often cut through my property to get to the lake, just never seem to do it when I'm ready with the camera.. LOL)

Just wanted to clarify that I wouldn't be enticing deer to come into an area where they don't already exist in large numbers.. :)

Most of Michigan is the same as you describe, except for the mountains, with a huge deer population.

Check with your states DNR for baiting restrictions, if there are any. There probably are, particulary in hunting season.

for photo ops ask the locals where the deer trails are. They are pretty regular, at least the packs I have seen in illinois, and will be in the same spot about the same time everyday. Especially if it is "no hunting" land.

then just get there an hour before they come through. Bring a chair, try to be downwind of the trail.

And if not, how would I do it?

I would really, really like to attract some deer onto my property here at the lake before I head back to DD's in early or mid-November so that I can get some great photo ops..

They will be taking their travel trailer home this weekend - leaving my extra lot wide open..

Is there any reason I would not want deer on my property - or it would be advisable not to attract them to it?

If not, how could I get them onto the property? They would make for some beautiful photos with all of the various colored leaves on the ground all over that lot.. :)

:rotfl: I'm sorry to laugh, but I read this whole post as "I would like to attract beer to my property" and "Is there any reason I would not want beer on my property?":rotfl2:

I swear, I had to go back and look at it again. I couldn't think of any reason to NOT have beer on your property (I mean, its *your* property:rolleyes: ) but I couldn't figure out how you meant to attract it.:confused3

Alrighty then.. Set your glass/bottle down and step away from the computer..:lmao:

I started up their dirt driveway and this deer started stomping it's feet and making some kind of noise I had never, ever heard before.. (I didn't even know deer made noise!)

Was it the huffing, snorting, half-screeching noise? I've heard deer do that when they get startled or upset.

I've only had one "incident" with a deer, despite all of the deer on our property. This incident did not even occur on our property. It was on a main road, and it was rut season. The deer thought it would be a cool idea to run into my car while I was driving 55mph down the road. My car and the deer kind of collided with each other at the same time. It didn't look like it caused a lot of damage, but the insurance said it was totaled, and they took my car away. :(
