Oh, how I hate to jump into the Boards with this one, but I felt a renter's (although new to it) perspective is needed.
I think PamOKW summarized it pretty well. It takes an extreme leap of faith to send a large check across country to a stranger. If there happens to be an unscrupulous DVC'er out there, you have little or no recourse and a lot of bad memories from what was supposed to be your vacation. In addition, the deal is usually non-refundable, paid in cash, the dates pretty well set in stone, and you don't have the same services as a regular guest at the resort. Heck, as a renter, you don't even have access to MS. All of these things affect the market value.
I have several friends who go to Disney fairly often that know about renting and won't take the risk. And, I admit, it took several months of monitoring the boards before I had the nerve to consider renting!
If you have been following the boards for a while like I have, all of these terms and conditions are pretty well discussed. You have your eyes open, and come to an acceptable amount you are willing to pay that balances your appetite for risk versus the price per point. The substantial savings is what makes the risks and restrictions worth it. Once the savings are greatly decreased, I, for one, would be looking into other avenues (hey, they have some great specials at AKL right now).
I cannot speak for the motives of the person that bid $19.75 per point, but it appears they were caught up in the bidding frenzy or very uninformed. At $19.75, you are so close or even above the retail price that I think most people would say forget it. For example, if you wanted to go a week (7 days) in July to the OKW in a studio, the retail price per Deb's website (no DC,
AAA, AP discount) is $244/night plus 11% tax. Per DVC, it is considered the Magic season at 11 points and 27 points (109 weekly). This is $1896 Disney (including tax) versus $2153 on Ebay! With one of the above discounts, the Disney price would be even less. And, you get all the "comforts" of going with "risk-free" Disney. And if you do a little more comparison, you see that this is not the only time of the year that this happens.
I have to add too that anything I have seen on Ebay for a package is always Sunday thru Thursday. This is not the fault of the bidder (renter); it is what the Owner is offering. I have never bid on a Ebay package as I always need weekend days and look at the price as an average(apparently a rare breed from what I gather on this thread

. I am also more comfortable renting from the DVCer's on these boards.
I also think that from what I gather from these boards, most of the Owners take a great deal of pride in their ownership at DVC. I would expect that when I rent from a DVC member, as much as I want to get comfortable with the person I am renting from; I would also expect the Owner would want to be comfortable with me--that I will respect the rules and occupancy limits, treat the facility with great care, etc. (as I will)--as I am a representative of them. On Ebay, it goes to the highest bidder--you have lost any say in that matter.
Well, that is my two cents worth (perhaps more like a nickel's worth by the length of it). I would like to also thank those DVCers who do rent at reasonable prices. We are considering buying into DVC but need to experience it first. Renting allows us the opportunity to do this.
((Hope this is not a double post-with a few moderations--my computer and server has been acting wacky today!))
