A couple of weeks ago, my DD (12) was helping me pump gas into our YukonXL. I went to get my wallet from the front seat and a guy approached the back of the Yukon and said to my daughter, "$75 to fill that m***** f***** up?!?" He then turned to his friend pumping gas behind us and said, "It takes $75 to fill that piece of s*** up!"

Needless to say it really bothered my daughter - I felt bad for not approaching him and telling him how inappropriate he was!

That guy would have totally gotten a piece of my mind!!

Then again, if they had the nerve to say something like that to a 12 year old girl, they probably wouldn't have had any qualms about beating the crap out of her mother, either.

Well I think it's more then just "perception" it's my experience. I've got a totalled car, two broken ribs, two dislocated ribs, and more torn muscles then I can shake a stick at, all because some woman in an SUV didn't think it was worth the bother to look before she turned left into me.

Do I think all SUV drivers are like that? Of course not that's why I was careful to say *some* And yes you are absolutely right, some drivers in small cars or sports cars drive stupidly too. ]"

First of all, do you seriously think the woman said to herself, "Oh , it's not worth my bother to look, even if it means that a BIGGER car than mine could be coming at me.".? It was an accident, and I don't see what it has to do with the size of her vehicle, other than my reasoning that I will defensibly wrap as much metal around my family as I can. You can do what you want with yours. If you chose to drive a "death trap" that is your choice, knowing what is out there on the road. If your perception is that "some" SUV's are out to get you, then I would put myself into a larger vehicle. You never know if an accident is going to be your fault or someone elses..that's why they call them accidents..

But when someone in an SUV drives stupidly they'll probably walk away from the wreck and just make a comment about "burying me in my car"

And if YOU make a mistake, the SAME thing will happen..

Now, let me first state that I am not saying that everyone who has mentioned "wants vs. needs" has a negative attitude, but some people have come across like that. I will be the first to say that perhaps I am misunderstanding your posts.

However, I do find the whole "want versus need" debate to be petty and tedious in general, whether it is about SUVs or another topic. People who hold themselves above others because they fall on the "I don't need it so I don't buy it" side can't possibly make that same argument for every single thing in their lives. Do they own a house that has more than one bathroom? Well, can't others in the family just wait their turn? Do they own a TV? Surely one can survive without one. Do they take vacations, such as to WDW? That has got to be a want, not a need. So, unless one can argue that they own and do nothing that they don't absolutely need to survive, then I feel that they shouldn't be using this argument.

I agree. I know lots of SUV drivers and no one thinks they can just go where they want without looking. Of course there are people who are going to space out for a second, but it has nothing to do with the kind or size of car they're driving.

That's not true... I NEEDED that new Vera Bradley patchwork tote. More importantly, because I saved over $2700 this past year by switching from an Expedition to a CRV (20k miles @ $3.10 per gallon) I was able to buy it without financing it. I am just waiting for someone with a Mossimo bag to walk up to me and say, "dang, you paid $48 for that and all you have inside are a few dollars and a tissue holder??"

Oh absolutely. The world is filled with things that we don't need. There is not a single person on this message board that can claim everything they have is a necessity.

If I only had what I needed then I would own a 1 bedroom, 1 bath, kitchen with area for a table for two and a living room home. I would have just enough clothes that I would be wearing the last one when the washer was full. I would hang my clothes on the line. ETC. Life would not be too much fun to live.

My only concern with any vehicle is it's gas mileage. We import more gas than we could if we had more efficient vehicles. That would be better for the US in the long run. Trains are far more efficient than planes for moving people. I would love a better train system in the US and street cars in Cities.

Hey, if you are refering to me, please, let me apologize for coming across as negative. When I say "we" I really mean "we", as in me too! I have discovered recently that I have many, many things in my life that I tend to think I "need" that I truly do not and I am afraid many of us may be having to discover that soon.

And no, I wasn't really referring to anyone specifically, and IIRC your posts spoke more to the idea that often people talk themselves into thinking they "need" the latest and greatest. Which, frankly, I do believe happens to most of us at one time or another.

My post was meant to be more of a commentary on the general nature of wants-versus-needs arguments, which I have seen in many places, certainly not just on the Dis.

A funny/weird thing happened to me on the same vein. About two weeks ago I was in dd's school office, waiting in line to ask a question about something when another mother kept staring at me very pointedly. I had seen her before and she was never very friendly toward me, but I don't know her. She kept giving me a kind of dirty look, and I didn't understand why. She finally said in a huffy voice "You drive that black Hummer, don't you?" "I HATE those things, and don't understand HOW people could drive them!" She said it with such venom, I was completely taken aback. The funny thing is, we don't have a Hummer (nor would we be able to park one if we did! LOL) I told he "No, that's not mine." with a puzzled look. She said "Oh, I thought it was." No apology for being so rude or anything. She still isn't very friendly toward me... guess she either still doesn't believe me or is to embarrassed to admit it.

Quite frankly, I might have reacted differently if I weren't surrounded by all the school administrators, and other parents. dd is only in pre-k, and I didn't want to start an infamous scene to be re-told for years in the office.

An update: I finally saw the "black hummer woman" for the first time last week getting out of her car at the parent/teacher conferences. I am quite flattered the other woman thought it was me - While we do have very similar hair color and style and facial features, the black hummer woman was a good 10-15 lbs. lighter than me!

Aww...I'm sorry....My husband runs a service department for Goodyear, so I am quite aware of what cars are junk and what will last longer. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings.

You apology sucks, too. And my Escort lasted 10 years with only routine maintenance, so I guess your husband isn't always right.

For me I could car less about gas mileage. I drive my car only when I need too and I plan my errands around what may be the most efficient use of gas (and time). I could care less about what other people drive. Just be responsible with what you own. I have an Explorer (V6) and a Mustang (GT)and they are just the right size for what we want. If anyone made fun of my car choices I'd tell them to pound sand. It's none of my business what people drive and vice-versa.

Just an aside to those that don't know...the OP (on the budget board) has posted her and her DH may be declaring bankruptcy...for their $260,000 mortgage they can't pay and their $50,000 in credit card debt they have.
