Maybe you're right. Maybe life was drastically different in the USA than in the rest of the world in 1913. I live in Canada and even my Grandmother had to have her husbands permission to open a bank account or get a credit card. And I'm not talking 1913... This was in the 50s. And my Grandfather would have been embarrassed and ashamed if his wife "had" to work. It would have meant he wasn't doing his job as a man and a husband.
Like they say "we've come a long way baby"
My Grandmother graduated high school around 1913, and got a part time job arranging flowers in the back of the florist shop. When he found out, my great-great-grandfather (who was raising her), hit the roof, and told her that "no woman in this family has ever worked, and no woman in this family will ever work". She quit the job the very next day, and it was the only day she worked for pay throughout her life. Her inability to earn a living played a significant role in her inability to leave her alcoholic husband.
My son is African American. Had I been born in 1913, he'd be born a year after Emmett Till. I think that's plenty of reason to choose 2113. However, the sexism of the era would be a good second reason.
