...

Seriously, folks, drive whatever the heck you want. My DH always laughs at these arguments....mostly b/c he is a pilot and says it is hard to excited over a car when you drive multi-million dollar aircraft for a living. ;)

I guess that puts it all in perspective. He should be happy he doesn't have to buy the gas for it himself.

Um, I need a cell phone. I went with out one until about 4 years ago when I realized I needed one because public phones were becoming extinct.

Um, I didn't say you don't need a cell phone. I have one too and you are right, public phones are becoming extinct. What I said was we don't all need one that will do everything but wash the dishes and keep the kids!

My point was that we, as a society, tend to make things a "need" instead of a "want" in our minds to justify it. There are those that "need" an SUV for whatever reason, just as there are those that need that dish washing cell phone, but don't try to convince me everyone does because its not true. These things (phones and vehicles) have become status symbols. We rush out and buy the latest status symbol and then moan and groan about what we have to pay for the upkeep of said symbol.

Hmmmm....did the mommy wars just take on a new element? The SUV mommy versus minivan mommy wars?

I agree that both are now identified with mommies....I'm an SUV mommy because I always thought buying a minivan would be like giving up my identity of myself. I will admit to watching a few commercials advertising certain elements of minivans and thinking "oh THAT would be cool!".

I wonder if the working mommies are more SUV mommies and the minivan mommies are more at home mommies. The prius mommies must be crunchy mommies.

Seriously? Who cares what other people drive?

SAHM with an orange Beetle.:thumbsup2 I don't care what anyone else drives. I like my car because it's 'me'. Plus, when people ask if I'm going to have more kids, I can reply 'No, I drive a Beetle. No room.';)

If I ever have more than two kids, I so want the minivan that the seats turn around and there's a table in the middle. No idea how safe it is in a crash (and I say that as the one who always had to sit backwards in the way back of the station wagon!) As long, of course, as the second DVD player swivels around so the backward facing kids can still see it. :rotfl:

I'm a SAHM with an SUV. (Soon I'll be a SAHM in a sedan, the horror! I can barely reach the coffee drive thru window in it!)

How rude! How did you respond? I think I'd be so shocked I wouldn't be able to respond.

I probably would have shook my head and said (as if I was talking to myself) "My goodness...old people can be so rude" and then I would have gotten into my car.

Punch Buggy Orange!!

No punch backs!!!

Eh the guys comments were inappropriate, but I don't think OP's reply was any better.

It's nobody's business what car a person chooses to drive but:

I really hate how *some* SUV drivers drive without any concern for those in smaller cars. As if the larger car automatically gives you the right of way. I think the feeling of invincibility makes *some* SUV drivers more reckless then they would be in a smaller car.

Like it or not fitswimmer is 100% right. SUVs are part of the reason our gas prices are on the rise. SUV's will eventually go the way of the dodo bird. We simply do not have the oil supply to sustain that kind of gas guzzling. Of course at some point none of will be able to drive our cars - it's just that all the gas guzzling will speed up the process.

It's not automobiles that are responsible for the majority of gas consumption...it's industry and much of that is because the 'do gooders' are getting the Nuclear power plants shut down so power plants are going back to diesel. How about aircraft? One Jumbo Jet uses enough fuel on one flight for a neighbourhood of SUV's for a month!!!!!! SUV's being outlawed would be putting a band aid on a broken leg I am afraid...

I haven't read the whole thread, but Escalades practically breed jealousy. This is particularly true with the current Escalade, which is a bit 'blingier' than the previous generation. My brother-in-law has one, and he gets a lot of comments.
Really? They scream "ghetto" to me. Around here I only see black escalades (and very few at that) and I always wonder if it's Nelly inside. :rotfl:

No. I'm a SAHM who drives an SUV. I haven't noticed any correlation among the moms that know either.

Yep, along with minivans and pick-up trucks and some big sedans too. SUVs aren't the only part of the problem.

OK, I don't care what you say, but I DEFINITELY NEED one of these!!;)

My Neighbours have an Escalade, big white one. Used to belong to Faith Hill so has alllll kinds of goodies. My daughters always say "Pimp my Ride' when they see it lol.

I do not for one minute think jealousy comes into play when most people see one. These days--anyone can pretty much have whatever car they want with lease prices being pretty attainable.

And I feel this is total perception, because the way I see it...I OWN the spot that I am in...for the moment ..and the little cars zip in and out like they are in some kind of race, glancing off my bumper to get ahead because they can BARELY FIT into that little space I have made in front of me to keep a certain distance away from the cars ahead. I definitely see more aggression and wrecklessness with little sport car wannabes. I tell ya, if I was driving around in what I refer to as a "death trap" aka, tiny little car, I would steer clear of anything bigger than me-for my own safety.

And just to be fair, it also drives me nuts when I see a large SUV or Pickup driving like they have the manuverability of a two seater sportscar.

TOTALLY agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My DH always says "Well-at least they can bury them in it"

They think because they are small they can fit anywhere, but I would not be going up against all that tonnage that's for sure!

How about aircraft? One Jumbo Jet uses enough fuel on one flight for a neighbourhood of SUV's for a month!!!!!! SUV's being outlawed would be putting a band aid on a broken leg I am afraid...

My husband wastes more fuel in his plane in a couple months than I could use in my SUV over most of its lifetime.

Well I think it's more then just "perception" it's my experience. I've got a totalled car, two broken ribs, two dislocated ribs, and more torn muscles then I can shake a stick at, all because some woman in an SUV didn't think it was worth the bother to look before she turned left into me.

Do I think all SUV drivers are like that? Of course not that's why I was careful to say *some* And yes you are absolutely right, some drivers in small cars or sports cars drive stupidly too. But when someone in an SUV drives stupidly they'll probably walk away from the wreck and just make a comment about "burying me in my car"

:rotfl: I always wondered if you notice people doing that to each other when you drive a Beetle. Answer: YES. People smack each other when I drive by (in the US).:thumbsup2

Mine too. Not saying I agree with gas-guzzling cars, just that those jets suck gas.

I think a bad driver is a bad driver irregardless of it being an SUV or a Smart Car!

My comment when people chose to share their unwanted opinions is something to the effect of "If you worried more about your own business and not the business of other people you would be a much happier person and not feel the need to make such opinionated comments." Always leaves the person standing there with a dumb look on their face.

A couple of weeks ago, my DD (12) was helping me pump gas into our YukonXL. I went to get my wallet from the front seat and a guy approached the back of the Yukon and said to my daughter, "$75 to fill that m***** f***** up?!?" He then turned to his friend pumping gas behind us and said, "It takes $75 to fill that piece of s*** up!"

Needless to say it really bothered my daughter - I felt bad for not approaching him and telling him how inappropriate he was!
