18 yr old is suing parents for college education

I had one of those headstrong teens and I can say without a doubt that there were times that I lost my temper and didn't handle things the way a perfect parent would with him. Luckily, nobody hauled me into court or called Child Services.

And luckily, he didn't turn 18 before he graduated High School because I'm sure that would have made a very disruptive and stressful situation worse.

I am SO SO SO very glad we are past that time of his life.

That's exactly why she wore the uniform, and it's actually very common for lawyers to tell their clients what to wear to court.

I know that lawyers do this, it still felt increidbly phony to me.

Thank you for your insight. I also think 18 year olds are a work in progress. They make mistakes, they take bad advice, they..aren't mature.
This family will be damaged by all this for years, if not forever. Trust is gone.
So, so sad. The best thing that could happen is tons of sensitive family therapy. Neither the 18 year old or the parents should be firmly planted in a demand of my way or the highway.

It depends...in my family it took my brother a few years, but once he got his head out of his rearend and dumped the gf then wife, he finally saw that we all had his best interest at heart, my mom, me, my DH, my brother and his many friends he lost along the way, all welcomed him back. I think family therapy is a great idea for this family too

I love how her attorneys had her dress in her school uniform...give me a friggin break. As someone who wore 12 years of uniforms and my kids now wear them every day, there was no reason except theater for this and to portray her as a "poor" school girl.

Well, the hearing was held at 3:00 pm, which is right around the end of the school day. So maybe they wanted to reinforce that she went to school that day and wasn't skipping school anymore (one of her problem behaviors).

I did a quick google. Jaime is most certainly a girl. There are photos of them together at the hearing.

Probably true. But the judge also refused the request yesterday for immediate reimbursement of the legal fees he fronted Rachel, so I think it is likely he's going to end up with a nice bill for his actions. So there is that.

There is no way this will cost Jaime's father $13,000+. I can almost promise you that is the amount Rachel's attorney would have billed her parents, but not the amount she will expect from Jaime's father if they lose.

Probably regional differences again. Hispanics in Texas I would assume are mostly Mexican. Hispanics here in NJ are mostly Caribbean/Latin/South American. Popular Hispanic names here are Guillermo, Jose, Jesus, Eduardo etc. Never met a hispanic Jamie

Here in NJ Jaime (Jay-me) is a girl 9 times out of 10. With lawyers fees what they are here it could easily be $13k. He has staff resources he's using as well as himself. A nothing law suit costs $$$ here in the NYC area.

BUT

I'm reading through the Mom's deposition, and got to the part where they took the trip to Vegas and left the girls in the care of the now 18 year old and I'm like

You KNOW she's been acting up, you KNOW she's been partying like crazy, you KNOW she's been running around with the boyfriend.... and instead of actually having the grandfather (who would make them do chores and enforce rules) you leave them alone with neighbors to watch? And then are surprised when she gets in trouble at the Homecoming Dance?

Um..... yeah.....

My parents would have had us moved in with the grandparents, not the grandparents coming to us, and too bad if *we* didn't like it.
